My 2017 has the 2.0 liter turbo. It's still plenty quick and is REALLY well balanced. I can take 20 mph curves at 70 without any tire squeal. You'd better know where you want to go with it before you steer it there, because it WILL do exactly what you tell it to. I also like the cruising range on a tank of fuel. Just normal highway driving I get about 35 mpg--which means I can go more than 600 miles on a tank of fuel. I don't even mind having to use premium. Camaros of this year all offered an 8-speed automatic, which I have to admit works really well, though I'd have preferred a manual.

I drove lots of rental cars in my life, because pre COVID I used to go on business Trips quite regularly and that line is absolutely true. From the second the „key is turned“ every rental gets a digital gas pedal which means either one or zero aka on or off. Hell I’d not buy a rental with only 20k miles on it for a 5th of its msrp. These engines are fucked after one or two years.

Protector of the Republic not true, Honda Civics make that all day for under $10,000. In Europe we have seat cupra and skoda vrs which share 90% of parts with the golf. In fact a stock seat cupra for £1900 comes with 230bhp stock with plenty of cheap options to hit 300bhp for under £800. Hatchbacks are what most of the world drives! Especially in England, France, Italy and Japan. Each of these countries have produced some amazingly fast hatchbacks over the years.

*TL;DR: never purchase the rental company's insurance unless you enjoy handing them a 2000% profit.* When I was working for Enterprise/National/Alamo, our regional manager flat-out told us that the optional damage waiver (aka extra insurance) is a massive money-grab. The waiver costs the company about 10 cents per day, and 80 to 90% of car insurance carriers give you the exact same protection at no extra charge if you call to inform them that you're renting a car. Rental companies pay so little for the coverage due to a huge percentage of damage claims being covered the renter's insurance, even when the waiver is purchased.

Yep. Used to work for Budget. Same thing. My credit card covers it. They try desperately to say that it doesn’t or they won’t accept it but I show them my coverages and ask them to show their specific rules that say I “have” to buy their “optional” collision damage waiver. Usually after that it’s a “better safe than sorry.” Nope.. I will be safe, and you’ll be sorry if you press it any further.

I had one of these for a few days while my Subaru was being repaired, courtesy of the dealer, provided by Enterprise. They gave me a choice between this exact model of Camaro, or a Kia Soul (lol). Definitely the most fun I've had in a rental car. I think you treated this thing waaaaay too nicely in your review - Hold the "Trac" button (right next to the gear shifter) for 4 seconds to turn off ALL stability and traction control (you will hear a beep), and you are free to ROAST the tires off this thing. When launching from 0 MPH (not a brake stand), the throttle will not "drop the hammer" unless you ABSOLUTELY mash the pedal all the way to the floor immediately. If you ease onto the gas smoothly, or even just a split second later, it will not squeal. But if you treat the pedal extremely aggressively, you can definitely spin the tires all the way through 1st gear on dry asphalt. My guess is there is some electronic throttle/ECU fuckery that is programmed to only open throttle wide open if you make this "gesture" with the accelerator (kind of the like the "switch" underneath the gas pedal on some automatic cars that has to be depressed to get it to drop down). I had never driven a Camaro before in my life, and the V6 felt a lot stronger and responsive than I expected. It had a higher redline than I expected, and barely any power dropoff near it. To someone who's never used a modern V8 before, the NA V6 felt more than "adequate" for this car. Very "smooth" feeling power delivery (could be just new car/engine mounts) too, the 8-speed auto gearbox actually feels performance oriented, and the engine sound is... well, to me, it sounds great. I can't put my finger on it, but in the cabin it has a really nice "howl" that can only be compared to the induction noise from an inline-6 BMW motor. As a side note, the V6 has some sort of cylinder management "displacement on demand" feature that only activated ONCE during the 8+ total hours I was driving the car - otherwise, all 6 "reactor cores" were burning. Not having driven many FR/RWD coupes, let alone American ones, the ride and handling felt "heavy" to me, but in that sense makes the ride ever more enjoyable. I knew I was driving something that one might *might* call a Muscle Car. It rotates into turns the way I always imagined it should, with a lumbering, but determined turn in, and then the ever-present risk/temptation of stepping out the rear as you apply throttle mid-corner. Achieving a nice neutral or light over-steer in this takes some aggressive throttle, but once the rear breaks out, feels very controllable and just exciting enough. The steering wheel itself is small and sporty-looking, provides no real road feel or feedback at lower speeds, but is precise and "accurate" feeling. This car is the definition of "drive by wire" in a sports car - very weird and initially annoying to experienced drivers, but does allow the car to come alive in certain situations. It's outstanding engine is dampened, and the experience feels too refined to be described as a "muscle car," even with all driving aids turned off. It's actually more similar to the driving experience I would expect to get from a "luxury" sports car from a "European" manufacturer. I'm a driver who cares first and foremost about performance. Is this car fast? Yes. It's one of the fastest cars I've driven, for sure. It's performance and "fun factor" are severely limited by the electronic driver input and safety aids, and for that reason, it will push people like me toward older, or more racy models that don't have these dampers. But for a rental car, I don't think you can find anything more worthwhile in any stable. I'm not exactly sure why this car was offered by Enterprise, and I woulden't be surprised if it originates from a clever marketing strategy by Chevy themselves. Bottom line is, it's an imitation muscle car that serves as a gateway drug for modern American sports car technology. I would never own one, but it *DID* make me fall in love with RWD... and now everything is ruined, and I want to run home and trade my WRX in for a C5 Corvette. >:[

I have one similar (2016, turbo 4 cylinder, not the base model). Lemme give you some info on the car that you may have missed: 1) The 3.6L "LGX" V6 makes 335 hp and 284 lb-ft, redline is 7200 RPM (which you probably didn't take it to). It's at least one order of magnitude better than the Cyclone or Pentastar V6s of the competition. Even though it has direct injection, it only needs regular gas to make the advertised power. 2) The 8L45 8-speed automatic has too many gears to use the paddles or manual mode. When needed, it can shift from 8th gear to 2nd gear immediately, far faster than trying to shift it yourself. Pairing the V6 with the automatic gives the V6 cylinder deactivation, so it is possible to get up to 40 MPG on the highway. 3) When you use the paddles to engage manual mode, typically you hold the upshift paddle for about a second to return to auto mode. 4) Visibility is definitely worse than the Mustang (even the S550), you HAVE to set and use your mirrors properly to merge or change lanes. 5) That bezel on the radio is only because it's the smaller 7 inch display. It looks much nicer with the 8 inch display that is optional on the base and standard on every other trim. 6) That is very much a beaten-up rental car. I've had mine for 8 months and 7000 miles with zero issues.

I'm guessing the renter didn't list you as an allowable driver? When you rent, they get very specific about who is allowed to drive it. I think in CA, the state law is that the spouse is automatically allowed. Also, many times the base Camaro/Stang is same price or less than Mid Size rental, which are typically a couple dollars more than the economy small car rentals. Fun fact: there are tiers in the rental car company world. Tier One gets brand new cars, keeps them for 12-18 months, then replaces with new cars. Tier One companies (Hertz, Avis, etc) are usually more expensive. Those Tier One companies then OWN a Tier Two company. That company gets the 12-18 month old hand-me-downs, and drives them another 18 months. Tier Two companies can offer cheaper rates on "the same car", but the condition and mileage is not the same. After 3 years or so in the rental fleet, cars are taken to auction and picked up by local used car dealers. That 40k mile Camaro advertised at the used lot might have had a rough life!

Ever since Ford & GM put more powerful Sixes in the Mustang/Camaro the base cars are worth owning now. My old '06 Mustang vert had the lame 210hp 4 liter; the 3.7 was a huge improvement. Of course now the Ecoboost replaced it and it is more tunable, but with the right exhaust the Six just sounded better imho.
@Nowheretorun7
@Nowheretorun7 7 жыл бұрын
v6 Camaro with the dual mode performance exhaust on a standard is actually not a bad car, it's actually a hidden gem, for the price of a BRZ/FRS you get a much faster and just as sporty car. Beats the 2017 ecoboost mustang numbers currently too (though the 2018 ecoboost mustang numbers if correct should beat this car) apparently the standard tranny on this car and the high revving engine makes it real fun though and you get a solid 0-60 time in about 5 seconds. Probably save on insurance and gas too - the car is actually comparable in performance from 0-60 as the 2010 Mustang GT which runs 0-60 in 5.1-5.5. The V8 in any of these cars is the superior option, but they are priced so much higher now especially with the same package options. Look at the 2018 mustang GT, just the base version of the 2018 GT with the performance package is running at 50,000$ now, throw a performance package on a V6 and you are still well under 40,000$. The only V6's that suck right now are on the Mustang (being phased out for 2018) and the Challenger, the Camaro V6 however is actually a relevant option - in fact with the 2018 Eco-boost Mustang performance numbers (0-60 in under 5) and this V6 (0-60 in about 5) and the price options being so much lower, the package options, the additional aftermarket options, it makes justifying buying the GT a lot harder. The only shitty thing is the social stigma "oh it's NOT a V8" etc from people, which to many people is really worth the extra 10-15k, despite the fact the people saying those things drive around in civics and mini vans.

The visibility isn't an issue. Want to know why? Camaro owners say so. It isn't an issue if the people who own the car don't mind. Chevrolet literally surveyed Chevy Camaro owners in 2014 when working on the 6th Generation Camaro and asked them if they wanted an updated design to improve visibility. Camaro owners loud and clearly said NO. That being said, the V6 is fucking incredible... that's coming from someone who absolutely hated their 5th gen V6. The new LGX motor and the 8-speed they mated up to make for an almost exotic experience. The sound is incredible up to 7250 RPM and the shifts are so quick and snappy on the upshift. If it weren't for the terrible downshifts it would be perfect. I have a few videos of me enjoying my straight piped LGX in the canyons.

splewy no, it's a lot harder to break the rear tires loose with the 2.77 open diff that you get with the auto. If it had the manual, which gets a 3.27 LSD, then yeah easy burnout. My 2.0T Camaro with the manual can break the tires loose.

its still in break in mode which limits power, my sisters turbo Buick didn't come alive till 5,000 miles , And torque converter transmissions actually doubles the torque because well torque converter jeez, Also limited slip dif makes it harder to do a burn out because it has to spin both wheels, a open dif only has to spin one wheel, thats why high hp cars come with a LSD to help them maintain traction.

Not really a muscle car. I'd say more a Pony car. I own the 2015+ V6 Mustang in stick (bias disclosure) and it's a great deal. The Camaro handles better and is faster but it's like sitting in a fort, can't see shit. The early 2000 Mustang and Camaro V8s had this type of HP. These new entry level pony cars are not the BRZ/FRS. They have plenty of power and are good handling. Cheaper to insure and run than the V8. And they don't sound like vacuum cleaners like the turbo 4s. I reccomend them to anyone who wants to support the last few examples of an affordable sports car. Because it's a dying breed my friends.

An easy fix for better reliability might be switching to the LV3 V6 from the GMC Sierra and using the same cam grind and bore and stroke as the LT1 V8 this would be good for about 341hp and since it would be cheaper than the 3.6 it could be the new base engine and they can just drop the 2.0T from the line up. This also would allow more parts in common on the assembly line saving on cost.
