Great video and information, thanks for the hard work. I’m just installing mine bought in February this year and contacted Renogy about the omission of the neutral earth bond switch and they have replied saying it is installed! I’m finishing the install tomorrow so I’ll test as per your instructions pre retro fitting the relay and send them the evidence. I’ve asked them to pay for the additional relay and associated wiring costs but they have failed to even acknowledge this request. I’ll post later my tests and further correspondence from Renogy.

Hey there, i can confirm that all PCL Renogy Inverter chargers, even the new REGO inverter charger coming soon to the UK, does not have a N-E bond relay switch. Maybe they misunderstood. However, i'm happy for you to prove me wrong with your results. Feedback from my customers has been that Renogy are offering an external relay setup at an additional cost. However, the setup and instructions are poor. If it turns out there is no N-E bond relay, i have wiring diagrams for an external RCD contactor installation here - vandercampadventures.com/downloads/renogy-inverter-charger-rcd-contactor-wiring-diagram-uk/ Keep us posted and let me know if you require additional support. Thanks for the incredible detail! Have bought and followed the wiring diagram, really clear thank you 👍 inverter working fine, on switching to shore power it stabilises for 8secs ~ then trips the DB1 rcd and shore power side rcd. Anyone else have this issue it’s a 2024 2000w version. Renogy helpline did clarify there has not been a N-E contactor fitted internally.

Good video, only additional test id carry out would be to simulate a failure of the contactor to make sure the incomer RCD trips, which it should as it'd introduce a N-E fault. Also, the RCD only needs to be tested every 6 months.

Best information to resolve the issue of floating neutral inverters that I’ve seen, and I’ve watched many. I’m currently looking for a 120V, 4-pole connector relay that will do the same as Jolly’s 230V connector. I’ll follow Jolly’s video to get the wiring right, hopefully the first time. Thank you Jolly!

Hey there, thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. Your kind words mean a lot to me and make all the effort I put into creating the video worth it. I apologize for not being able to source a contactor for 120v. You should be able to find a similar model that meets your needs. Ensure the contactor has at least two normally open (NO) contacts and one normally closed (NC) contact. Typically, they come with four poles, so you should look for two NO and two NC contacts. Also, ensure that the amp rating is sufficient to carry the current for the inverter. If you have any further questions or need additional help, please don't hesitate to contact me. Best regards, Jolly

Fantastic instructional videos - many thanks. I've just binge watched them. I've had the 3k version for almost 2 years now in my caravan. My initial wiring hasn't been perfect mostly because I'm swapping out a 30A hook-up cable inside of the 'van, depending upon whether I wanted to use the inverter or shore power. If I understand correctly the RCDs in the van won't operate as I don't have the N-E bond? Clearly not a great situation. I also had an issue with the pass-through. The smaller Renogy inverters pass-through whilst switched off. I'm guessing that this one needs to be switched on to pass-through as it also operates as a UPS. HOWEVER, the cooling fan came on for a minute or so every hour, even when there was no AC load - not great at night. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has experienced this. Oh, whilst I'm on I don't suppose you've ever run a Tassimo coffee machine using this inverter - it doesn't half make a funny noise... Although, it must have made a few hundred coffees with no issues, so far. All the best and thanks again. :-)
@vandercampadventures
@vandercampadventures Күн бұрын
Hey there, many thanks for your support. I think you're my first 'binge watcher'. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment and ask questions. Correct, the RCD on the AC output won't function (as an RCD) because the inverter is centre-tapped (no N-E bond). You can carry out a simple test to ensure your inverter has/hasn't got an internal N-E bond relay. See video section - 33:55. The inverter charger must be on for the automatic transfer relay (pass-through) to function. Unfortunately, the cooling fan operates approximately every hour (I've not timed it exactly). I've not tested the fan's operation when there are no loads. I agree that this is a nuisance. What makes a funny noise, the Tassimo coffee machine? Does it make a noise when on hook-up power (pass-through)? Regards, Jolly

Thank you for a comprensive explanation why neutral to earth is needed for correct RCD operation with an inverter. A more expensive inverter charger from Victron, a Victron Multiplus, has the bonding relay/contactor built in, thus a much easier install. All the Renogy inverters and Inverter chargers on sale in the UK, for permanent instalation, 😢😊 are center tap design and where installed in a application with distributed multiple outputs sockets and metal cased appliances, are inherently unsafe unless a RCD is fitted with an additional bonding relay/contactor as shown in the video. 😢

Good video, Interestingly I get 60V measurement when running on battery not 100+V as I would have expected, using the standard 2000W Australian model with 240V output, I have been looking into installing an RCD before I install the unit and was surprised when plugging GPO tester in and hitting RCD test the inverter does nothing, now I know why after watching this, I would have preferred if Renogy just installed an RCD in the unit like REDARC and some others do and just charge another $40 for it, it would save a lot of headache.
@vandercampadventures
@vandercampadventures Ай бұрын
Hey Pork-Chop, You may be reading 60 volts because there is a load on the AC output. Slight variations in tolerance and capacitance can cause the voltages to change. Try testing it with all loads switched off. Some new Renogy products in the US now have built-in N-E bonds, which is promising. However, even though an inverter states it has an RCD, protective device, N-E bond, etc., I would still install an external setup. This way, you know the safety devices and can ensure they work and will protect you. A small price to pay to be safe, I think! Regards, Jolly

Hey Jolly, thanks very much for the informative video, I had a mare going through all the sockets, checking through all the wiring, trying to figure out where the neutral and live had been switched 😂 Out of interest, could the sockets just be run off one MCB on a radial circuit rather than having an individual MCB for each one?
@vandercampadventures
@vandercampadventures Ай бұрын
Hey, thanks so much for your comment and kind words. Yes, you can install more than one socket on a radial circuit. The important things to consider are: - The radial circuit cable must be able to carry the current of the total load of the sockets. - The MCB must be suitably sized to protect the cable. Regards, Jolly

Excellent video and have subscribed! very informative although I am now in panic mode! Has this issue been addressed yet? V3 p14 of the manual states it has the auto switching. Just got mine 2 weeks ago and if it is still not fitted then I am not sure what I will do for my son and his young families house boat installation. Trying to save every penny we can and had heard good things about Renogy (other than slow customer service) which is why we have invested in a DCDC charger, MPPT and the inverter together with 2 x 200Ah lifeP04. Not exactly cheap but cheaper than Victron and hopefully up to the task. Worst case I guess I could look at the relay option although then we start getting in to galvanic isolators etc and my head explodes! Keep up the great work and again, awesome video.

Hey, thank you so much for the comment and kind words 👍. The N-E automatic switching isn't installed on the Renogy inverter chargers. I have spoken to Renogy but they can't confirm if the automatic switch will be incorporated in the future. This information was removed from the manual so isn't in the newer versions. Out of interest, what manual version did you get with the inverter charger? V3.0 online doesn't include the automatic N-E bond switching. Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video, it’s something I have been looking for for a long while. I do have a question though - when there are essentially two ‘lives’, I am struggling to understand how the NE bond is different to a live to Earth fault. Best review and guidance of the install i have found. Thankyou... It made it very easy to research correct RCDs and circuit breakers. One thing ive seen on the circuit breakers is the rated short circuit breaking capacity, Some are 6 KA some 4 some 10. What would you recommend?
@vandercampadventures
@vandercampadventures 3 ай бұрын
Hey Adam, thank you so much for the comment and kind words. It's reassuring to know it's helped you out. Ideally a short circuit current test should be performed at the mains hook-up to determine the size you need. However, this is impractical. Therefore, I would recommend 6KA. 6KA is typically used for domestic installations and 10KA is typically used for industrial installations. The KA value is how much short circuit current the CB can withstand. Hope that helps 👍. I now offer 1-1 assistance with installing and setting up the Inverter Charger so give me a shout if you need anything 👍. Regards, Jolly

Hey up.. this is absolutely brilliant. Well presented and great understanding..content like this is very valuable even for us who will engage a sparky but it's nice to know why and how it works. I'm currently deciding spend extra on victron or enerdrive inverter (in OZ) which have built on RCD and neutrla earth bond, or go RENOGY inverter charger 3000w at a quarter of the price. ..My question. In Oz some say use and RCD AND RVD combined. But is your additional switch the same as just putting in a manual change over switch for shore power to inverter power do the same thing? To add more into the mix would I need a 3 position change over switch if I wanted to run between shore power/inverter power/petrol generator?? This is my dilemma picking the correct inverter and correct switching method for 240v. This would make another great video.
@vandercampadventures
@vandercampadventures Ай бұрын
Hey Gavin, thank you so much for the comment and positive support, it means a lot to know were helping. We swear by and highly recommend the Renogy inverter charger because of it's high quality at an affordable price compared to the competitors. Also, the lack of a N-E bond and RCD can put people off but i have designed a way to install an RCD with an addition of a N-E bond - I have a detailed wiring diagram for this. RCD & RVD - An RCD must be installed and an RVD is not required by regulations. However, an RVD can be installed with an RCD for additional protection. Additional Switch - The contactor and N-E bond setup in the video is not the same as a bypass switch. The contactor is designed to introduce a N-E bond when the AC output power is supplied from the inverter (not on hook-up). This N-E bond is required to ensure an RCD will function on the AC output and protect you. Changeover Switch - A changeover switch can be installed to bypass the inverter. However, in my opinion, a changeover switch is not necessary because the inverter has a built in bypass switch that will automatically bypass the inverter when it senses an AC input. There is a lot more to cover in this topic so would agree that this would make a great KZbin video. Ide be more than happy to go into more detail and work with you to find the best solution for you. I can also design detailed wiring diagrams to suit your setup. However, i do charge for consultations, support and wiring diagrams. Thanks jolly. Watching the video are we concluding if ALL your 230-240v sockets are double pole, that's Means there is no need for a contactor switch ? Secondly, if there is no need for a change over switch from battery power to inverter power, how would this work if you plug in a generator into the external 15amp into the caravan? No need for may change over switch in that regard? I will run the 3000w RENOGY inverter as it's $400AU and already have a lithium charger,.so the weight of the inverter charger and the fact it's no earth bond anyway seems better option to run separate 240v charger imo. 3. Do you run battery to chassis ground or buss bar or shunt to chassis ground?

@@vandercampadventures thanks Jolly! Just ordered it. 👍🏻 I’m not sure if you would know but I’m struggling to find a video on this.. I decided to get an Automatic Transfer Switch instead of a rotary selector switch. Do you know if this would be installed in between the RCD and the contactor, or after the contactor? I know the inverter has a bypass mode but we didn’t want to be limited by the inverter when on hook up. So decided to get a ATS to auto switch over when hook up is on. Thanks again mate! Fantastic informative and thoughtful videos which should be receiving revenue from Renogy for doing their job for them. I'm going to be fitting the 3000W inverter soon and this has helped greatly, thanks. I'm planning on running a camping induction hob from it, so I need to be attentive to every detail as I'll be drawing a fair old wattage from it. Can I just ask, when you are using 240v sockets in the van, does everything go through your inverter circuit regardless of whether you are on shore power or not? Meaning, does your inverter always have to be switched on to enable the bypass to operate? Or do you have independent shore power sockets that would allow you to disable the inverter? Cheers

Hey John, thanks for raising your concern. I presume your watching the video to gain knowledge and help with installing the product and how to get an RCD to function? As an expert on the I've provided a clear and concise wiring diagram to ensure your system is safe and meets current UK wiring regulations and standards. Something the product manual doesn't provide. The wiring diagram and product design have taken a few years of design and testing. This is to ensure the setup meets current regulations and will ensure anyone with a little knowledge can install it and be safe. Also, 20 years of electrical experience, time to make the KZbin video and designing the wiring diagram. The price also includes 1:1 e-mail support from myself if you need any help or guidance. Based on this, we feel the £15 price is very reasonable. However, if you still have concerns please e-mail me.

Hey Lucas, that's a good question! Thanks for the kind words. Earthing and bonding in a campervan can be tricky because the right answer depends on your specific setup. The simple answer is yes. There could be issues if the electrical system is not installed correctly. A campervan's AC and DC bonding and earthing create a continuous bonded system, which can potentially energize the entire system in the event of a fault. Therefore, an RCD MUST be installed. The RCD will isolate the system in the event of a fault to earth. When inverters and 230v AC electrics are installed in a campervan, an RCD MUST be installed on the AC input (hook-up) and AC output of the inverter. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you need any help with earthing and bonding your electrical system. I can offer 1:1 support and wiring diagrams to suit your system. Kind regards, Jolly

Hi Jolly, a few question for this, you showed the switch for the hook-up, you had to manually switch this on to energize the contactor to debond the Earth-Neutral, are you saying you have to manually turn breaker for the hookup on each time you plug the van into hook-up power and then turn this off when you leave hookup power ?, or do you leave everything on and it all works automatically as you plug or unplug the hookup ?, and for an inverter that only has output sockets could you just use a 2 pole contactor that simply bonds and debonds the Neutral to earth behind the GPO without the need of a 4 pole that switches the neutral and active, this would have to be controlled via an external switch manually so you disable it when plugging into a powered site, finally is this all irrelevant if using double insulated appliances, as these have no link back to earth, so if something went horribly wrong you are not actually protected by the RCD I assume ?, thanks
@vandercampadventures
@vandercampadventures Ай бұрын
Hey Pork-Chop, I manually switched the breaker on and off to demonstrate how the contractor works. You don't need to operate the RCD and breakers manually every time you're on hookup; leave them on. The inverter charger has a slight delay when switching over to AC bypass and charge, so it's safe to use the hook-up plug as the on/off "switch." Yes, double-pole appliances can be used without an RCD and N-E bond. They are double-insulated, so there is no earth connection. However, they must plug directly into the inverter, not via an extension lead. If you're referring to the Renogy inverter and not the inverter charger, the installation of the N-E bond will depend on whether you're using the AC input on the inverter. I have a wiring diagram for the Renogy inverter that details the N-E bond, RCD, and contactor installation. Here's the link - vandercampadventures.com/renogy-inverter-charger-wiring-diagram-rcd-contactor/ Centre-tapped inverters are safe to use as long as the electrical installation is done correctly. Regards, Jolly

Hi mate, I’ve purchased the exact same model in here in Australia and just wanted to ask if you guys use RVD’s (Residual voltage device) on caravans? @vandercampadventures
@vandercampadventures 3 ай бұрын
Hey buddy, thanks for getting in touch. We don't really use RVD's in the UK, they're currently not a requirement in the regulations. However, some installations do benefit from them. The regulations state that an RCD must be used. Therefore, an RVD is to be used alongside an RCD as 'additional protection' and not to be used without an RCD. In some instances an RVD will pick up a fault before the RCD. I hope this helps 👍. Let me know if you have any more questions. Regards, Jolly

At 43:29 wouldn't the appliance/load be earthed back through the inverter then the inverter would trip using it's own internal protection? Given that the system is 'floating' and the risk of shock is the same as in the home (i.e. you would still receive a shock if you touched live and neutral) couldn't you dispense with the RCD on that side? Also, I'm wondering if the earth on the inverter casing is connected to the centre tapped earth in the inverter. By bonding the earth to neutral it seems like you reintroduce the risk of shock for the purpose of adding an RCD?
@vandercampadventures
@vandercampadventures 15 күн бұрын
Hey Matthew, thank you for raising your concerns and questions. "At 43:29 wouldn't the appliance/load be earthed back through the inverter then the inverter would trip using it's own internal protection?" Yes. When the inverter charger is connected to an AC input (hook-up), the transfer relay will be in bypass. Therefore, the AC input is connected to the AC output. "The inverter is equipped with a 20A self-resetting magnetic fuse for internal protection." I haven't been able to test or obtain test results from Renogy for this protection, so I can't guarantee the level of protection it will provide. Therefore, I recommend using an external fused setup for added protection that you know and trust. "Given that the system is 'floating' and the risk of shock is the same as in the home (i.e. you would still receive a shock if you touched live and neutral) couldn't you dispense with the RCD on that side?" The residual-current device (RCD) on the AC output side is there to provide earth leakage protection for the inverter AC output power when not connected to the hookup. The RCD's purpose is to protect you (the human) against fatal electric shocks. "Also, I'm wondering if the earth on the inverter casing is connected to the centre-tapped earth in the inverter." I don't know where the inverter casing is directly connected, nor has Renogy provided me with this information. However, I have tested the earthed casing to confirm the earthed connection. "By bonding the earth to neutral it seems like you reintroduce the risk of shock for the purpose of adding an RCD?" When you introduce a Neutral-Earth bond, you are introducing a potential to the earthed system, which is why the N-E bond must be accompanied by an RCD. The RCD will sense the leaked current and isolate the power. A floating AC system is safe to use when it's installed correctly. For a campervan, the safest option is to have RCD protection. More importantly, an RCD is required by the BS7671 wiring regulations. In conclusion, a correctly earthed campervan system with an RCD equals safety for you. The subject of RCDs and earthing in campervans is extensive on its own. I hope I have provided you with sufficient information. Regards, Jolly

Can I ask a question. towards the end when you tripped the hookup and the inverter kicked in, does that mean if you have a real fault while on hookup the inverter will still kick in and then trip as the faulty appliance is still plugged in?
@vandercampadventures
@vandercampadventures Ай бұрын
I tripped the breaker to demonstrate what would happen if the hook-up power was turned off. If the AC input power (hook-up) is lost, the inverter will kick in immediately. A faulty appliance will trip the protective device on both hook-up and inverter power. This installation ensures it meets current wiring regulations and is safe. Regards, Jolly

Hey Harry Thank you for sharing your concern. As someone who has worked with electrical components for 20 years, I completely understand the devastation that heat can cause. However, it is important to note that the manual guidelines for the location and ventilation of the inverter charger are just recommendations. While designing our layout, I was worried about ensuring adequate ventilation for the inverter charger. However, to follow the recommended ventilation guidelines, we would have required a space of 1000mm x 700mm, which we do not have. Therefore, I contacted Renogy support to express my concerns and discuss our proposed airflow and vents plan. Renogy confirmed that their stated ventilation guidelines are recommendations only. The most important thing is to ensure the vents aren't blocked and the air can move and circulate through the inverter charger, which should not be in a sealed box. Our unit is not in a sealed box; it's in a space allowing sufficient airflow. We have installed 2x 75mm drop-out vents in the floor, one on either side of the inverter charger. Additionally, we have created 3x 50mm vent holes in the seat base to ensure the air can circulate underneath the bench seat and electric compartment. Given my concerns, I have closely monitored the unit's temperature when the charger is charging at full power (65A), and the inverter is powering a high load. I can assure you that the unit does get warm, but not enough to cause any concern, even during a 2-week heatwave of 40 deg C. Regards, Jolly
