Dang Ron... you working your brain overtime today. Glad you put this together to show how tricky it can be to troubleshoot these machines without solid circuit diagrams. Your making progress, but it would definitely be easier to fix things with the right information.

We're gonna figure it out... without the schematics if you kind of track it down it helps you learn how stuff works so it's o.k.!

That 74LS138 close to the UART on the left side is most likely is used for remote use of the Jukebox from a remote head unit.

Loved this video.. Never seen a jukebox board before.. and troubleshooting w/o schematics is interesting! I was really hoping that bad inverter was going to be the cause of it missing the signal to stop the motor too (I'm envisioning the PIA not being enabled because of some address or CS line not getting through.) Thanks for posting this.

Oh yeah.. and LOVE the physical buttons on the new control panel. I hate membrane buttons. It looks like it's gonna last another 40 years with your mod!!
@LyonsArcade2 жыл бұрын
Yeah unfortunately those membranes are crappppppp if I could have fixed that I would have, and we tried, but you're left with few options if one of those lines breaks. I tried conductive paint on a dartboard, that didn't work very well.

I think I would bypass the switch on the battery holder, or at least hot glue it in the ON position. The slightly low 5V line likely isn't affecting it, but if any chips are borderline on the high pull-up, that slightly lower voltage could stop a high being properly detected. Looking forward to seeing this fixed up, as I know you already have fixed it as you only upload videos once you've got it working :)

I'm going to do a video on the way they did the power, it has 5.7 running in, then running through a regular 1n4004 diode and it lowers it to 4.7. They then tacked a second diode on the top of that one. I think they're trying to lower the amperage through each diode, with the hopes it will raise the 4.7 to about 5... but I haven't tried it yet (I just put one diode back). They're in parallel (soldered on top of each other)
@SiaVids2 жыл бұрын
@@LyonsArcade Try replacing the diodes with some same rated schottky diodes as they have about half of the forward voltage drop.

seems to have a lot of bad chips scattered around the board. I wonder if it had some kind of "event" that damaged multiple chips at once? that '138 and '04 are not directly connected to the wiring, so it probably wasn't static. maybe the 5V went to 7V or so at some point? Fortunately all the chips on there are socketed which makes testing a lot easier.

This is the same machine that had the smoked up power supply so yeah it could have gotten spiked at some point....

They needed a buffered data buss. It appears they way they chose to do the the buffering is with a cheap inverter IC. You can only drive so many loads with a TTL output.
@LyonsArcade2 жыл бұрын
They've got those 273's in there too but I'm still learning. It seems like a nice clean little design to me though, it's even laid out well. No unobtaninum either, outside of the actual PCB itself.

Does anyone know why they used inverted buss logic? was it for noise immunity or what?
@AliusScitmelius2 жыл бұрын
If they named it as 'display and light bus' instead of 'inverted data bus' then nobody asks why it is named as it is. There is inverting darlington transistor arrays in that bus for displays and lights - only one eight bit inverter is needed for whole bus. In later models PCB 58399-1A the 74HC273 drives directly led display and inverted bus is not needed.
@waynegram89072 жыл бұрын
@@AliusScitmelius but why are they using an inverting Darlington transistors array? I guess they are using inverted segments displays. Mostly Darlington transistors aren't used to invert the logic signals on the buss unless the IC chips input pins need an active LOW
