Rep. Ilhan Omar admonishes UCLA chancellor for campus protest safety measures

Ilhan Omar used her time during Thursday's congressional hearing on antisemitism on college campuses to criticize UCLA Chancellor Gene Block for his school's response to violence that broke out during protests over the war in Gaza. Omar told Block he "should be ashamed for letting a peaceful protest gathering get hijacked by an angry mob."

A congressional hearing should be for the purpose of Congress people getting information they need to form good laws. But for most Congress people, the purpose of the hearing is to show themselves off to their supporters as faithful followers of the 'party line". The only justification for a Congress person making a statement during a hearing is if the statement serves to clarify what a subsequent question is all about. Insulting a witness is completely inappropriate even if the witness a despicable person.

He's answer was students were doing illegal protest. The right to assemble has been granted by the CONSTITUTION. They are within their right to protest. You can argue that they are disturbing other students but that does not mean they can allow outsiders into campus to ASSAULT students. How is that protecting the safety of the other students? If riots brakes out in the middle of campus, it compromised the safety of ALL students. As the leader of a college, he is responsible for the safety of these students, which he failed to do so.

It's not the colleges responsibility to ensure the safety of an of student organized event. It was the organizers responsibility to ensure that all the appropriate safety measures were in place and to ensure that protests remained peaceful. It was their protest, therefore The Organizers failed to do that. Yet, they expect the very people they're protesting against to ensure their safety. That is absolutely nuts. Rep. If they see things that could escalate and harm the students, then it is their responsibility to deescalate it. If fights brakes out, it can harm all the students. Instead of trying to get the situation under control, they decided to make it worse. The right to assemble has been granted by the CONSTITUTION. The students are within their right to protest. This failure is all the college's fault.

1. There is no such place as Palestine…never has been 2. Israel totally left Gaza in 2005, they could have built whatever they wanted with the billions of $ of aid…. They decided to build tunnels with all that $ 3. It is a stated primary goal of Hamas that Israel be annihilated by any means 4. Hamas has constantly reigned rockets down on Israel 5. There was a ceasefire on Oct 6th that Hamas broke on Oct 7th, resulting in the present war which has seen so much destruction and death, all on the hands of Hamas 5. Palestinians overwhelmingly support Hamas 6. Palestinian children are taught from the time they are toddlers to hate Jews and want them dead 7. Palestinians have been offered a state countless times and have rejected it each time. They don’t want a Palestinian state if srael is still in existence, they only want a Palestinian state that replaces Israel, not one that is next to Israel. I could go on but those are a few of the reasons that are actually at the root of all the tragedies. Perhaps a bit more eduction on the matter is required.
