Sometimes my vacuum sealer won't seal regular mouth jars, and it's not because of knicks. But I learned a great tip from Rose Red Homestead: take an extra regular mouth lid and lay it upside down on top of the lid you want sealed to your jar. Then vacuum seal your jar. When you remove the attachment and that extra lid, your jar will be sealed with that bottom lid. Works every time for me now. Just thought I'd share.

THANK YOU! I have the same issue with regular mouth jars and the foodsaver. I would put an extra lid under there and it sealed BOTH down! Now, I know to invert it! Again, thank you!!

When I have a recipe calling for brown sugar, I add the "white" sugar directly to the recipe and then add the molasses separately. For one cup of dark brown sugar, I will add 1 cup of sugar and 2 tablespoons molasses to the recipe. It always works and saves a lot of time.

That is what I was thinking. I have those Costco (Kirkland) plastic bottles of syrup (that have shrank btw). One time I didn't refrigerate it. There was this weird white stuff when I went to pour some. Looked it up and it was a type of mold. I worry that repackaging might be a problem over the long haul. Once you open it...I don't know. It's good he re vaccumed sealed it though. I do however do this with my honey.

Rudy.... you can also use a piece of "press & seal" under the lid when you put it back on. Seals the lid, not as good as vacuum sealing, but the seal is between the glass jar and lid and adds extra sealing power to the existing cap on that jug

Excellent suggestion for long term storage, will definitely do this. Unfortunately for me though, it’s gonna take me a lot longer. I don’t know why, but our molasses in Canada, is very thick and slow to pour. We have an old saying “slow as molasses “. Yours just pours out nicely. And ours comes in little milk type cardboard containers. So I’m definitely going to switch all over to glass, but will take a long time 🤣. Thanks for all your help and ideas, I truly appreciate it!

There's a big difference in cane juice, cane syrup and molasses. Unless i was educated incorrectly molasses is made from sorghum, not sugar cane. We have an "Old Mennonite" community here that raises sorghum and makes molasses with horse drawn grinding/pressing process. I love to watch the juice wind backs and forth across the hot griddle being cooked over a wood fire.
@luwrolstad1274

Thank you, @Amanda H. I appreciate being corrected, so i don't information others incorrectly. I just thought the molasses was cooked longer than sorghum, hence the color and taste difference. I prefer sorghum for taste.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to give you a heads up on pet food. I was talking to my PetSmart manager today and he said his vendor came in for Royal Canin and I forget the second brand, but they are owned by Mars. He said they are stopping production of pet food for the foreseeable future because they can't source enough of what they need to make both people and pet food. I looked up what Mars owns for pet food when I got home. They produce 41% of the pet food in North America! Right now it's a couple of their brands, but if this gets any worse it could get really bad.

Honey has stayed good for many many years. If syrups or honey is reduced to around 82% total solids. It needs no canning and will resist bacterial growth for a very long time. Normally store-bought honey will be in that range of 80 to 82% total solids. Maple syrup is typically around the 75% range and will spoil without refrigeration or further reduction. In the case of sweet viscous liquids, it is the higher density of sugars to liquid ratio which prohibits bacterial growth.

I always put honey in jars also. If it crystalizes, glass heats up in hot water to turn it back into liquid. You can't use the hot water for the plastic, besides, what would the hot plastic emit into my honey? I HATE PLASTIC, anyways!!! I will not eat on styrofoam plates, use plastic glasses, or utensils. No plastic covering sandwiches or bowls of left overs. I just hate the stuff!!

So, you can vacuum seal maple syrup but not honey? Also, if I wanted to vacuum seal the molasses, could I? I kind of group all of these liquid sweeteners together, but don't want to cause botulism.

@Alaska Prepper I didn’t know that brown rice would not be good after a year or two. Could I cook, dehydrate and then vacuum seal the rice to make it shelf stable for years? I do not have freezer room.

Use para wax to fill in the jar for your seal. Cheap and better seal

I haven't used my sealer yet but I don't have the jar sealer I have no way of sterilizing and still being able to lift anything. But then I'm old enough to be your mother so...
