I would like to give you a tip. You dont need any special tool for cam belt. Just release the tensioner wheel, then pull the straight belt to the Right until you se The hole on tensioner pin inside the spring. Put a 3" nail in hole and release. If you dont want to remove both manifold and intake, just unbolt the downpipe and some cables and hoses and lift everything up together. 😊

It's crazy how the intake side is a breeze to take apart, and the exhaust/turbo stuff is absolutely INFURIATING. I had a turbo overhaul and a blown HG replacement coming when my 940 got to 500k km and I spent two days fighting the bastard just to get the head out. Of course the most inaccessible bolts were the worst. I ended up removing the oil filter adapter arm to get to the bracket screws.

@redblockgarage2 жыл бұрын
Great video! I've done this job on a couple redblocks and yes the turbo cars are a bit more work but nothing too crazy. I highly recommend replacing any small maintenance items that are hard to access while you have it pulled apart. I'd do those heater hoses while you're in there as well as they are very cheap to replace. Don't reuse those head bolts as they are stretch bolts for one time use and will cause a head gasket failure in the near future if not replaced. Also there is a drain on the intercooler for getting out the oil that is in it from the oil blow by on the turbo. It's super easy to pull the intercooler to clean it out. I bet there's a sizable amount of oil in it. My 745t had probably 3/4 of a quart in its cooler. You look like you've got this under control though. Keep up the good work.
@Involvod2 жыл бұрын
Thanks man that is some great advice, there seems to be some mixed opinion on reusing the bolts, I just now ordered a set, it's not worth taking the chance is it.. I also checked the intercooler today after reading your comment and there wasn't too much oil in it which was a relief!

1:31 you can also make the rustbond break by cooling the nut swiftly with the wd40, heatcycles do wonders. just a thought. My "tried and true" tactic for exhaust manifold bolts is tapping on the tools end with my palm great for breaking lose even really tight stuff.. and seems to result in way less snapped studs. also those damn heatshields for sparkplug leads, no idea if they actually help anything but damn do they make breaking lose those nuts so much worse. Do inspect before putting it back together if your exhaust manifold is cracked.. usually cracked backside of the collector.

Thanks for the tips! I used to always hit nuts and bolts to shock them and help them free up easier and you're right it works a treat! I need to get back into the habit of doing it

I like the no music and just the voice-over with "nonsense". I would have removed the throttle cable before removing the intake manifold, to ensure it does not get stretched or damaged. While you can re-use the headbolts up to 5 times (per Volvo), a full set of new ones is still relatively inexpensive and I'd just install new (with the new headgasket).

I replaced my exhaust manifold one month ago, drove 6000Km and now I have white smoke, lots of pressure in the cooling tank and the cooling fluid is leaking from the radiator hoses. I guess it is time to go for the headgasket replacement, 284000Km. I have the benefit that the exhaust manifold nuts are new, so I will not have to use a torch. I usually lift my car on wooden cribs I built, so I can work under too. For instance, that last nut and stud underneath the exhaust manifold, it is much easier to unscrew from under. Unexpected question for you: what video cam equipment have you used to record your video? Gopro or similar?
@Involvod2 жыл бұрын
Oh sorry to hear that! Did you see my video on testing a failed head gasket? Those cheap little testers are great, to know for sure. I use a DJI Osmo action, a gopro rival
@shepshepherd2 жыл бұрын
I reckon that the head gasket has failed due to old age and the pressures of being fitted to a turbocharged engine, as I can't see any obvious damage. Apart from replacing the inlet manifold gasket in 2006, I've not done any major work to my 1990 740's B200F engine, despite owing the car for 19 years; I've not even removed the camshaft cover. I guess that the Volvo gods and Lord Volgor are smiling on the car :) I'm now supporting you with actual cash munny, by the way ^^

Perseverance is the name of the game with stubborn nuts, with a cup of tea in between . Even a skilled mechanic can spend hours on a stubborn bolt. We forget that motors where put together before they where installed. So unless there was a sympathetic designer who thought of future accessibility , we run into problems. Sometimes needing monkey hands or a second elbow, to access a nut or connection. Enjoy your struggles as a normal bloke doing the best he can.
