Saxophone repairman extraodinaire Matt Stohrer of Stohrermusic.com is getting a tiny bit better at close-ups but really still doesn't have it totally together in this latest installment of the Repairman's Overview series. In this video, Matt mostly gets right to the heart of the matter about the 1978-1990 "Purple Logo" Yamaha 62 straight soprano saxophone, even going into his parts drawers to pull out some pads and pivot screws to illustrate some points. Woohoo!

Funny you'd ask that today- I have just repadded a YSS-61 and have it sitting on the bench here in front of me. The bore seems to be extremely similar or the same as the 62, with slightly more antiquated keywork design, headless pivot screws, donut style C#, and no front F. Build quality is decent, but not nearly as good as the 62 series. Body seems to be of slightly thinner or maybe softer metal than the 62. A good horn, but probably worth the extra scratch to get a 62 if you are in the market.

i have had zero problems with my yamaha. Its a custom ex, so its a newer model, but I am hands down a firm believer in yamaha horns. They are the best ive played, and that includes selmer, and yani

I received my "NOS" mint, like new YSS 62 today. The repairman at the store sealed a couple of minor leaks and its 25+ (or so..) pads seal and pop just like in your other video. It appears to have the original settings, though, with felt under cork on those adjustment screws. I take it they will need replacing soon? Thanks.

Ive got a YSS61 that I bought new in high school around 77. In a nutshell, what are differences between the 62 and the 61? I see certain cosmetic things like a plastic thumbrest and less mop key touches on the alternate F# and high F#. In terms of bore etc., what are the differences?

Is YSS-62 still sought after? Or did jazz musician switched to the newer YSS-82Z ?

Seems to be! The 82z and 82zr are typically more expensive in addition to being a slightly different horn, so they are not really interchangeable to people who want a vintage 62.
