Thanks for the video! Another solution I found was this: I used an awl and a hammer and lightly tapped the broken off part to turn it little by little (it could not be grasped by pliers or nudged by a screwdriver). I tapped it laterally with as little downward force as possible. That took about 5 minutes but it came out little by little until I could grasp it with my fingers and get it out the rest of the way. I got that tip from the service department at Klein Honda in Everett WA, BTW, so thanks to them. Had the piece refused to come out with the awl and hammer, my next step would have been your method (a body shop might cost you a couple hundred bucks, I learned).

Nice job. You didn't even need to buy the Left hand drill bit or extractor set. My only concern would have been potentially breaking the threads. However, it seems like you did this very carefully. So great job in figuring out how to do it differently. But achieve the same result which is getting that little piece out. 👍

This is a great tip to save you the $75 for a new base (not including labor), which I guarantee is how the dealer will fix it. An alternate approach (which I just did myself 20 minutes ago): If you DON'T have the extractor bit or the reverse drill bit set and you DO have a Dremel tool (or similar) with cut-off wheel, carefully cut a slot thru the middle of the broken screw and use a flat blade screw driver to back it out. If you cut a little of the threaded female receptacle, that's not going to negatively effect anything. Use whatever method you have the tools to do and save yourself $75+.
@FixCarYourself2 жыл бұрын
I like it! Thinking outside the box. Nice job!!!
@FixCarYourself2 жыл бұрын
$75 for the base? Wow. The sad thing is the repair shop will recommend swapping the part, which means you'll pay for unnecessary labor (the real killer) and other parts. When all you need to do is spend less than 10 minutes doing this procedure. These repair shops need to think smarter instead of stealing money from its consumers. They should charge for less than 30 minutes of labor, and for the replacement antenna part.

These are left handed drill bits as well which change the forces applied
@FixCarYourself3 жыл бұрын
A left hand drill bit's threads are pretty much reversed in that the threads or flutes on it are structured in the opposite way of a regular drill bit. Think of it this way the antenna is screwed (turned) in clockwise (to the right). A regular drill bit is threaded in a way to be used when turning clockwise, which is why you can't use it because you'll just drill forward creating a hole in this case. The goal is to remove and to remove a screw or broken antenna, you need to go counter clockwise. So pretty much when you put a left hand drill bit on the piece of the broken antenna that is still stuck in its base, the LH drill will grip or bite the screw/broken piece and twist the remains of the antenna left or counter-clockwise. Therefore you can remove it fully.
@FixCarYourself3 жыл бұрын
BTW this Left hand drill can also be used for any kind of screw that has a damaged head or where you can't get a good grip on. Think of the top of a rusted screw if you can't get it off with a screwdriver, then you can use this handy tool to extract or twist the screw in a counter-clockwise direction to remove.

Actually I believe you could do this. Just having a power drill and a left hand drill bit set and replacement antenna is all you need. Do it slowly and you'll get it out. Let me know if you have any other questions if you work on this. If you do take it in to them make sure they don't charge you a lot for a job that takes less than 30 minutes to do.

The problem is I don’t own any of those things and I can’t see the top of my car unless I’m standing inside the door (I’m 5’2).
@FixCarYourself3 жыл бұрын
@@erindianis5544 Ok. Standing from the inside works (I'm short too), unless you have a step stool. A basic power drill costs $30 to $40, the left hand drill set is about $20, the actual antenna could range from $15-$40. If you think you might do other small basic household repairs then the power drill is a great investment. If you have a friend with those tools even better. If you don't do this, then price shop. No reason for you to spend an arm and a leg on this or get ripped off at a dealership.

Just got to be carful of the threads 👍
@FixCarYourself3 жыл бұрын
yes good call. This is why its best to use a small drill bit and then the next closest drill bit size. The goal is not to drill the sides that being the threads.

That worked great, thanks for sharing.

Anyone know if the actual base is ripped off from a car wash? Cannot find any videos on this repair 🤔
@FixCarYourself7 ай бұрын
Depends on the model and vehicle. The base is usually screwed and secured from the inside which means the headliner would have to be completely (or mostly) removed. Not a quick task unless you want to remove the headliner.

Mine is rusted though, what would you do in that situation?
@FixCarYourself2 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing the top part is rusted, but the core is probably still good. I would do this drill approach. My antenna top probably had some rust on it, as the antenna was broken/missing for about 4 months. Yet, this still worked for me.

Lucky you did't dent scratch the roof with that drillbit, also... the usual way to remove things like this is with a left threaded tap, just drill small hole and insert the left threaded tap, since its conical it will eat itself and gets stuck, right then the broken piece will come out, you got luck that it came loose, but it could have end up just drilling drilling and there goes your thread... bit risky job.
@FixCarYourself Жыл бұрын
That's what I used was a LH drill bit tap. You could also use an extractor bit.
