What they fail to mention is that the lease for the land is $1 for 99 years but they don’t just give it to you and let you live. You have to buy the house they want to build on it and many native hawaiians simply cannot afford it, do not qualify for a mortgage, or do not qualify for enough of a loan to even consider the cheapest option. What good is setting aside land for natives if they can’t live on it with what they can afford? The land should be given to them and they decide what they will live in. A tent, a trailer, a house, a mansion, whatever.

I was born and raised in Hawaii but it’s just so sad that a lot of people can’t afford to live there anymore. But it’s totally legal and fine to have many people buying condos and more land for hotels

You have to be at least 50% Hawaiian but does that even exist anymore? Which is just sad. When you look at the cost of living, the cost of homes etc and the pay and you worry how do TRUE Hawaiians live on their Islands. The disrespect is historical while on the mainland they are fighting to tell the truth about Slavery, Jim Crow, and the systemic racism that is this country’s history, it has been also the case in Hawaii, and for the Indigenous populations all over now North America, as it wasn’t America for the many many years that the land was theirs. And the amount of land that they are getting is sad as it’s just a small piece when the Japanese and Americans from the main land are buying it up, making unaffordable for anyone to live there. Just heartbreaking.

Critical race theory is not just about America's enslavement of African peoples. The treatment of native Americans is also a dark and ongoing chapter in our history. How America treated its own citizens of Japanese descent during WWII is addressed by critical race theory. And, it also encompasses how we came to be in possession of Hawaii, and other territories. These are just a few examples of times America could have and should have done better. It is important to know our history, the good AND the bad, not to make anyone hate themselves for being white or something stupid like that - but to make sure that, as a country going forward, we ensure nothing like that ever happens again.

I remember learning about this on my own when I started studying the true history of the US as a child. By the time I was 12 I couldn’t stop. I needed to know what those in power have done to gain land, resources, and all the cultures they’ve attempted to destroy. Take people’s land, almost wipe them out, then toss them a bone like it’ll feed the whole pack.

@@user-sb2wl8zj7f If you're talking about Princess Kawananakoa, I can understand what you're saying. That aside, majority of those with Hawaiian blood, whose language is Olelo, who care for the Aina, are not at least 50% Native Hawaiian. Those that meet that specific qualifier are in the minority of the Hawaiian population (I am not talking about people who just live in Hawai'i btw). Hawaii is a place of such diversity, racially/culturally, that only going by that specific qualifier, you are dwindling down the amount of Hawaiians that will benefit.
@hmmmm.3899
@hmmmm.3899 3 жыл бұрын
I think the point is more that if you’re not at least 50% indigenous hawaiian than you’re not “hawaiian” anymore, or at least majority bloodline indigenous. Kamehameha Schools could probably use a similar policy as soo many native kids have been rejected from their institution while those with much less bloodline have attended. Or at least accept all hawaiians regardless of quantum, but I don’t know what the expense of that would be.

@@kevelephant1311 From my understanding, some of the applicants have been on the wait list for decades and are no longer with us anymore and their surviving family are "grandfathered" in. I do not know if this true, partially accurate, or just completely incorrect. If accurate, I don't know what any of the logistics are or how the qualifiers apply to their family.
