It is in fact all one take. It's a brilliant take too. The camera traverses Ren completely without revealing Chinchilla, and pooofff...like a magic trick she appears. Also, the reverb in that hall is simply perfect. Ren and Sam are brilliant at picking a location, and making the absolute most of it.
@simonstrick6713 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. I suspect that there is little bit of post-production magic here too. That ‘chair snap’ reverb I’m sure is slightly enhanced, as are their vocal performances (not anything as crass as auto tune though, it’s just that they’re both singing into throat mics which, as good as some throat mics can be, can’t capture and replicate the fullness of the vocals that you hear). The big thing for me with this reaction video, as with many others is: why is @koalityreactions using in-ear earphones? They will get such a better experience with full closed-back headphones. I see this a lot and think their experience would be much better will full headphones.

How at eas Ren is with Sam going around him with the cam, pure chemestry...❤
@tplouffe92263 ай бұрын
@simonstrick6713 Well there is a little studio magic if you want to call it that. Ren said he meticulously goes through all of his live performance stuff and just adjust frequencies/eq's every little part to make the levels more even throughout and emphasize certain things

@Shiroar Жыл бұрын
This song always reminds that one of the (many) things that makes Ren so great is his ability to know exactly when to be complex, keep it simple, or even use silence to get his message across. He isn’t flexing his guitar skills in this, just playing exactly what is needed with that beautiful guitar tone. And my favourite line in this is so simple, totally devoid of all the clever metaphors that he is so good at using, but it hits soooo hard: “I’m scared of being okay cause all things change”. I think anyone who has been through any struggles can relate to that feeling of not trusting that anything good will last. You can’t just enjoy it because you’re busy worrying about how long it will last and the feeling that will come when it’s gone. And then good days just make the darkness feel so much worse because you remember the light that’s gone… Ren is so special. He keeps being so relatable that it reminds us that we’re not alone. Anyway I highly recommend checking out Crutch feat. Bibi. It is an older song from before he finally got diagnosed correctly and was written after a breakdown following multiple emergency trips to the hospital. It is heart wrenching but so so beautiful. One of my absolute favourite Ren songs.

Ren and the artists he works with in these videos deserve all the awards of course but whoever sets up the audio should also get all the awards. Live one take recordings using every inch of the scenes as accompaniment that make it so real!

I honestly love watching your reactions for Ren. You give it the thought and attention the art deserves. I can’t wait to see more. If you want to see REN’s range definitely do some of his band The Big Push. Depending on your music preferences here’s some suggestions: War Pigs Paint it Black I shot the sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop Precious As you truly believe in mental health being important then I have a triple song request. Freckled angels, suicide and then For Joe. All about his friend that took his own life when he was young. He tried to get to the bridge and save him but was too late. As you love Ren and chinchilla they have done some great street performances. Sexual healing and drake/Beyoncé definitely worth a watch. Stay well Peace

One of the things I really like about this song is that the natural echo / reverb of the place they’re performing in really adds to it. As a collaboration this is just sublime, they sing so well together! Great reaction, not difficult with songs like this but your analysis is on another level! Really enjoyed it all 🌹 Edit: you really should check out some of Chinchillas songs as well!

Lovely Reaction! :) Ren has an outstanding ability draw the listener in with exceptional story telling. It's not just words coming out of his mouth, you can feel exactly what he's singing about his lived experience, just by listening to the soul of his voice. Both Ren and Chinchilla did an absolutely outstanding live performance on this one. To me this version is way way better than the recorded version they have. The best part about Live music is that you capture the soul of the artist in the moment, something that is usually lost in a studio setting with all retakes, nitpicking and the aim to perfect the sound and reduce noise. Something that with a true artist, more often than not, is actually a worse idea than having all the imperfections of a performance recorded. What truly makes us connect with anything is our human emotions and our proclivity for sympathy, awe and appreciation. PS: I was actually shocked when i stumbled upon your channel! You are so incredibly beautiful that i couldn't stop staring at your face! :O That's what I'd call a jackpot on the genepool lottery :). Big hugs from Sweden!!

I've thought a lot about the name "chalk outlines" and haven't come up with a great reason that the central metaphor is with something that signifies death. My best theories are 1. that medications deaden your emotions (reducing the meaning to what amounts to a pun), and 2. that continual use of medications to suppress your identity ("push it back down", "bury myself") represents a de defacto death of self. I have to disclaim that, like Ren and Chinchilla, I'm not disparaging medication as a mental health tool. However, when used as an avoidance mechanism, they can end up perpetually deferring self-actualization (and the healing that might reduce those dependencies).
@jeffstumpf9129 Жыл бұрын
I’d say you grasped the meaning of the song quite well. Yes, Ren and Chinchilla are both top notch artists. Thank you for insightful reaction.
@iamlpinthe312 Жыл бұрын
After Hi Ren it took me MONTHS to process it… by watching it literally before I got out of bed ( often multiple times) and again at the end of my day. It felt as if I “bookended” it it would hold me together…not for long, just for a while. Well one night I got cocky and watched this AND How To Be Me in the same night, on repeat…that turned into day as I sobbed and rewatched them again. Ren and Chinchilla are musical sibling and it’s apparent in their blood harmony, the trust that they have in each other, the eye contact ( that seems to tether them to each) and shows the emotional trust.

They are filming in the backstage areas of a theatre - the documents in the start that is focused on is mostly theatre balance sheets and depreciation (reduction of asset values) records from the 1970s and 1980s, part of the theatre finance archives. The boxes at the corner are invoices and similar, but flitted over so fast that they are otherwise unreadable as the focus is pulled off them. Depreciation or devaluing people with mental health or illness over time is one way that people 'die' in their own or other's view. The chalk outlines are multi-layered - the deaths by suic!de, or misadventure from overdoses (of prescribed or recreational self-medication) - the walking death of the supression of emotion and/or self which comes with the altering of brain chemistry with many of these drugs and from excessive drinking, recreational drugs etc, as well as the pleasure seeking by other destructive habits. The white uniforms are similar to those used in mental hospitals and psych wards - and are themselves symbolic of the medicalisation of the emotional state and it's erasure for 'helping' and for the convenience of staff - it is also in appearance a walking chalk outline and is associated with required taking of medications and suppression of disruptive thoughts and actions (see 'curated Ren' near the start of Hi Ren, where he has been medically 'separated' from his more creative, though also chaotic elements). Then there are the little pills themselves 'outlines of chalk' which allow the miniscule amounts of active ingredients to be conveniently handled, dosed and taken, and which lie behind every other loss of self and the temporary burial behind a new habit, and a great big smile. That little zip of serotonin.

5:59 "Ren's voice..." You mentioned that Ren made you emotional (before this I watched your reaction to "Hi Ren"). My opinion is that (from Ren's interviews) he has suffered for (6 - 10) YEARS immense pain and tortuous misdiagnosis which continuously made his condition worse! So, in my opinion, his voice has embedded into it that sad journey. Lots of people also love the voice of Oliver Anthony (that rabbit hole I spent three months traversing before my study of Ren). OA, in comparison has suffered (though, admittedly, not as much as Ren -- still good). Anyway, I consider them both as prophets (though Ren's talent and genius is incredible). Both, have the hugest of hearts. 🙂❤

A new subscriber to your channel after your thoughtful Nightwish reviews. Thought I'd check out some artists on your channel that I'd never heard before. Chinchilla and Ren are both new to me. Terrific review. I really like how you try to pick apart the lyrics to glean some meaning from them. I don't see enough of that in these "Reaction" videos. So many just say they're "so excited" to listen, and then say a few nice words afterwards about the singers (rarely about the band), and that's it. Done. Where's the analysis? Were they even listening to the music? Anyway, keep up the good work!
