I replaced my turbo in a relatively same engine and had a similar problem of no boost. The vacuum lines from the vacuum pump and to the actuator were not on correct. Check all vacuum lines and connections to the actuator. Also make sure all Egr piping is on correct as this can cause no boost. Finally check the turbo is still ok by pulling the intake piping off and giving the wheel a wiggle. Don’t worry about the smoke for now just check around the turbo to make sure it is none of these issues. Goodluck!

Good practice to remove and clean intercooler and all pipework and change oil and filter when a turbos blown mate if your replace for a brand new one and there's old metal filings and bits from when the old turbo went it will just kill the brand new one

Ive worked on a few of these golfs. I would definitely check the oil pickup see if its blocked. Thats what could of killed the original turbo. But i would of done an oil change and flushed the intercooler as well. So if there is any metal flakes from the old compressor wheel it would be clean from the engine. Do an oil change first and see it the oil has any metal flakes in it. Then check the oil lines. The smoke will clear it self after a few good runs.

Seeing you getting stuck in on the driveway is such a great refresher for this channel again. I lost interest for a while when it was the MX5, civic etc and it was mostly just talking about work being done elsewhere - seeing you doing it yourself again is where it's at!

Check your vaccum lines are on correctly and arn't damaged and clean out the intercooler properly, i recommended filling it with petrol and leaving it to sit for an hour or so before draining and repeat a couple times to get a thorough clean. There will be metal shavings from the blown turbo and oil still in there circulating and sucking into ur new turbo

Did you put the bottom engine mount back on when you were rocking the engine to get the turbo out

To me it sounds like a boost pipe isn't on correctly.. If they aren't pushed in all the way it can blow off under load. Check that and also manifold as I heard the nuts can come loose on them. Hope it's an easy fix. 🤞🏾

agreed and also these cars are common for pipe fixings to ware/brake off, from what you've said I'd guess it's a intercooler hose that has popped off :)

A good practice on the 1.9tdi and 2.0tdi engines is that when ever you replace turbo always fit a new oil feed line as the amount of times people have changed turbo on 1.9tdi and not changed line and end up in same place

Sounds like there’s a intercooler pipe not connected n sounds like when you’ve when to give it some boost it’s blew it off n the smoke will be loads until it’s burnt every bit of oil out dpf/cat and rest of exhaust mate takes a good few days/weeks took my old Fabia 2 weeks till it completely burnt it all out

Definitely oil pick up pipe done loads of them take the sump off clean the pick up pipe refit should be a good one then turbo is starved of oil at the moment hope this helps

You need to think why the original turbo blew (probably oil starvation) so you should make sure all oil feeds are flowing free first. Also did you pre lube the new turbo? If you didn't then it would seize in a couple seconds

Smoke will be from the oil still in the exhaust system. You’ll need to clear it all out and potentially decat if the cat is full of oil. Had this on a mk4 golf, it will eventually burn off after clearing it out.

You may have just inadvertently saved me from making a mistake when i swap my K03 out for my K04 on my GTI lol But seeing you swap a turbo gives me the confidence i can easily smash on through and get it done.

good work Jesse! I'd highly recommend you clean the intercooler, air filter, change the oil filter too...had to pay for this all to be done when my previous 2017 astra gtc blew its turbo twice!!

Your dpf or cat is probably blocked from the old turbo failing. just disconnect the exhaust before them and give it a quick try. It will be loud and dont run it for long as you could melt something

Jesse I might be able to help you out with that no boost issue what you are hearing is an air leak coming from the outlet of the turbo or the Intercooler pipes them self also check the intake manifold flap where the hose connect also as they can come loose if it’s non of them check the n75 valve witch is the vacuum control or the n259 that controls the gasses of the egr Hope this helps mate, as I own an Audi with a similar engine pd love them

Had same issue with mk4 tdi after changing the turbo no boost so I made a diy smoke tester to check for boost leaks and found the issue

I'd check PCV valve not clogged. Crank pressure from bad PCV can get forced up the oil drain on the turbo and blow oil out the turbo "seals" both hot and cold side ( look up turbo seals, they're not actually seals, they rely on the turbo spinning, a clear turbo drain and gravity). Oil being shoved through intake will soil your plugs and give misfires. Also the intake being off would be a vacuum leak and the engine would run rough due to getting fuel / air mixture wrong as what the MAF says is coming in is different to what is.

Im feeling your pain at the moment Jesse, i gave a 1.9 tdi Touran exactly the same engine as this golf, im getting an issue where under acceleration it does that same struggling/bogging down however it only does it sometimes like i can drive around all day and its fine then the next day it will do it if i give her a bit of beans Hope we both can get the issue sorted if would be cool to bounce ideas and solutions off each other

check what the MAF is reading, on idle should be 4g/sec, at 1,400rpm 8g/sec and 2,100rpm 12g/sec. if a boost hose is off you should see it here. Whenever I change a turbo my first check is "oil flow" and I do this by idling the engine and cracking of the oil return pipe on the block side to see if oil is getting through.

Check to see if all the pipes are connected properly and maybe try change the oil I had a similar issue on the same car when I changed a turbo and I changed the oil and double checked the pipes and it was fine after

Have another look at the oil return pipe mate. Looks kinked. Done this myself on my BKD over a weekend. Can be tricky. Has the actuator been setup correctly? You’ll get there mate. Well done so far. 👍

Quick tip. Toothpaste works well as a cutting compound polish either for headlights or marks. Also wd40 gets rid of haze on lights and is quick and easy

Was a good turn around and you should always strip everything off an old turbo before you bin it , regarding the smoke you'll get that as will have oil sitting in the exhaust system so will take while to burn it off

When you get the wings painted get the number plate holder/grill surround painted in the Same red, looks a little different more modern and since it’s not a gti I think it’s a good decision anyway 👌

check all boost pipes and vacuums again. also sometimes you have to set the actuator and set it upyou can also take intake pipe of and check the turbos spinning up okay

Cant believe you didnt check and clean all the pipes amd intercooler, you need to change all the oil and filters mate when i turbo goes. Take sump off check like whats been said pickup pipe always het blocked when they go.

The other thing that's concerning is because the previous turbo had a mechanical failure there could be some metal from the propeller wheel that's ended up in the intercooler / intercooler piping and then been sucked into the new turbo.

That oil could just be what's left over from the old 1 going bang in the exhaust , and you took the injector harness plug off , so maybe just scan it clear and codes and take it for a rip on the duel carriage way 🤷

2 things, spray some soapy water through your exhaust to get rid of as much as you can. 2. Keep driving it, the boost will come, the car has adapted all its parameters for no boost. They'll calibrate once it starts to see the boost is there

For reference you need a new oil return pipe when fitting a new turbo as the company won’t honour the warranty otherwise. We get this all the time when doing new turbos

I know your up north but would you be interested in a ford focus mk2 1.6 petrol with some issues it needs the break lights sorting and needs a engine mount only thinking of you for your channel it has proline alloys on it

10:25 you scratched the door with the wing be more carefull haha... also you never cleaned the exhaust out all the oil is in the downpipe also why at 34:57 is the oil return covered in oil and so is the driveshaft did you forget to tighten this up

Hi Jesse loving the videos. Cars are never straight forward unfortunately they always like to make our lives hard. It sounds to me like a boost pipe isn't on correctly as a few others have said so check those and hopefully it's something as simple as that. I have found that boost pipes and clips from this era of vw and audi wear out and no longer hold in tightly so they blow off under boost or just don't stay connected correctly. Whenever I do a turbo at work I find it best practice to replace the oil feed pipe at the same time because as a few others have said they can block up and ruin your new turbo. The smoke will be fairly normal as well with all of the old oil still in the exhaust and if a boost pipe has come off then the engine will be running very rich so hopefully with the boost problem fixed the smoke should clear after a decent drive. Keep up the good work mate. 👍

Im thinking engine is toast. All the metal shavings from the cold side failure has gone through your cooler through the throttle body through the intake valves into the bores . Probably done intake valves rings scored the bores and done the exhaust valves, theres your misfire.

I would check the intercooler pipes are connected properly. That sounds like a pipe has come off. Good effort though!!

Check your vacume lines and that you actually have vacume when engine is on at different places. I would also just check the plug for the injectors as its been off worth checking no bent pins or anything as a injector would cause a missfire.

Sounds like a boost hose isn't connected by how loud the engine is, also the turbo drain look kinked which will not help if got an over oiling issue

Just given you a follow, coming across a fake account of you on FB 😂. I do fixing up and trading on, and Golf’s/Polo’s are a staple diet. Regarding the wings, this is just VW Tornado Red (I believe this is what you have) or it may be Flash Red. Over time the paint dulls and when you try and match it with fresh paint the only choice you have is to blend. You can cut and polish the panels around the newly painted parts to blend it a little more but your only choice really is to blend into the doors, bumper and bonnet. Also it looks like you have the common rot on the sills, so make sure that’s not gone through and get those sorted.

MaxSpeedingRods are absolute garbage. Bought some coilovers for my E90 and they kept going through the top mount. Wouldn't touch their chinesium rubbish again

You’ve popped a boost hose off. Most likely on the intercooler. The smoke is just excess oil in the exhaust,it will burn off

@@sleepeasywithwhitenoise3860 you definitely don't have a qlue. Driving a diesel on low revs on short distances will block the dpf and in will kill the turbo!! Unless if you gutted the dpf and egr then yes it won't kill the turbo.

Smoke is because the exhaust full of oil and wen hot will burn off and check boost pipes are on correct also sounds like u have a manifold blow mate

Clean the intercooler and line out and the exhaust will be full of oil causing the smoking plus could be causing a back pressure so give it a short drive with the exhaust disconnected.

You got an Emissions Garage warning . See if your Diagnostic tool will run a DPF CLEAN , put some DPF cleaner in fuel tank and run a DPF Clean

Check for either boost leaks or vacuum lines. As for the oil could just be excess in exhaust and intercooler so don’t mind it for now

Pull pipe off turbo and check the new one first port of call. See if its seized or collapsed. Hope its not to bad for ya

Surely all the cat/dpf is rammed full of oil (why its still smoking) + the o2 sensor is going to be DRENCHED would not surprise me if it is running rough. Does surprise me that it hasn't thrown an engine light

The smoke is the oil that’s been let into the dpf so I would take the dpf off to check it possibly replace it or get it cleaned, I would also check if you have plugged the injection harness back in properly

Ive just replaced one stupid guy took car 24 hours later hadnt started, 15 miss calls and his attitude screaming down the phone saying im waiting for turbo. He didnt clean intercooler or take sump off 400 miles later bang. Got a new 1 fitted from pdparts its smokes still so need to take for long drive had new oil feeds and intercooler. Got a small misfire so hopefully can sort that out and enjoy the upgrade gt1752

This is wat happens wen pple on youtube who know nothing about cars try making money from videos....now wen I do a blown turbo first thing I do is full intercooler set up pipes etc of car,cleaned and all pipes checked for cracks,all vac pipes checked,drain oil,turbo off,then sump off clean all sum etc and new pick up pipe,fill turbo we bearing oil,disconnect crank shaft sensors and spin car over couple times,then start car... never had no problem.....also would of flushed all exhaust out and clean cat out etc before starting

Somethings clogged or blocked somewhere. I wouldn't run it too much in case the turbo is deprived of oil. I think it's something called the pick-up line in the sump that can get cloggy. Also, check anything that may have been contaminated with oil like the air filter, glow plugs, oil return line, egr valve, intercooler, cat etc etc.

Double check all the intercooler pipes there are a pain in arse sometimes the clips don't always got on the first time mine did that once had no boost then found the one behind bumper wasn't on properly

I’ve got a seat Ibiza mine has same problem turns out it was the camshaft sensor mine wasn’t boosting or smoking changed the sensor and it’s fixed all problems try that

You could’ve literally stripped the turbo down cleaned it and just changed the core of the turbo and it would’ve been perfect. Did it on my Volkswagen caddy van 👌

When the turbo blew you really could have done with striping everything off Every pipe will be full of oil and the exhaust system will also be full of oil and maybe the dpf is also blocked up with gunge too
