Will this remove the copper layer, too? I have mirrored doors that the "mirror" has peeled off in sections and so I want to strip them clean and start with fresh glass.

its not silver nitrate on the back of the mirror... its just silver. silver nitrate is the salt used in the mirroring process along with a reducing agent to create silver ions that stick to glass creating a pure silver chemical plating.

I think it is just Nitric Acid as Nitric Acid + Silver will give you silver nitrate, what you see dripping from the dissolved mirror along with some water mixed into it: 3 Ag + 4 HNO3 --->> 3 AgNO3 + NO + 2 H2O
