Sega’s Power Surge: same game, new name, kind of lame

Last December, during the game awards, SEGA released a trailer for a new campaign they called the Power Surge in which they plan to remake or produce contemporary entries for five dormant classic SEGA franchise, including games for: Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Crazy Taxi!
At first, this seemed like really big news because it’s been a long time since we’ve seen SEGA deal with these classic IPs and this is exactly the sort of thing SEGA fans have wanted from SEGA for over 20 years. We’ve always wanted SEGA to innovate, yes, but it would have also been good to see the characters and games, that made the brand great in the first place, get some attention or updates.
However, upon closer examination of what SEGA is proposing here, I realize that things aren’t really what they seem and, really, SEGA isn’t actually doing anything all that different from what they’ve already been doing over the last 5 years or so. More to the point, people need to realize most of these games, all except one in fact, are probably not even going to be developed by SEGA, and given SEGA’s recent history, we have very good reason to doubt whether or not any of this will mean what we’re all hoping it means…..that somehow SEGA is “back” and that they’re poised to be as awesome as they once were before Sammy bought the brand back in 2003-2004.
Astute fans have already figured out that Lizard Cube and probably Dotemu will be doing Shinobi, which is very good news, but a game developer called Komi is likely handling the new Streets of Rage Revenge. That’s not the worst news ever, but it’s not exactly promising and its very unlikely that Komi is going to meet the incredible expectations surrounding the Streets of Rage series.
Anyway, SEGA’s done this before. Panzer Dragoon and House of the Dead both got mediocre remakes over the last few years, while Lizard Cube/DotEmu put out great updates to Wonderboy III and Streets of Rage.
The difference, now, is just that SEGA has cleverly marketed this as NEW.
But I’m no so sure.
Thanks for watching!

If anyone hadn't heard, Sega just hired the former VP of Sony (when they launched the PS1), Shinji Utsumi, he also went to Disney and was largely responsible for the Square Enix partnership when kingdom hearts came out he's now the president and COO of Sega of America and Europe

Good video CCP. Yeah, when I first saw this trailer and the initial reactions I was pumped but then reality started to settle in. I remembered how Sega mostly lets me down these days and I should lower my expectations. I believe Yuzo and Ancient are working on a Genesis shooter called Earthian. The little I've seen looks pretty good and I'll hope he is also involved in any of these other projects. I'm also most hopeful that the Shinobi game will at least be a keeper and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that one if not both of the Streets of Rage and Golden Axe games offer us something new and fun. For other titles, it's probably far too late but I've always been disappointed Sega never did anything else with Master of Darkness. That feels like a title with a real lot of potential and I also always hoped Zillion would get another chance as more of a Metroid style of game. As a completely different and off the wall idea, we see Atari putting out new cartridges for their old consoles and it seems like Sega could have done that a long time ago with all the Indie titles that come out along with the re releases from Retro Bit. But they've had opportunities in this area for a while so I can't expect they'd pick that up now.
@creativecatproductions

Indeed! Not only has SEGA missed the boat on some of those other retro ideas, like the recent Atari things, but it looks like they are basically done with their retro marketing altogether. It’s been well over a year since I’ve seen or heard anything from Yosuke Okunari, the SEGA executive in charge of their retro market (like the minis and all that), and SEGA Ages was shut down years ago now. I think they didn’t like the sales figures for the Genesis Mini 2, which was discounted almost right away and is probably still on sale…..in Japan….despite being produced in “very limited quantities”. The price was too much, it was too niche, and everyone who wanted a mini Genesis for its own sake already had one. I love the Mini 2, but I’m - like - not the typical customer 😆 I think they’re done with catering to the retro market and I think my hopes for something like a Master System Mini are basically never going to be realized. I do like the look of some of these new games, but it’s disappointing that really precious little here is actually being made by SEGA. I guess technically none of its, in a manner of speaking, but at least Jet Set Radio is getting SEGAs best talent by the looks of things. That game might turn out to be really interesting. I’ve always wanted to roller blade around Tokyo with spray paint while evading the police 😝 That Earthian game looks cool! Thanks for watching and always supporting us dude! 😎

Yeah, Earthion looks very promising! A lot of other home brews as well, as there's a lot of 'em coming this and the next year. You might want to check these upcoming games as well: BioEvil Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Chords ColocoDX Crypt of Dracula Daemon Claw Gears of Rage Ghouls 'N Ghosts Arcade Heavy Recoil Irena Genesis Metal Fury Kirito Life on Earth Lufthoheit Manifold Megacraft Mega Final Fight Mega R-Type Phantom Gear Planet B Real Bout Fatal Fury Special Space Hunter Sunset Riders Arcade The Secret of the 4 Winds Wacky Racers ZPF About the mini consoles, Sega's first was all about 1-upping Nintendo, the second more like mini Turbo. Something a bit more fleshed out would've been better though, like having at least all Sega's main series fully on there, meaning all three Streets of Rage games , the three Shinobi games, the three Golden Axe games, all four Phantasy Star games (the first Master System game was released on the Mega Drive in Japan), most of the Sonic games etc. Plus of course the great third-party titles that were already on there. An FPGA system with cartridge support would have been even better, but much more expensive.

@@DancesRainyStreets I'm very curious to see the SOTN game when finished but I'm such a fan of the original game that I'm pretty sure I'll feel let down in some ways. I've been waiting years for both Phantom Gear and ZPF as they both really catch my eye. Some of the others I'm not as impressed with. I really don't get what Sega was trying with the Mini 2. I agree with you the Mini 1 was the response to the NES and SNES classics but the Mini 2 was their chance to do something unique. Initially I was super pumped for the Sega CD inclusions but in the end it feels unsatisfying particularly when they were charging $120+ as you had to pay shipping. Initially I was hoping for something more similar to the Evercade, maybe some built in titles and either an online store or Sega making more games available for you to add by purchasing official SD cards or something like that and now we see the Atari setup and that would have been interesting too. I can't imagine the cartridge equipment is that expensive. I play my carts on a Hyperkin MegaRetron HD that at one point sold about $50 brand new so I'd like to think Sega could have made one that would have cost under $100. Oh well, it's hindsight now.

@@creativecatproductions Yeah, it really feels like they're done with retro stuff. It's also a shame because I can see their argument that it doesn't work but I'd suggest actually releasing the Mini 2 in the US might have helped its sales opposed to forcing everyone to pay Amazon shipping (which it's still available, so much for their fake hype to get it before it's gone) and not to forget lost opportunities in making these new Genesis games official releases. I've also given up on the Master System Mini as well. I still had a tiny bit of hope but it seems like me, you and maybe Segalord X are pretty much the only people actively asking for one. I never had a Dreamcast so I'll be very interested to see Jet Set Radio when it's finished and as we already said I'm fairly confident the Shinobi game should also be good.

Hey dude man, How are ya? Great video. All the games have some excellent history, but I kind of of tuned out on the 3-d polygonal reminiscent stuff. Never cared for the camera mechanics and character movement of the 3d games. But when you got to the Shinobi section, my eyes lit up. Something about those 2-d platformers/beat 'em ups that I really dig (background tapestry, hand drawn style, etc). It's a beautiful painting-in-motion. Doing well in your neck of the woods? This comes down to 3 areas the games must achieve: Marketing, Content and Execution. These revivals are already going to have a hard time appealing to the audience of today, especially when GTA6 comes out. Jet Set Radio if released next to that game, it’s lights out against the casual audience. But right now, Sega is looking to appeal to the western localization and their own customer service in regard to ‘harassment’. Basically we can’t complain about their games, lol. It’s likely possible this will be applied to their future games. They want their Super Game to be as big of the likes of GTA and Fortnite. But they’re risking shooting their own consumer base in the foot with this. Your thoughts?
@creativecatproductions
@creativecatproductions 6 ай бұрын
I find the idea you introduced me to, the idea that SEGA is really attempting to market the values of their various IPs, in order to appeal to potential future buyers of their various IPs, very compelling. I doubt the sales from these games compares that great to the revenue they make from Pachinko and their other investments. This would explain why they seem to care so little about the actual quality of these games as opposed to whether or not their names and identity still generate recognition and buzz. But then, they also just bought the Angry Birds stuff, which might indicate they aren’t being as clever as all that. 🤔 Jet Set Radio, if its a well made game, and if its genuinely open world, could be a big hit because I think that franchise has long since had a lot of untapped potential and personality. The only reason the original wasn’t even a bigger deal was because it was a Saturn game. I guess the X-box game probably didn’t sell that well because they dropped it hard after that…..plus Sammy dissolved Smilebit…..but that game was a case of too little, too soon, and the game needed more in the way of polish and gameplay improvements. The Super Game still baffles me and I sort of think it’s just hot air generated toward investors. The Sammy people seem to LOVE the idea of capital investment. Like so much. And they are very good at constantly updating reports and newsletters oriented at current and future stock holders. It’s been great for our channel because they always publish all these great reports for us to talk about in videos…..but it’s always hype and sales pitches and the final goal is always the same: get people to buy more shares in Sega-Sammy. The “super game” is almost certainly going to be a huge let down because how could it not be? But that’s beside the point. I think it’s just a pitch for more shares today.

@@creativecatproductions And when you compare that idea to Nintendo’s output, it doesn’t come close. Nintendo has always been first and foremost a gaming company, even though they’re investing themselves into entertainment. Sega says they went to surpass Mario(because they ‘respect’ the IP), but with the recent decisions that go against the bases invested into their IPs…that isn’t going to be very possible. Say that the next Sonic game is a masterpiece in every sense of the word, it’ll still fall behind what other IP can output because of the niche Sonic is. More people are invested in the characters and style of Sonic than the gameplay. Adding onto that, it’s clear that SegaSammy wants to turn Sonic into ‘Mario’ in several ways such as making him a brand focused image, super friendly and approachable. The problem is, that mentality goes against the nature that Sonic was in the first place-a rival to Mario. Remove the competitive nature and what you’re left with is an IP that still suffers from lack of identity. If Sonic movie 3 does well, so what? It’s for an audience who doesn’t play games, not for the hyper fans. But Mario can do both because Nintendo set him up like that. At this rate, Sonic isn’t going to pass Mario again in this lifetime. As for Sega’s other IPs, I don’t know what their fate is if SegaSammy continues to hold the outside branch with an iron grip. We might see that effect on Sonic in 2025 if they’re already pushing out American side of things. What do you think?
@creativecatproductions
@creativecatproductions 5 ай бұрын
Totally! I think Sega needs to spend less time focusing on their presentation and marketability and get to making great final products again, but that company is a nebulous bureaucratic mess. The people that work on the series don’t have room to have their own vision. They can’t give it their own creative voice. Everything they do feels like a low quality of copy of Nintendo. Frontiers was Breath of the Wild and everyone made comparisons to Mario Wonder with the new game. It’s always a cheap knock off. I think the reason Sonic Mania and Streets of Rage IV were so good is that they were free of Sammy, and more importantly, they were made people who actually care about this stuff.
@demetriusnp49
@demetriusnp49 5 ай бұрын
@@creativecatproductions That there is the biggest problem. Outside of Atlus and Yakuza(to an extent), SegaSammy doesn’t really let their developers breathe their own ideas outside of what their wants for. It’s harmed Sonic the most, Ian Flynn and some American support are the only things holding up that side. But there are talks of them wanting to step into more media with their IPs such as movies. However, that faces the same problems with the revivals, as in new generation fans haven’t heard about them. They should’ve done a better job managing their IP value after the fall of their consoles, especially post 2006 to current.

@@creativecatproductions At this point, I‘be grown tired of SegaSammy as a company. We all know where this is heading and if the supposed crash happens sooner than later, they’ll be selling off their IP. @creativecatproductions
@creativecatproductions 6 ай бұрын
I think you’re right that a new SOR and Golden Axe would have been better as 2D games. The thing that I never liked about 3D beat em ups and platformers is that they are much more sluggish than their 2D counterparts. Mario 64 was amazing, but I never liked it as much as the NES games because 3D means lots of walking around, and it takes too long to do anything interesting. 3D lends itself well to exploration and adventure…..like Zelda, but not so much to arcade style action games. 3D beat em ups were done on the PSX as well and they were the same….sluggish. Beat em ups need to keep up the pace, all the time, and wresting with camera angles and lengthy walks in every direction detracted from that. That’s largely why everyone hated Golden Axe riders…..it was sluggish, repetitive, and boring. But a 3D adventure game emphasizing exploration in the Golden Axe universe? Oh, that would be so awesome. I don’t think that’s what we’re getting here though. A new shining force game, a new phantasy star game, and a new Skies or Arcadia, or even a remake or remaster? Yeah, the art style for Golden Axe is pretty off base. That’s exactly what I felt about Streets of Rage 4 though and I ended up ultimately liking that game. The best indie developers that ever worked for them are hands down the guys who did Sonic Mania (who no longer seem to be working with them) and LizardCube/DotEmu. Should have been a dad beating on an old CRT trying to play his classic Mega Genesis games while his kid is playing SOR4 or Monkey Ball(or insert new Sega title here) then a big gee wiz flashy thing happens and they are united playing the new games together. Keep up the awesome Sega sleuthing CCP!

Thank you very much for the support! 🙏 We really appreciate it. 😎 Indeed, the idea of a young cool urban couple playing Shinobi is pretty off the mark. At one time, my wife and I were a young cool urban couple, and even then she’d only ever play guitar hero…..lots and lots of guitar hero. If that couple in the video had been playing guitar hero or Cooking Mama then I would maybe believe it……maybe. My wife doesn’t even watch this channel 😂 My kids, however, know all about these SEGA brands and it would have been really cool to get an inter generational angle going. The fact that Shinobi is awesome is a like bridge or something. Thanks for watching and thanks for the super thanks

How can you expect the Switch to keep up with a Series X or PS5? The difference between the 9th generation hardware and the Switch is monumental in scope. Hell, the Switch is weaker than an Xbox One...I predict Sega's new games will run poorly on a Switch. As far as Sega letting us down...have you tried playing the Yakuza games? They are all absolutely incredible.

That’s exactly my point! I don’t think SEGA, or anyone else, ought to develop across “multiple platforms” when the specs are so grossly divergent. I’d rather SEGA stuck to making propriety Swtich games that take advantage of that consoles strengths while avoiding its weaknesses. I think the new Sonic games are a perfect example. They run spectacularly well on the PS5 (because they’d better 😝) but they’re often a stuttering mess on the Switch…..to the point where it sucks. Somehow Nintendo can get Mario Wonder to play to utter perfection, but SEGA can’t get Sonic Superstars to function the way it ought to? The Switch should have been their number one priority with that game! That’s their target audience for a game like that, but by making it multi platform, and developing toward new gen hardware, they blew it. The Yakuza games have consistently been SEGAs greatest living franchise. Now that the series creator has left SEGA, however, I’m a little worried. At the same time, if that team is the team working on the new Jet Set Radio (and it seems to be) then it could turn out to be amazing. Thanks for watching dude! 😎

_Streets of Rage 4_ is pretty bad: it's difficult to know what would be fair to compare it to... as it is neither a néo-rétro game, nor really current gen... :-/

I give it a solid B+. I don’t think its as good as the original games, but its a good attempt and has a surprising amount of content for what it is. People love all the combos and power moves. I liked it, overall, but I really didn’t like the aesthetic choices and there were some major gameplay issues…..like why doesn’t it give you the ability to parry or side step enemies? Also, why was everyone so fat? Why did you have to fight so many women? And the new characters were, as the youth say, totally whack dawg. And the music was also mediocre compared to the first two games….except for everything composed by Yuzo Koshiro. You’re right though. It’s an odd game that defies normal categorization. It’s what I think a Streets of Rage game on the Saturn might have been like, only that would have looked way more like a streets of rage game.
