Great demonstration for hanging a ceiling light fixture with a chain - just what I was looking for. A second pair of hands to assist with the previous fixture as well as replacement fixture is highly recommended.

Thank you for your video. Your video is the only one that showed how to connect a ground wire to the green screw on the mounting plate/crossbar. My other option was to make a pigtail connection using a green wire nut but I didn't have any and the home improvement stores only sell them in bunches of 25 or 100. I mounted my new chandelier but it didn't work. I thought I made a mistake with the wires but I didn't. The instructions did say to ground the chandelier to the crossbar but I didn't know how to do it. Once again thanks a million for your video.

I used to sell lighting fixtures and have hung both fans and fixtures.. the crossbar gets installed as the last step... before connecting the wires. threaded tubes at times need to be adjusted so the canopy fits snug. good video. I always hated the fixture assembly process... sometimes the sockets would break and the fixture would have to be repaired...what a pain that was... or the fixture had broken glass... because I worked in a hardware store where parts were sold, I was able to just grab something off the shelve to complete the display. you should have added a ground pigtail to the box due to the short ground wire. also, always leave plenty of slack in the wire... in the event of changes... (having to rewire an entire fixture is a pain!)

Wonderful and helpful video! Love that you shared how to tell which wire is neutral with lamp cord that is not white and black/red. My question is this: I'm powering light fixtures that are intended to be mounted into ceiling junction boxes with swag lamp kits. The fixture has a ground wire, but the lamp cord that I'm plugging into a wall outlet (serving as my power source) does not have a ground wire. What do I do with the fixture's ground wire? Should I still attach it to the ground screw in my metal mounting hardware? (I'm using the fixture's mounting bar and canopy rather than just a ceiling hook). Or should I just leave it unconnected to anything, since it's not connected to the power source in any way? Or is there some other solution I haven't thought of?

I've been up all night trying to find a decent close up view of this procedure, and finally after all-night search I found you, I don't know how you did it, but the close up was marvelous, I saw what I needed to see, finally. It was the ground wires and that green screw and how they came together, as you said you lucked out! but I have a light that has a ground wire, no green screw and it isn't copper- I've never seen anything like this as all my other lights have the copper ground wire, I wonder if this light is going to be safe seeing it has this thin silver ground wire? It's a LED light so not much current will be required to light it up, I guess so they thought they wouldn't use the heavy copper wire, I guess, I don't know what to think or do.

Yes, whatever works is good! The main thing is that "tug test". Ensure that the wires are all securely bound together in the wire connector. A electrical splice must be as mechanically and electrically sound as the original conductor. (a dredged up memory from tech school!)

1) Leave the screws on the bar a bit loose while pulling the fixture wires - they go through much easier with pancake boxes. Finish tightening the screws once the wires are completely pulled. 2) Is there any reason why you didn't just use lengths of the braided fixture wire to make up a pigtail? You would then have some slack on the supply ground wire to go the the wire nut. Also from the wire nut would be a braided length to the pancake box, a braided length to the mounting bar and the braided wire of the fixture itself. So the wire nut would connect 3 braided wire lengths plus the green supply wire. 3) I was taught to always wrap all wire nuts with electrical tape. Is that still standard practice?

This is incredibly helpful and so well done! My old light fixture has a thick copper ground wire but there's no grounding nut in the box like yours has. It's just free in there. The new light fixture has the crossbar with the green grounding nut. After I wrap it 180 around the grounding nut, what should I do next? Should I still wrap it around the copper ground wire coming from the box? The directions specifically say this: "E" wire from the fixture is attached to the mounting bracket (this part I know) and an additional "E" wire from the mounting bracket must be secured to the junction box. I'm assuming by "additional" it means the additional length of it like you showed in the video. But since there's not a specific screw to attach it, and the copper wire wasn't attached to anything when I removed it, I didn't know what to do with it. The junction box has 4 screws attaching it inside the ceiling. Should I loosen one and use that? Why wasn't the copper ground wire already on a screw? Also, the neutral wires coming from the box are 2 thick copper wires wrapped together. The live wire is just one thick copper wire.

Is it a metal or plastic box? If it's metal, and there is no grounding screw, then the best you can do use one of those mounting screws, If they are wood screws with a beveled head, change it to a screw of the same size with a pan head to bet a better connection. If it's plastic, then just wrap your fixture wire around the mounting bar terminal, and if it's long enough, then connect to the ground wire in the box with a wire nut as well.
@aglastad
@aglastad 3 жыл бұрын
@@theinternetelectrician Got it! It's metal and there's no grounding screw, so I can do like you suggest and use one of the mounting screws. My first thought had been to connect the fixture wire to the green screw then take the end of it and connect it straight to the copper wire coming from the ceiling with a wire nut, as opposed to connecting the copper wire to one of the mounting screws first, then connecting the two ends (copper wire and fixture wire) with a wire nut, as you did in this video. It still creates a continuous route for the ground. Why does the ceiling copper wire also need to be connected to metal? I'm asking this for my education. :-) Doing some minor upgrades with lighting, and each one seems to be unique.
@theinternetelectrician

@@aglastad The goal is to have all metal parts in the system connected to the grounding (earthing) system. So if a hot conductor accidentally comes in contact with any metal parts, the fault current will be taken safely to earth, and in a high enough amount of current to trip the breaker and open the circuit. With little resistance, high current will flow in a very short time to facilitate the tripping of the breaker so the better.

Why does the grounding wire from the fixture get attached/spliced withbthe grounding wirr from the incoming wires from the ceiling? Is the grounding screw on the cross bar assembly not enough to be grounded? Thanks.
@theinternetelectrician

The goal is to have a continuous copper path using the grounding conductors. If you just relied upon the mounting bar, the path is broken if the screws are removed.

@theinternetelectrician
@theinternetelectrician 3 жыл бұрын
If I'm understanding you correctly, you have white wires spliced together, black wires spliced together, and one single red? If I have that right, then you connect your fixture white in with white wires, and the fixtures black wire to the red wire. Leave the black wires as they were. I would appreciate it if you like, subscribe, and click the bell as well (if you already did, thanks!) It really helps us creators gain traction with KZbin.
