Having this exact issue with a 96 F150 XLT. So heartening to see documentation of the issue and its fix, rather than being lost to 10 year old forums. I noticed in my case, things kindof work if I shift the switch a bit back and forth, but not reliably and it still kills the engine, so I'll update it this works. Thanks!

I have a 95 Bronco that has a similar problem. The truck would stop running at the most importuned times. On highway etc. I followed the same diagnosis as you did. Fuel Filter, Distributor, Key Ignition etc. I would giggle the key or shut truck off for a while. Then it would start. Thank You so very much for your video! One more item to replace. That I am not sure of, maybe one of the guys on a diesel forum would know?
@tcreech5929 жыл бұрын
everything is the same on the body of f250 gas and diesel. only thing that changes are suspension components and motors. rest of body is virtually identical. and yes it has a rod going down from the cylinder lock to ignition switch. has two bolts that hold it onto the column. be careful not to over tighten the bolts because you can break the studs and then you better know how to weld or have 7-900$ for new column. you will need to get steering wheel puller. cheap at harbor freight

I was wondering if you were able to notice what was wrong with the ignition switch you pulled out. Loose - broken plastic - something like that. I would be curious to know what the issue was with the bad one. I have this problem - only intermittently on my Ford Explorer. Crank with no start. I considered doing this just to eliminate this as a possible fault. If I take the old one out - I can look for what went wrong - to at least try to verify I am eliminating my intermittent problem. Thanks!
@JPK929 жыл бұрын
+William Whitt I did not notice anything wrong with mine personally. I have read that there are ways to tell such as when you turn the key to the second click the instrument panel wont light up. Another way to see if it's bad is to see if the switch is over heating or in some cases may even have burn marks on it. I would also check the pin to see if it is loose or anything looks out of the ordinary. I replaced mine because it was not starting and I was trying to eliminate the problem starting with the cheapest options. I also figured that the truck is old enough now that I might as well just replace it. Can anyone else shed some light on this?
@briangill62196 жыл бұрын
It’s just the contact point (right under the pin that slides back and forth) getting old/ dirty/ worn. The part is too cheap to justify trying to fix it, but if you split the old one apart after you remove it, you’ll be able to understand how it works and see the worn out contacts
@kurtmaier91343 жыл бұрын
Oh wait maybe it's a good idea to finish watching the video before you comment by that I mean me but I was just wondering if he had covered all of those bases before getting to this point and it would only make sense but I just wanted to mention the common issues that I knew right off the top of my head but now I will also and this ignition switch possibility when diagnosing crank no start situations on older mid and full size Ford trucks

Can this ignition switch cause hard starts after warm-up. I've been having issues with hard starts after warm-up and have thrown the parts cannon at it.
@briangill62196 жыл бұрын
Paul Sosa yes it can. It can also be intermittent. IE: Starts fine in the morning, then gives you trouble later in the day, then goes away again.
@billrobertson15076 жыл бұрын
Brian Gill hard starts after warm-ups can also be filled coils in the starter
@briangill62196 жыл бұрын
bill robertson very true, but one of the more expensive options. Check your grounds as well. Detach them, clean them, and reseat them. At both ends. I had and old Dodge that used to completely die on me and then refuse to do anything for at least twenty minutes when it was hot out. All connections looked fine, but when we finally disconnected the ground cable from the engine block, there was almost nothing left of it at the terminal end under the outer sheathing.

Mine has the same problem. I will replace it. But until then I found out if you turn the key and release it. Do not wait for the engine to fire. After you release the key it will start while the engine starter momentum rolls the engine just a bit. This advise would be if you are on the road somewhere and your Ford doesn't want to fire up. Thanks for showing us how easy it is to change out and thanks for giving the size wrenches. I was very hesitant to start doing this switch replacement until I seen you do it Thanks.

My wife's 03 crown vic with only 32,000 she would complain her car cranked but wouldn't start. Thought that was odd till one day she couldn't get it to start so I went out and tried and it would crank just fine but like she said no start. I decided that since it was 11 yrs old and the original battery, I'd put a new battery in first then diagnosis it. Installed new battery and it cranked fine and started up right away. Solved the problem. Then my 03 Town car did the same so put a new battery in and solved it. Now my boat is doing the same but if I do like you say let up on the key quickly it starts every time. Battery is old and needs replacing. It seems to me that the ignition and fuel injection need higher voltage than what the starter needs to operate, as soon as you let the key off quickly the ign. fuel injection gets that spike of higher voltage it needs to run on. In all my cars in the past I usually changed the battery at 5 yrs old but we drive so little now and short trips to town I now let them go till they go dead, but found out that doesn't work with these new cars. All my FI Ford products seem to have this same issue, needs a good battery.
