Fantastic job replacing the inner tube basket in this Kenmore 90 series washing machine

You should have changed the tub seal. The shaft that the tub seal fits on - looks very corroded at the seal area. Mine was leaking slowly at this location. Also, when hammering on the spanned wrench, you want to go counter-clockwise to remove that big nut. Then put the nut back on upside down about 6 threads, the use a 3-prong gear puller gripping the bottom edges of the nut to remove the drive block.

Thank you for posting this DIY. I have a similar vintage Whirlpool which was leaving lint and residue. I had planned to tear down, clean the tubs and reassemble. Mine was stored in a dry room but is absolutely filled with caked on residue from fabric softener and stuff being left in p pockets etc Ive stalled as i can't get inner tub out. It looks like corrosion on the span but and drive block, lots of gunk and these have fused to the brake tube. I got the nut out with very heavy hammer force but tub is stuck. The tub is quite expensive and is a special order part so im debating if i try to do what you did and use an oscillating tool to cut or i may pull the whole transmission and motor out from bottom and try to pry brake tube out from bottom. Id need tube AND tub then, but maybe less headache. But at that price i need to think about just getting a new machine. I've sprayed penetrating oil into that tube and on block for a few days now and not showing any signs of budging. Thanks for the video. Real world conditions. 90% of the vids make it look like this tub just pops up with a bit of wiggling.

Even if you have to spend $300 on a new tub, it's worth fixing one of these old machines versus the new HE junk sold at Lowe's and HD.
@Lazerbeam323ci5 ай бұрын
@@CubeComputerChannel Thank you. That's what I'm thinking too but if I need anything else it starts to add up quick. I just priced the brake and tub and it's like 500 C$ assuming nothing else damaged.

@@Lazerbeam323ci Try to order parts from Amazon... sites like RepairClinic mark up parts big time. I paid less than $300 USD for the tub in mine. Have you used cleaners like Affresh? There's another product I've seen on Amazon like Affresh for cleaning residue out of machines like this. I believe there are a few other methods on getting the lock nut to free from the tub. I used the hacksaw route since the tub in mine was already done for and why I was in there to begin with.

Can you please tell me the PART NUMBER? It's not available on Amazon anymore .I love my KENMORE 90!❤❤❤

I wanna replace my tub basket also. I replaced a bunch of parts on my machine and I don't care what it costs, this machine is so worth saving! The new ones are GARBAGE! And, I'm A GIRL!! Roll up my sleeves and get 'er done!😂

THESES KIND OF WASHERS MAINTENANCE IS DONE ABOUT 2 OR 3 YEARS. SO THE BASKET DOESN'T ROT .
@CubeComputerChannel3 ай бұрын
The description clearly says why the basket in this machine rotted.

When the inner tube is filled with water, the outer tub is also filled proportionally correct? The exposed rust on the tub support (~4in of the black cylinder from the bottom center of the outer tub) is mixing with the water during the cycle. Can you please confirm before I replace this part (Kenmore 110.24872300 Washer Tub Support/Brake Genuine OEM).
@CubeComputerChannel11 ай бұрын
Yes, when the inner basket is filled, the outer tub is filled to the same level.
@cliffhicks956211 ай бұрын
@@CubeComputerChannel thanks for the confirmation and prompt response. Is there a reason that you did not replace/clean yours? Is that area sealed off from the main water cycling through the clothes?
@CubeComputerChannel11 ай бұрын
@@cliffhicks9562 I cleaned the outer tub. It wasn't perfect, but it was better than before. To replace the brake, I don't think you have to remove the tub, though I could be wrong. You can remove the motor and transmission from the bottom to access the brake that way.

You forgot the 8in plastic round lint screen that goes in bottom of Inner Tub...
@scow012 ай бұрын
Do you have any idea what part# that piece is? I cannot find a replacement for it and almost wonder if it's unnecessary. Three of the tabs on mine snapped off when trying to pry it loose from the rust. Was attempting to clean it out since it was nasty. Buying a new inner tub after discovering all the rust that was between that plastic piece and inner tub.

My bottom agitator doesn't have a bolt. Just a hard plastic platform - any ideas? 😊

What's the model of your machine? There were several different agitators used on these machines.

I am baffled as to why you didn’t thoroughly clean the outer plastic tub when you had everything apart? I still saw visible gunk once the new wash basket was installed
@CubeComputerChannel Жыл бұрын
I was not able to get every single thing off. It's a night and day difference from what it was.

@@CubeComputerChannel An SOS pad works wonders on these. I have seen a lot of the gunk wipe off after spraying some all purpose cleaner on it. Rinsing in hot water is key. Sure you could have done better than that. But hey it's your machine.

@@MatthewJames-st5wv Yeah I wasn't trying to make it showroom perfect... the key thing is it doesn't smell anymore.

Of course, someone who has tons of experience is going to tell you.... YOI FORGOT THE FILTER SCREEN THAT GOES INTO BOTTOM OF INNER TUB/BASKET!!!! THEY DONT COME WITH A NEW TUB.... ITS AN 8IN ROUND PLASTIC SCREEN THAT GOES IN BOTTOM OF TUB....

The directions clearly state to add liquid bleach first . You never figured it out that the bleach dispenser you have guides the liquid bleach to enter the tub "BETWEEN" the porcelain basket and the outer plastic tub. Thus never going directly on the clothes but to the bottom to be then mixed with the water you add. The ring works for "TWO" different methods of dispensing liquid bleach....one with a hose and the one you have. I have the same type of dispenser only I have a whirlpool washer 😀😀😀
@CubeComputerChannel3 ай бұрын
Mine does not say to add liquid bleach first. Mine actually says to "add liquid chlorine bleach to the dispenser, 5 minutes after the wash cycle starts for the best wash performance"
@tomtransport3 ай бұрын
@@CubeComputerChannel The point I was making is that the "slot" in the bleach dispenser we both have, when installed to the plastic outer tub, will direct the bleach "between" the steel porcelain "inner tub" and the plastic "outer tub" thus never putting the bleach directly on the clothes. BTW, the same thing happened to my whirlpool washer, the tube rusted through under the agitator. I used a hand drill with a cutting disk to cut through the tube at the slot of the threaded keeper. I found the basket/part for $152.50 and $10.99 shipping + tax at Parts DR.😀😀😀

Fabric softener ruins machines
@CubeComputerChannel Жыл бұрын
Lemme guess... it ruins the precious HE sensors this old machine does not use?
@@gvi341984 While this may be true, the reason why this machine had rust in the tub was due to the conditions this machine was exposed to for 10 years or so of sitting inside an old mobile home as the walls and roof had begun to fail. I suspect water had sat inside the tub for an extended period of time. There are videos out there of old machines like Whirlpool direct drives from the mid 1980s and GE FilterFlo machines of even older vintage still going. Whirlpool direct drives use a plastic outer tub, as seen in the video.
