Yes! Thanks for this video! I have never worked on torsion bars before. My nervousness made it out to be much worse than it actually was. I left keys in place, and left axle in place. Great video, Always good to see someone do the work instead of setting up the scene. I have a 6 liter 4x4 version so no heater in the way. Used a 3/4 round brass punch and a good sledge hammer. One tip I found will make it easier. Before you begin, Use penetrating oil inside and outside on both ends. Let this sit for an hour or two, Then knock the rods out. make sure the suspension is fully dropped first as well.

Tip from the rusty north. Save your old torsion bar for down the road and grind a bit off the key end so you can use it to beat on the A arm portion to loosen it if you work on multiple similar vehicles .

Lower truck onto a jack stand (or use floor jack) placed under control arm to simulate truck weight and then tighten the control arm bushings, gives you a little more room then when the wheel is on and it's on the ground.

Well done gentlemen, I have a '93 silverado and I bought ball joints some time back because my truck leans way down on the drivers side. I won't sell it because these joints are really worn, could come apart and I sure don't want that to happen to the new buyer while driving my old truck, liability perhaps, sure don't want that. Now I can do it myself safely, unload the bars, yeah! The trick was searching for torsion bars first, Not ball joints, lots of goofy mechanics replacing joint and not unloading bars, wow! Ball joints locally installed about $1200.

@SuperRasean Жыл бұрын
@@justinbrown6535 I know this is an old post but incase someone else wants to know what you do is loosen up the ball joint bolt to the knuckle leaving the nut on a few threads and knock that joint lose, then do the same thing to the two bolts on the lower control arm again leaving the nuts on a couple threads to have the entire control arm lose. Now you just loosen up the bolt from the torsion bar (don't remove it all the way) this will remove the "twisting" pressure being applied to the control arm and everything should start to feel lose. Now remove the nut from the ball joint and pull the lower arm out of the knuckle. Finally you take the two bolts out of the lower arm you might need a jack to remove some pressure from the back bolt on the control arm closest to the torsion bar slot, but once you have both bolts out you should be able to just pull down on the lower arm and slide it off the torsion bar..... If you live in a road salt state you'll probably need the unloading tool, prybar, and hammer

But somehow I replaced my entire suspension on my two thousand two z seventy one without removing the torsion bar.. I took all the tension off of it, but somehow dropped the lower control arm and slipped it out, and then reinstalled it.. I do recall it being difficult and a little dicey, but I made it work. @@NaztyNate It might be worth mentioning,that in my case, (2001 Chevy Silverado ,1500, 4WD) I was able to pull the A arm off the torsion bar without having to mess with the keys. I'm sure that is not always the case. They could've been loose already, who knows. It is worth mentioning that it is by FAR better to buy the A arms ready to go. I tried for several days to press in bushings and ball joints with little success (with a borrowed shop set) Huge time saver and the cost is negligible compared to the time saved. Plus the frustration and aggravation of trying to remove the old ones, only to discover that they were pitted and needed replacing anyway. AAAAAgarrrrrrrr!!!! I keep coming across this. The idea that tightening down a bolt that holds a bushing, before lowering the vehicle and putting weight on the suspension, tears the bushing…. Makes 0 logical sense to me. Think about it, while you’re driving your suspension bounces up and down which in turn rotates on that axis of the LCA bushing you were talking about. How in the world is that any different than what you’re doing when lowering the vehicle if it’s already tightened???! I could definitely be wrong but I’m trying to use simple logic here. Seems to me, there’s a blatant fallacy in this concept.
@68M35A2 Жыл бұрын
Because you want it at 0 tension’s when at ride height. Of course it moves up and down, but it doesn’t stay there. If you start out at tension and then add more tension in the same direction……too much tension.

Seems like some grease on bushings shouldn't hurt. then when it all twists freer! I do wonder about all the torsion on a shock tho. Maybe I shouldn't
@ultimatemotorsportsracing7 ай бұрын
You want the bushing to be at its zero rotational stress position at ride height. So torque the bolt when the vehicle is weight bearing on the tires as it sits for 90% of it's life.

It’s such a annoying stupid thing the torsion bars plus you get rougher front end ride. Leaf springs in rear, STRUTS COIL SPRINGS AND SHOCKS in the front. Usually on bigger trucks the smaller have the stupid torsion bars. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️

@@NaztyNate 2500s and 3500s?? I have mainly seen struts on those, you mean on the GMs? Huh. If truck has nice shocks hood suspension and is stock height it wouldn’t ride rough cause you’d get more bounce than when it’s raised up with torsion bars you get a more stiffer ride. My 2003 1500 ram has torsion bars it’s got 4 inch lift in front of rides a little rough plus leaf springs in the rear no struts. Just shocks both ends.
