I have to do mine myself too. A cookie sheet and yard stick works fine for me. perhaps a mixer. I am rebuilding the house myself too. Just a few family members and a couple professional electric and water people to make sure those are correct, but with family will do most myself. It is a big art project.

Good job, I think from experience that plastering is or has been for me the hardest skill to get good at as it takes many years of regular work to become good at it. That's why maybe its not a diy job as most people doing up their house don't have the time to spend learning how its done. Its absolutely a practice makes perfect kind of job ! Nice video.

Ive been watching professionals most of the time and it gets intimidating knowing Ill probably never achieve a finish as good as theirs. I've got a chimney breast with that horrible 1980s stippled "decorative" finish and want to plaster it to a flat finish for painting. I went on "The Original Plasterers Forum" thinking I would get some helpful advice, all I was told was that it is too much of a job for a Noobie, and to pay a professional to do it. You have really encouraged me to have a go myself - thank you.

That's brilliant - good luck. The plasterers have to say that as they don't want to do themselves out of a job. That said, I'm sure half them wouldn't even take on a job as small as a chimney breast anyway. I'm sure you'll do great.

Mxrrrky a sponge float is a very expensive refina tool , if you don’t know what it’s for or ever used one you don’t know what you are talking about and in my eyes it’s you who isn’t a plasterer because you should have that knowledge for certain situations in the trade

At the start I thought it would come out awful, but you had the speedskim and the sponge float so it worked out well tbh, a little gyprock here and there and you would be done. Its worth pointing out that when practicing plastering dont do a full wall to pop your cherry. Do some gap filling, some joint filling, some prep work, maybe some bonding etc etc. When you are ready, you will know.

How do you smooth out the texture imparted by the sponge float?

I'd say fair point that "the biggest mistake begginers make is trying to get it too flat"....But watching this video makes it so clear how important being "periodic" or "repetitive" is. Same size dollop on the trowel, starting in the same place on the wall(i.e bottom left, swooping up the wall to atleast halfway), then moving over to the next swoop, and so on

You can tell when watching your video you're a beginner by the fact you walk up to the wall and start in the middle and do a tiny swoop, then randomly putting more on the wall with no real "method" to the madness

Just a few tips make it more creamier and start top left go across and work down and finish one area before the next. Itll make your life easier. :)

Good on you for having a go Georgina and I have to say it looks a lot better than my first ever attempt at plastering. My recommendation though if you have a lot of plastering to do would be to do like I did and invest in a 4 day plastering course. Yes it costs but you would more than get your investment back just by doing two rooms.

I do a lot of my own plastering if its a small job, I do a first coat then a second coat of plaster while its still wet then a dry trowel, wet trowel, and another dry trowel. I am interested on what version of speedskim you are using as I think there is a metal blade and plastic blade version and also how wide it is i.e 1200mm? also what is the sponge float model. I always pva......Well done for having a go at it.....

Thanks Glen, it was the plastic version and yes its 1200mm and the Refina sponge float - seems to be a popular brand. I'm hoping to have another go somewhere else in the house (if I can find someweher forgiving) so will try and show the products in a bit more detail next time.

Speed skim is good for first few towels . Saves time and energy . Final trowel is a good old steel trowel

I've used the ready-mixed stuff from Screwfix but if I moved into a place that had a load of plastering to do I think I'd give proper plaster a go. I like the finish of lining paper anyway, if it comes to it 😀

Not seen this video before, that was quite impressive, I expect the old boys network of real spreads will snort in disgust. I personally put a first coat, let it settle and then a second coat, I'm no pro spread either but a pro showed me how because he was too busy to come and do my small wall indoors. It had to be sanded a little and filled here and there but I did it myself and I was chuffed to bits with it. I used a light against the wall also to find dips and bumps. Anyway, well done you, how did the wall look after painting?

You did OK. I'm also DIY so I can only offer some tips from my own expereince! 1. Try a slightly wetter mix for the base coat. It spreads easier and gives you a bit more drying time. 2. Its physical work and lots of repetitive movements. That is the killer really for first timers, you got to take a few days to build up your muscles. :) That is fine though - you can easily justify having steak for tea two days running! :) 3. Watch a few more videos of the pros and observe their movements and what direction they are moving things specifically. 4. Invest in good quality tools. Don't just use whatever trowel you can get hold of. Get the right tools (and right size tools) for the job! 5. Accept that failure is part and parcel of becoming proficient at anything and try to enjoy the experience. "The only failure is failure to learn from your mistakes.." etc. :)

@@GeorginaBisbyDIY I think I will have my son throw it on the walls and I will smooth it out. I also got some good gel for muscles that numbs the nerves. I use for arthritis, keep it at hand. Also have a jaccuzzi tub when I am done working. Just the kitchen and livingroom. I am wanting round corners instead of square. I think they look nicer the reason I am wanting to do plaster. Speed skims DO NOT "flatten" the wall... They remove misses, but because its flexible they just follow the contours of the wall. So when you "shine the light down it" like you said, instead of having "misses", you'll have a wavey, wobbly, but smooth wall. OR, if you hold a straight edge on the wall, you'll see how un-flat it is, despite being smooth

My first diy plastering job was a disaster, the wall sucked way to fast even after sealing.Thankfully i managed to scrape it all off. It put me off plastering for a while as i thought every wall was like it and i was to slow. I did a chimney breast with a builder family member and it was a different ball game. Keep up the good work.

Get your first coat just get a even coverage 2 to 3 mil dont worry to much about trowel Mark's second coat about a couple mil leave it goes off slightly wet and square plaster up to polish. Great vid for beginners best smaller wall arear

I pretty much taught myself to skim plaster....A professional might be a bit sniffy but my results were pretty good. Took much longer than a pro to finish the job but then I saved a lot. If you can afford a pro do so, if you're short of cash, its doable with a bit of study. Practice on small areas first and , v.important.... keep your tools clean!!
