Repairing a Milwaukee K500 ST Hammer that has lost its hammer and is no longer hitting hard.

These milwaukee hammers wouldn't be the best machines on the market. They are prone to the hammer pipe or striker inside failing and destroying the machine.
They are also I find, very low on grease when new. They simply do not install enough grease during manufacturing for the amount of empty space inside the gear box.
If your looking to buy a hammer, i would recommend a Bosch hammer GSH 11 E over these Milwaukee's any day.

Here’s why hilti’s are one of the best. Very few of their tools run on grease. Only a select few of the smaller hammer drills. Most of their line up of hammer drills run on oil. And some have different chambers that separate the gearing from the piston and striker. That chamber is usually oil filled so they are certain the o rings around the hammer mechanism never run dry. That’s quality there

I must say you are one of the best tool repair channels I've seen the best to be honest and we can all learn I ting or too from you and I've only found your channel a couple of days ago which is amazing because I have searched a number of times for repairs like this and your channel never popped up but tell me what is the name of that grease you use and I presume it's good enough to use in all machines out from Hilti power tools I suppose

The thick grease is bosch 001. And the lighter white grease is hilti hammer grease

@@repairs524 NGLI 000 or NGLI 00 viscosity grade gearbox grease. The goopy white Hilti grease looks like NGLI 000.

Hammers need to come with an hour counter honestly. A tiny OLED display somewhere to display the runtime hours. Would help massively with service intervals and counting the runtime hours in general. Klauke has a tiny OLED information display on their machines and they are a small specialized manufacturer so Bosch, Makita, Milwaukee etc can do it too then.

Could you tell me what type of grease you use please ? Have an old Boschmann breaker that hasn't been used in years and hammers sticking quick tap of chisel on floor and goes again hammers really well when going but must be due a service .Regards Bryan

So get brushed tools so when they go bad u can just put new bearings and brushes in them, then to buy brushless, also got the Milwaukee M18 surge impact is there anyway to upgrade it to get more torque from it it really lacks on torque it puts screws in great but it could really use more power

Dear @Dean Doherty I received a remarkably similar Wurth BMH-40-XE hammer with some other used tools. It looked good in the box so I thought it might work. Tried it out and no hammer action. Your video was the only one that I have found got into the nitty-gritty of actually fixing one of these. It was my first time ever touching a hammer so I had to open it up to looky-loo and troubleshoot. A bunch of oil came out that was unexpected for me. Poked around and nothing seemed wrong. Ran it slow with the cover off and no hammering motion, I noticed if I pushed the chuck with the cylinder sleeve in all the way back the piston would sometimes try and push it out like it was trying to work. I have not needed a hammer before but have a few personal jobs in the future that might benefit. Is it worth buying a seal kit (US$35-42 with a piston the kit is almost US$100) and oil to try and fix the hammer or do I sell it as broken and just rent a hammer when I need it?

The BMH-40-XE wurth is actualy a bosch hammer. wurth dont make many tools so rebrand a bosch gbh 5 as their own. is the piston moving at all ? the piston is driven by the eccentric gear at the back. this gear is driven directly from the armature. make sure the gear on top of the armature that drivers everything is not stripped of sheered of. (small one in the center) after that, it is probably a selector issue. make sure the selector in the top cover is locating into rim of the selector gear below it.

DONT do that. You need a low viscosity gearbox grease. NGLI 00 or NGLI 000 viscosity grade.

@@bumblingfool For sealed! gearboxes that are expected to run for extended periods of time and heat up aswell you want the most liquid grease available. It will flow around and keep everything coated in lubricant. The goopy white grease you see Dean puttin into this hammer is NGLI 000 viscosity. BUT when you have a gearbox that is NOT sealed well you cant use such grease because it will leak out. Some Bosch hammers have gone a step further and use straight oil in the gearbox.

For that size of hammer, mist go with the bosch. But the metabo is of similar quality and built style, plus it is a bit cheaper than the bosch. U see more and more hire companies using metabo hammers. Other option would be the makita, they are more complicated and expensively made. And also more expensive to buy.

Do you ever consider the moral hazard of keeping Milwaukee’s alive and thereby encouraging boys to keep buying them? Instead of “this’ll be easy - just 2 o-rings, an hour or less of Dean’s time and some grease”; it must be tempting to tell the customer “dumpster is out back. Come in after you’ve binned the red rubbish and I’ll sell you a Bosch”
