I may be a bit of a purist snob, but I can't stand that rapid fire. I walked away from a Galaga I played that had it. Shooting ducks in a pond is how I felt. Of course, Galaga was my game as a teenager. Taking it to the kill screen was pretty easy to do. The machine we had in our bowling lanes would kill at stage 256. It was eventually cycled out but after I requested the vendor to bring it back, they brought us one that had a new rom in it that would go past that stage. I think it had been used for a contest related to the War Games movie thus needed the ability to go past the kill screen. Which delighted me to no end. I played that machine for hours and hours on a quarter one day. Started in the morning and played until well after dark. And like I normally did after I got tired I would hand my game over to a kid and see how fast they would take to get killed off. I forget what my score was now but the kid asked and the next week he brought in a Guiness Book of World Records and showed me that I had blown away the then world record. Typical nonchalant teenager I was like "Cool" and shrugged. But I was always secretly proud of that though I'm sure that my score has been beaten many many times over by now. I'm still pretty darn good at that game in my mid 50's but it has to be a real cabinet with that short 2 way joystick. I really don't like playing with the taller 4/8 way joysticks in an emulator or combo cabinet. Just does not have the same response and feel. Playing a real cabinet is like saying "hello" to a freind you haven't seen in awhile and giving it a hug when I lay my hands on the controls. I need to go find one around here now.

I had one of those 4 in 1 home game systems featuring Galaga, Ms Pacman, Mappy, and Xevius. When my nephew would brag he could beat me at any video game, I would whip out the 4 in 1 and school him on early 80's arcade games

One of the first arcade machines I picked up was a Galaga. Non working of course. Learned that this boardset is one of the tough ones to work on but I prevailed. I ran into issues when I had the power supply set to 5v @ the board. As you stated these like 5.2 - 5.3v at the connector. I posted that these boards like to be run hot on KLOV and got roasted by some of the know it alls there. I learned pretty quickly to not bother sharing info on that forum due to some of the "smart" guys there. i'm glad you confirmed what I already had learned. Ironically enough I'm picking up another broken Galaga saturday. *My original is long gone.

Namco has said (in their book series Namco Museum Hyper Laboratory) that the first game in the series is Taito's Space Invaders. Taito has been reported as highly flattered and honored to have inspired their rival's shoot-em-ups. Gaplus is Galaga's sequel, in fact the name means "Galaga Plus". But Galaga doesn't seem to be a contraction of Galaxian... unless there's some Japanese word that fits in there somewhere. I hope someone watching this has info about that, my research has hit a dead end. EDIT: Thanks to @brianperkins6121 who says "ga" is Japanese for "moth", it seems Galaga might be a contraction of "Galaxian moth" referencing a greater variety of insectoid ships. Of course this is unconfirmed speculation. You can see how terrible the rapid fire is during the first challenging stage. It is possible to hit the button faster than the rapid fire would allow, and hit more targets. Also, your shot percentage goes way down with it on. But you probably don't care about that.

This game is so addictive!! I never noticed how some of the shots go through the "bugs" and they don't explode... Their takin our Jerbs!! I mean Their takin our quarters! That is a very nice machine.

Absolutely love Galaga, and its successor, Galaga’88. Spent many years in a place called Barry Island in south wales, uk back in the late 70s-early 80s because dad was heavily involved with security and a donut stall on site😀. Got to swap donuts for fairground rides but this was my ‘go to machine in the arcade- along with Galaxians and Space Invaders part 2. Love seeing you bring my childhood back 👍🏻

Galaga!!! Definitely in the top 5 of all time greatest. It has truly stood the test of time! I did not know about the power hungry nature of the Galaga PCB! Learned something new there!! I own both a Galaga and a Galaga 3. (Gaplus) I go back and forth on which I like the most! My Galaga 3 control panel actually came from Joe's classic Video games. Ron had it on the KLOV several years ago. Interesting to note Galaga 3 and Super Pacman use the exact same control panel!. The layout and configuration is exactly the same. Obviously the overlay is different and Galaga 3 uses and 8 way joystick, but the panel itself is identical! Thanks for the video Joe!

One of my favorites. For me Galaxian was similar, and good too. Really like the channel. BTW.... you need the double ships on the rounds before the Challenging Stages in order to kill all of the enemies. You can get the double ship last before the "bonus (challenging) rounds", stay perfectly in the middle where the game sets you, and destroy all of them. The Challenging Stages are the main reason to have double ships. Just thought I'd let you know in case you become addicted like I did once upon a time! 😛
@LyonsArcade2 ай бұрын
Then you immediately make yourself twice as easy to kill 1 man though. It's a trick to get you to lose a life quicker.
@4GuitarTrance2 ай бұрын
@@LyonsArcade No... if you set it up to only get two ships at the very end of the level before the Challenging Stage, when all enemies have been destroyed except the last ship that captures and gives you two ships, then you don't have to be worried about getting killed. Again, once you get to the Challenging stage, you leave your ships in the middle where the game places you, then tap-shoot as fast as possible, by doing so you kill ALL of the enemies in the Challenging Stage. Then it gives you an extra ship for having killed all of the Challenging Stage enemies... so if you lose one of the ships in the next level you haven't lost anything... it gave you an extra ship for clearing the Challenging stage. If you do not lose your second ship in the next level or levels after, you've gained another ship. There is a skill and takes patience to develop that skill level in the game... but once you get the hang of it it's a breeze... and you can end up with multiple extra ships, you clear the board faster, and can play for hours if you feel like it. Again, if you have multiple extra ships then losing one of them in one of the levels isn't a big deal. The key is ONLY allowing the capture after all or most of the normal enemies have been killed, then shooting the captured ship last so it sets you in the middle of the screen for the Challenging Stage. Double ships are really best for only Challenging stages... much safer too. Hey... whatever floats your boat, my friend. Just letting you in on another way to play the game and racking up MAJOR points much faster. Cheers!

I remember finding the secret to disarming the bugs, then completed all 255 sheets, even completing every 7th challenge stage with the perfect 40 hits. I 'clocked' the machine 3 times and got another 250-300K points on top, but only got the high score of that, not the 999,990 that was on the high score. That was claimed by the next player, usually me by losing all three craft for zero. I hated finding out that the glitch on various other platforms was not included. Did play on one machine that blacked out and said 'this pilot is too good for me', that was at about 250K points.

I've heard people pronounce the name with the emphasis on the second sylabol. "guh-LAG-uh." I've also seen in my life a bootleg cabinet where the name is "GALAG." I've also seen "PAC-GAL" (Ms.Pac-man) and "FROG" (Frogger) I've always wondered if the arcade owners knowingly purchased the bootlegs because they played exactly like the the legit games and they were cheaper, or were sold the bootlegs at the price of a legit cabinet.
