you did a great job. I had an old timer plasterer tell me years ago that plastering techniques are as individual as a thumb print. No two plasterers techniques are exactly the same. Told me they never had 2 guys texture in the same room, or at least on the same wall or ceiling

Even two guys using the same equipment on the same day(orange peel or knockdown) can very rarely match the other guy's work. Someone who can come in and convincingly match a repair to the original finish is truly an artist.

We did a lot of this in Florida in the 80's using Type-F over mesh tape...no mixing of different products like you did. It was called a skip trowel texture. The typical pattern was not a dragon, but overlapping arcs from various directions. The pros could load an 8th-inch skim over a big section, then go back to the starting point and skip trowel the finish into it after the type-f started to set a little during the skim.

With practice you can write your name in the texture without it being obvious. I have spray texture in my house. I used a wet rag at the edges of my patches to feather the edges below the bumps of the texture. Then I applied texture over the new, smooth parts and painted. This ended up blending better.

Skim coating my basement ceiling now. I didn’t realize how much work it is. Now I see why people just put drywall over popcorn instead of removing and skim coating. 😬
@als1023

Or you can skim coat the popcorn, and save the removal process. Renting a proper drywall sander and vacuum, to cut down the popcorn a bit, can save a lot of work too.

He’s right about not priming before texture. I work for a custom home builder on the west coast. They have all the drywall finished, doors and closet shelving hung before priming. That texture looks okay on the ceilings, but horrible on the walls. I use that same drywall knife. Just dry it off after cleaning it or you will be sanding the rust off haha

The more I watch your video's the better and faster I get man! The over head work is more tiring definitely! Hey is there anything wrong with spraying down my mud ever so often with a water spray bottle to keep it soft and pliable? Even all purpose light starts drying out quickly once in the tray.

I don't know if you're going to keep the skip trowel ceiling look or not, but if so you can just blend in the the skip trowel look with your finish layer of mud, I did that to a ceiling years ago, it matched up pretty well

Regarding the camera, I actually like this one! Granted I'm visually impaired, so take this with a grain of salt, but most of your videos I usually find myself guessing as to what's going on, as all the walls and ceiling are just one consistent white surface to me, which like when I try to mud in real life. That one little tip near the end about holding the trowel flat to the wall so it's stuck seems to have unlocked something in my head. Thank you! :D

Seeing you use a regular drywall knife instead of a trowel makes me wonder if you've ever used one of the offset style knives. Kind of a hybrid. I rather like them, especially if I'm doing a lot of drywall work at once.

I do painting in apartments (between tenants leaving and new tenants are coming). I sometimes have to do repairs on ceilings... it gets me nervous because I don’t know how to make those textures. It seems every drywall guy has his style but I never got to see one in action, and finding YT videos about the technique is even harder (I thought it was sort of secret very very well kept! 😅) Thanks for showing us how the texture is done (by end of video). Ah, the secret is in the rounded trowel ! 👍 At 9:57 - You are not mentionning what is that dark mud you’re putting on the ceiling... darn, another secret ! 😉

So basically it's a knock down texture? Trowel on. Brush/ knife/ plastic widget. Knock down with trowel. What's really cool is when people use drywall mud/ concrete/ plaster to make moldings, appliqué or relief art. That's what I want to try. Sad, lopsided dragon coming someday. 😞😫

Yes, b/c out went popcorn ceilings for covering up ceiling issues and than enters skip trowel and knockdown as the most popular types of ceilings in USA, and orange peel on walls. Me, I enjoy and like a level 5 finish; which only get to do in very high end custom homes. So, it’s funny how your interested in this and bored with flat, and I’m bored with this and love doing flat😂 (Saying holds true about grass and being greener huh😉) Cheers✌🏻

I specialize in level 5 finishes. In our own 1970s home remodel, we've kept as many of the "acoustic" ceilings as possible to give some contrast to the flat walls and sharp corners. About half of the ceilings were trashed from leaks that the former owners neglected to address until they were beyond saving. We have cathedral ceilings, and a level 5 finish therr would turn those rooms into echo chambers if not for leaving the "popcorn" in place.

I despise texture walls and ceilings. They're so much more difficult to repair and match. Quick question about undoing knockdown texture when it's already been painted. Would it be better to scrape and sand before applying smooth finish coats or just go right into applying multiple layers of finish coat to fill the gaps and level everything?

Just fix the repaired area. Any extra mud material that succeeds past the repair area wash away with a wet cloth almost like your melting it into the existing texture so there’s no hump. Then texture just the area you repaired feathering it lightly into the existing texture and again washing away just the edges melting it into the existing texture

No, I will NOT get used to textured walls! I had textured walls in my house in El Cajon CA (San Diego area) for 23 years, and it is a BITCH to paint! If I ever had to do THAT house again I'd skim coat them all smooth first! Then when we bought our house in Kansas, the kitchen and both bathrooms had swirly texture they had applied to cover up 1970s velvetized wallpaper. (There's still some of that stuff left on the wall in the back of one bathroom vanity that I'll get rid of one of these days when I pull that solid oak vanity out to refinish it). So I scraped off all the high points and then skim coated all of it until I got them as smooth as virgin sheetrock, primed and painted it.

All you youtube guys doing completely flat walls, and I have honestly never seen a home with flat walls in my life, lol. Everything here has mostly orange peel, but sometimes a knockdown or skip trowel on walls, and orange peel, popcorn, or, rarely, a featherduster swirly pattern on the ceiling.
