Renovation Collection for the Evercade contains game ruining glitches that you need to know about

The Renovation Collection was released for the Evercade at the end of March, but so far we know of at least two games on the cartridge that have game ruining glitches you need to know about. Both Exile and Beast Wrestler have glitches related to text boxes and menus that ruin gameplay. Essentially the menus are uncontrollable as the Evercade’ s emulator seems to interpret rapid fire button presses coming from the player. In Exile this is especially game breaking because it makes in game menus, for equipping weapons or using items, almost impossible to navigate or utilize properly.
Everything else seems to be working properly, but there’s no official public recognition of this problem from Blaze….as of yet. However, it seems that the game is no longer available on Amazon. Did it simply sell out? Or did they recognize the problem and pull the cartridge? Hopefully a firmware update can resolve this problem, or a lot of people are going to be very disappointed with this highly anticipated collection of games.

As of April 8th, after the latest firmware update, the glitches covered in this video are no longer present on the Renovation Collection. We tested both games to confirm this ourselves. The menus and text boxes now work properly in Exile, and the monster naming cursor no longer runs all over the screen. Once again, for all of the technical issues that have plagued Blaze since the Evercade debuted a couple of years ago, they really are quite diligent about problem solving. I just wish they were as diligent about play testing! Anyway, this latest update also comes with the inclusion of their new FREE monthly game for the VS. The first game is Tapeworm, by the same developer of Flea, and it’s an example of just one game that will be on the Indie Heroes 2 collection in the future. It’s really good! Thanks for validating that it's good now. I also heard it was fixed, but after my last experience, I just can't find it in me to be bothered to power on and try. If there are glitches within the first 10 seconds of gameplay, who knows what other surprises await those investing more time into it.

I think that’s a fair criticism, and I have a similar apprehension. I guess I’ll go as far as I can? I suppose this is the danger in attempting to put out so many games at once. You want to assume they all work, but they really do need to be carefully played through to make sure that each one actually works. The Sega Astro City Mini had a similar problem with quartet. There’s a level that can’t be beaten because they used a rom that came with anti piracy features that removed platforms needed to beat the game. What an oversight!

Thanks for the heads up, have they addressed it on the handheld as well? Seems to work normally on the vs but seems the same issue persists on the handheld.

It's strange that these errors weren't spotted. In the days when carts were the norm, developers literally had one chance to get it right. Are modern developers lazy and just think ''Ah, we'll fix it in the future.''?

I think that’s exactly what’s going on! I’ve just heard back from Blaze themselves, and they’ve informed me that the issue is going to be resolved with yet another firmware update in the near future. What vexes me is that this is precisely one of the reasons I’m supposed to get on board with the Evercade! It’s supposed to be stable, physical media….but if your cartridge doesn’t even work without online updates, do you really have physical media? I can imagine a scenario where Blaze stops online support for the Evercade, as all companies must eventually move on, and someone acquires an Evercade and a game cartridge only to find that the version he has is faulty and can’t be updated or resolved. It’s not all that different from all these Nintendo Switch games that are “physical copies”…..most won’t even work until you’ve downloaded massive patches or updates as soon as you’ve inserted them into your switch. So what’s the use in having physical media? Thanks for watching dude! 😎

@@creativecatproductions I know, it's not satisfying. If I went out and bought Super Ghouls 'N' Ghosts for SNES, I would have something (in it's entirety). The same thing is true if I spent a lot of money buying an arcade PCB. It's mentally satisfying and is one of the reasons I mostly spend my time with retro games. I have Steam and PC games but there's something missing. I think the developers spending days without sleep getting something ready for release is a bad thing but some pressure is a good thing. Where there is no pressure, there's no point going the extra mile. Leave that for another day.

There's no need for them to pull the cartridge. It's probably that there was a very limited number available due to shipping limitations worldwide at the moment. They can do Cart updates via the VS so if its just a tweak required for those games I'm sure they can easily fix it. It is strange they didn't catch such an obvious problem when testing these games. Unless it got introduced after testing and before getting the carts made.

Right! I just heard back from Blaze and they’re issuing a firmware update in the future to resolve the issue. The lack of availability on Amazon in North America is plainly a function of scarcity. Oddly enough I think that scalpers have turned their attention to this particular cartridge because the game library is theoretically quite valuable, if you were to own the Sega Genesis originals. People on Facebook are talking about how they’re buying more than one copy as an investment. I hope that’s not a trend but it was only a matter of time before numbered collectible cartridges were targeted by scalpers.

It’s soooo bad, but the concept really is cool. I think maybe the main reason everyone hates beast wrestler so much is that it seems to actually be a very complex game with a stiff learning curve. I think it’s frustrating because we just don’t know how to play it. The Evercade has “color manuals” but they’re useless. They don’t actually tell you how to play the games. I think if I had a list of possible moves I could get past level 2! I guess I could go online and find them? But with the glitches I don’t even want to bother now. Thanks for watching dude! 😎

That's too bad. I thought the Evercade VS would be the perfect way to go as a retro gamer and was really looking forward to the console. But when they actually released the details of the console, the combination of price and lack of quality cartridges had me look to other options for the few games I was interested in and I'm glad I did. I've also heard of issues with the button configuration as almost all the games have b and a (or a and b) as the main action buttons instead of y and b (or again, I think they did x and a). I'll still hope Sega makes another mini console and have that as my next purchase.

Yeah the button configurations are an issue. I address that in our upcoming review. They do allow you to remap the controller, but you have to redo it for different games. Man, that’s disappointing especially to see they didn’t properly QA/play test the game unless they thought they’d just patch it later but even that’s a slap in the face for longevity. I haven’t kept up with the Evercade releases after the long drought and the repeated VS delays.

I believe a lot of these guys that give good reviews to these evergade products and so on are getting them for free so they're going to say good things no matter what because they want to keep getting free stuff. That's a theory I have no proof of this. But it's something to consider. From where it stands. I'm not sold on these things. And I appreciate you doing the leg work with your family to let me know what doesn't doesn't work. Also, what do you think of Don thomas? He's the guy who was a PR rep for Atari during their last days. Then was hired by Sega for a while. I had a little fanzine reviewing Atari Jaguar stuff he personally called me and thanked me for reviewing those games that seems like a really cool guy. I would bet he's not there anymore.

Yeah, the quality is definitely lacking. We did a couple of follow up videos on these devices and ultimately Im not sure I can recommend them. The console version was fine, but the new hand held had a lot of problems initially. Too many. Ive actually never heard of Don Thomas. That’s awesome that you have to communicate with him though! The most “industry” contact I’ve had was that a former manager from Retro Studios (Brian Walker) reached out to me after I created a video about his days at Retro in Austin back in the early to mid 2000s. He was really cool about it!

This is unfortunate, but not unexpected since Codemasters launched with a broken rom (super skid marks), when I did my first impressions I only did it on the games I was interested in so I never tested Beast Wrestler and or Exile because the games didn’t appeal to me Thank you for making me aware of this

@@creativecatproductions with the Codemasters skid marks glitch Blaze got retailers to send out free replacements, the Rom on the one I order 3 months after release had all games working on it However with this one it would just be easier to throw up a patch on the VS

Wow, I wasn’t aware of that. Thanks for the background. It sounds like a lot of these cartridges have had similar issues. Ive heard there are issues with the Gremlin collection too. They need to do a better job with quality control and testing before launching these games. I know they are a very small company, but if that means slowing down their release schedule to make sure these things don’t happen so frequently, then I think it would be better for them in the long run. They have a good start at this, they’re kind of a miracle, but if they’re not careful they’ll hurt their reputation.

This is Microsoft Game room for Xbox 360 PC levels of bad. They put Arcade and Atari 2600 Track ball games on it that was 100% unplayable because they did not emulate the trackball pad so even hiting one block in breakout was impossible. They never Fixed it and they even sold the 2600 tech demo Venicen Blinds that all you do is open and close a window that was never made to be sold as a game for $3 like every title on it costs.

The whole GR project was a mess it was planed to have 1000 games over 5 years it barely got 150 and this was for Atari 2600 Games including activision ones,Atari arcade games, Intelivision and Konami Arcade titles. The games on it had alot of poor sound emulation even though some of the Atari and Konami games on it had XBLA download Stand alone ports before that on 360 had no issues. The game had a 3d Menu system to make custom arcades that the Xbox Avatars would walk around in. But alot of time they just T Posed and puting stuff in the arcade later updates that they never fixed froze the console sometimes. MS never promoted it after launch and left all updates it got weekly to the games facebook page.

Here's something weird... I wasn't a fan of the Evercade because of the color choice of their console and box art. That red, black, and off-white color combo is no bueno (to me).

Yeah I think they wanted an homage to the Nintendo famicom. The VS is surprisingly attractive and sturdy in person, but red is not my color of choice either. I guess I generally want electronics hooked up to my tv to be black so they blend in better. No one has ever made a console that looks as good as the original mega drive! Thanks for watching dude! 😎

I think there was a special edition VS that was black and looked really cool but it might have only been a UK option and definitely cost more. I think it’s called the Founder Edition and cost $150.

Yeah it’s crazy. Scalpers have taken a lot of the fun out of retro game collecting. Even with the Evercade. I’ve seen the new Renovation Collection on eBay for $60 already. Last I checked it was no longer available on Amazon. Perhaps it will be restocked but I’m betting scalpers will be back for more.

I have been asking them for years for autofire. Old games can be painful to play without autofire. They do not care so I sold it last year.

I’m a little disappointed in it so far. This was the deal maker for me, and exile is kind of something I wanted included in working condition. I don’t care about beast wrestler though, but it really should work correctly. The other game collections I’ve tested so far all seem to work, but their almost depressingly mediocre. I love Tanzer though. That’s a great game

@@creativecatproductions Tanzer is pretty awesome. I have a Genesis cartridge and this is one game where I would have liked to have the save states of a modern console. Overall it is a bummer how few standout games are available. I think Xeno Crisis is the best game but it's on a cartridge of just two games. So with that I also thought the Renovations would be the best cartridge.

Blaze's quality testing is abysmal and almost indefensible at this point. Cart after cart after cart with simple obvious stuff that somehow went over their head. They need to stop crying about being a small company and seek investment if this is the best they can do. I'm sick of being their beta tester on every release.

Well said! To their credit they have been pretty successful at rectifying these problems after the fact….they recently told me that they plan on fixing this bug with a firmware update.
