Did you need to remove that entire plastic enclosure wouldn't it be easier just to remove speaker while still in door??

unfortunately you picked the wrong type of speaker for the sealed small enclosure you've put it in. I have a bmw e38 and it came with some nice quality Nokia speakers from the factory, I still use them but I gave them a lot more juice trough an amplifier and cut off any low end frequencies and the bass is handled by a dedicated subwoofer and other speakers. The e39 I believe has some rear deck speakers where you can mount woofers that will use the trunk as enclosure - which is great because the can produce awesome low frequencies. You should definitely take some vibro-dampening material and apply it to these boxes you are using - it will drastically cut vibrations as it will be a much harder surface, but nothing that you do will give you any bass because it is a very small sealed enclosure.

They go down to about 60Hz, the rear deck speakers are in plastic enclosures like these too but they're more box shaped and boomy. I plan to high pass them at 80Hz and cover the boxes in the foil backed Dynamat type stuff next time I take the door cards out as I need to install new trim clips. I would agree the enclosure is pretty small but you work with what you've got and the Nokias were distorting at medium/high volumes. These provide a lot more mid bass and do extend lower than the Nokias even on the stock amp. You have given me an idea though... What if I put these woofers in the rear deck... Hmm. Thanks for your comment. In addition, I have a subwoofer that will be going in eventually.

Oh and another thing you may be interested in, I upgraded to some BMW Harman/Kardon tweeters from a 2012 Mini as they were like £25 a pair. 1" aluminium dome. Super crisp.

They are Monacor CarPower CRB-130PS, really nice build. 4 ohms, 60-5000Hz response, 30w RMS. Sadly I can't really make a judgement on them in the car as the stock head unit can't give them enough power but they sound clearer than the stock ones.
