Repairing the Cheapest Planer Thicknesser (Is it worth it?)
This is not an instructional video, just a bloke repairing his workshop equipment, Enjoy.
Fellow woodworking enthusiasts, greetings.
In this video I partially strip down a budget priced planer thicknesser, and repair the the problems.
Planner thicknesser issues
Blades
Infeed table
Fence
I used the following system to repair my planer thicknesser
First remove and order new blades, £25
In my opinion, it is hugely beneficial to use a specialist saw sharpening company.
Remove the planer fence. The aluminium fence on all planers are diabolic, ridiculously easy to fail.
Strip the planer infeed table. I wanted to examine the mechanism for the planer infeed table rise and fall. I found no option to make any adjustments.
My solution for the planer infeed table was to fix it in position. I allowed for a 1 mm cut on the planer infeed bed. That should be enough to successfully plane most timber densities.
The planer infeed bed adjustment is a crucial stage before setting the new planer blades in position.
That said planer blades are troublesome to adjust. I found there was no fine adjustment for the planer blade depth setting. This planer thicknesser comes with a spring loaded system, but after 3 years of use, the springs were missing. However, I consider that planer blades need to be set far more acurately than using a spring.
I use a block to trap the blades down into position, then tightened the cutting block. In the video, I got this stage complete in a few seconds. In real life, probably around 5 or 6 minutes.
The planer fence is extremely easy to lose alignment. I decided to fix the planer fence at 90 degrees and tighten everything down. Even after this, the planer fence decided to creep out of alignment.
This planner thicknesser is absolutely the bottom end of low priced budget equipment. That said, so far over the last three years this model has proven durable. I was pleased with the final outcome and planer accuracy.
Ultimately, I think if your budget for woodworking is not as colossal as you would wish for, then this type of planer thicknesser is a good purchase.
You will need to get the spanners out once in a while, but that's ok.
Enjoy
