@OptimalGluteHypertrophyАй бұрын
That’s great but Dr Mike is basically a bro scientist with half the stuff he says. Dumbbell pullovers are pretty shit for the Lats. Stretch mediated hypertrophy is very limited especially with a muscle like the Lats which has low activation at those joint angles. Also the whole thing about the “eccentric causing more growth than the concentric” might be one of the greatest misunderstandings of science ever. Yes, eccentric overload training will cause more growth than a regular set of concentric reps to failure, mainly because of the force velocity curve meaning more cross bridges will form on an eccentric contraction than concentric. But that’s only true for eccentric OVERLOAD, meaning you can’t do a concentric rep and the weight involuntarily is lowered. On a regular set, the eccentric is building pretty much no muscle because obviously there is very low mechanical tension if you are lowering a weight that you are able to lift 🤦♂️

I've been using the RP hypertrophy app inconsistently for about a year and I have noticeable muscle growth (still working on losing weight), to the point that family has asked what I'm doing different and people I work with have started commenting on my physical strength (they ask me to move the heavy stuff). Been doing pull-ups for like 2 years now consistently. Can contest that they give the most pump on the back when done properly. A lot of people don’t go all the way down stretched and then they use their forearms to do most of the pulling and round their back at the top. Consider keeping elbows forward, back arched slightly, and squeeze the elbows to the lats when pulling up and then do as Dr. Mike says and engage your lats on the eccentric and go slow.

What about single hand kneeling lat pulldowns. Where you cause a bigger stretch by leaning to the side as you go up and leaning in as you contract. I never see you mention it in any of your lat series. To me, it was the best lat exercise in my toolbelt that hits all the metrics you list of having a deep stretch & being harder at the stretch. The stretch was even deeper because of the oblique lean to the side than any two handed exercises for the lats. It gave me the best mind muscle connection which I lacked for so long with assisted pull ups, prayers and lat pulldowns. It helped pave my way to doing pull ups as my main. For this reason I still use it even with pull ups being my main as I cant get that same stretch on the lats with any other exercise.

@DoomCookie2 ай бұрын
You’re right about friction always counteracting the motion. And that’s exactly why there is a difference between the concentric and eccentric motion, the motions have different directions. You just have to look how the forces apply. On the concentric you pull the weight stack up against gravity and the friction of the machine. You have to overcome both forces to get the stack moving in the direction you’re pulling. On the eccentric the gravitational force is pulling the weight down against you resisting the weight going down and the friction of the machine. So the force you put in while resisting the weight going down has to be lower than when you pull the weight up. Otherwise the weight stack would not be moving down but up.

Lat prayers hit my triceps long head as much if not more than my lats. I've tried various grips. It never changes.
@chrisoman872 ай бұрын
The primary function of the long head is to pull the elbow "down" to your side so this makes sense, it is probably weaker than your lats due to the size imbalance, I would be surprised this would not be the case for a pulldown as well, as the mechanism is the same. I would say the difference would be your grip-width and amount of pronation/supination compared to the pulldowns. Try varying the grip to find a way that the leverage of your lats is worse so it becomes the primary driver.
@soots-stayingoutofthespotl54952 ай бұрын
Are you keeping your arms absolutely straight on the swimmer rows/ straight-arm pulldowns? Even a slight bend starts to turn it into a Tricep pushdown. Perhaps you'll find it easier to emphasise your back by using a bar instead of a rope (either a short one or the Lat pulldown bar, the latter making the exercise easier), and/or leaning over more and pulling down so that your arms stop when they're vertical, and not pulling all the way to your thighs. It might be worth experimenting a bit more?

My man (and everyone involved), thanks for all the motivation and the push to grind. Add little teasers to the parts where you show a movement as (as seen in App) ;) All the best, hope to meet you in person one day

All the best for Jared in the grind as well. This sport needs a lot of motivation to keep in track. Best wishes from Finland

This vid is so frkn awesome. I find pull downs such a waste of time coz I rarely feel anything in my back and my forearms give out before I feel anything in my back (because slowing down on the eccentric strains my forearms a lot regardless of grip). This is precisely the reason I've been doing rows and single lat pulls since I can feel my back better. I'll be trying the alternatives from the vid and see if these do wonders.

Perfect video! Really needed this bc lat pulldowns are really doing nothing for my lats for some reason

Great video, Mike! Just planned my new program for the next couple of months, and wanted to do pulldowns because they are a “bread and butter” exercise but they have never really been my favorite and you made me realize why - it’s because they suck the ever living shit out of you at that bottom part. The energy consumption for that last bottom part is simply not worth it. I’ve been doing assisted pull-ups before and not only do they not fatigue you like pulldowns do, I get a way better contraction in the lats.

See this gels with my personal experience. No matter what I do, I can't seem to get much of a pump or really even sore from rows or pulldowns, but pullovers and lat prayers just absolutely slaughter my lats.

Damn Dr. Mike…this was OUTSTANDING!!!! Please do one for DB Rows.

Ive learned alot on this channel. Do these lat prayers on a incline bench on cables and its amazing. Gets a better stretch amd better mind to muscle connection. 100 percent recommend these instead of the pullovers and lat prayers

Interesting about friction helping you with the eccentric on machines Never thought about it like that

Hey Dr. Mike how about a video on bodybuilding Poses and how to properly do them

I'm a swimmer and I do like a single arm lat prayer with a little bit of upper body rotation through the movement, feels like it's good for building power on freestyle.

Years ago I randomly got an idea to cross my grip over for the V-bar lat pulldown. Feel it all the way into the serratus. No data behind it that I know of, but it worked well.

This is the information I needed to start lat prayers, thanks Dr.

I recently added lat prayers to my routine... I get more stimulus from an 80 pound prayer than I do full stacking the pulldowns. So glad to see my choice to add them justified by Dr. Mike!

Thank you for this!!! Still quite new to bodybuilding, but I've not had great experiences on the lat pull down machines, seems to always hit my biceps instead of my back I've tried different positions on the grip, different versions of the machine, no dice Did one set on an isolated row machine and felt immediate muscle stimulus

Lat prayers is an exercise I kind of discovered on my own (at the time thought I was "making it up") and makes a lot of sense and always feels good. It's nice and validating to see people recommending this - confirms I was on the right track even though I didn't really know what I was doing. Similarly, what about a movement where you do each arm independently, and pull down to the SIDE instead of front? basically like the reverse of a dumbbell lateral raise, where you take a pulley and pull down to the side toward your waist with a straight arm - like a jumping jack type movement with your arms but with weight? I've felt like this is even more of a pure lat (and maybe some oblique) isolation, and is a nice way to hit that muscle from the side at a different angle to mix things up and something that requires a little less weight to get good activation. Haven't gone looking for it but can't say I've ever seen anyone doing this. Is this a thing?
