On December 18, 2015 we bought 5 olives trees that were over 100 yrs old. The trees were from Fresno and we had them transferred to our place. In this video you will see how much work it was to replant them. Well the trees are growing well and beautiful. This year we have soooo many olives!

Here I'm getting ready to have a 10 year old olive that's about 8 inches at the trunk base and 10 feet tall. I'm in San Diego about 10 miles inland. I was worried that it would fail. Not anymore.

That is great Jon! They are really tough trees and can even look like they are dead and come back. The trick is to get the right balance of watering. Not too much and not too little. We started ours by giving it a lot of water when planted and then we watered (drip irrigation) for 2 hrs once every 7 days. This was the recommendation from the seller. Let us know how the tree is doing for you.

@Keith and Wi Adventures Can you tell me the rate on drip and the type of drip you used? Gallons/hour?

@@jonscrivner9087 Hi Jon, We used the standard 5/8" drip tubing from Home Depot. I believe the drippers (that are built into the tubing) emit are spaced about 2 ft apart and put out a gallon per hours. If you look at the standard tubing from Home depot you will be fine. But not the 1.4" drip tubing the bigger one. Hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing. Where did you find a seller that had specimens like that? Having bought nearly a dozen olive trees for my home I am yet to find a source for such mature examples that doesn't want several thousand dollars per tree.

Amazing story and video. Thank you Keith! Can you please tell me why they cut the small branches? They look absolutely fantastic in the final photo with the green leaves. How long did it takes to get so beautiful? Thank you Keith!

Hi There Be Fabulous! You ask some great questions. The same year we planted the trees they began to sprout new branches. The picture at the end of the video that you saw was about 2 years after the tree were planted. It is now about 5 years after they were planted. We are focusing on reducing the number of branches so that select branches can grow bigger, basically extending the existing big branches which were trimmed when the tree was taken out of the ground. This will makes the trees look more natural and have a bigger canopy. I will try to answer your first questions above.... The original trees had a 25 or 30 foot canopy. For Transportation they have to trim the tree down to a size that will allow the trees to be easily transported. Trimming also helps the tree survive since the root system is greatly reduced when it is cut out of the ground. Less canopy is easier for the tree to feed with a reduced root system. Please let me know if I answered your questions. Cheers!

Hi Fabulous! They trimmed so significantly mainly for transportation. The wind on the back of a flat bed would really make is difficult to transport. It took about two years to get to what the video shows. Really fast!

Hi Ace of Spades! I am sorry but I did not see your post until now. These trees were out of the ground about 4 days. The more I work with these trees the more I am impressed how tough they are. Once in the ground just make sure they have water. I water them now for two hours, once every 7 days.

Love the video and the trees, I live in Bella Visra Ca and bought some olive trees to transport to our property. Having operated heavy equipment for many years I’m sure I can do this myself but not sure about the timing after trimming the trees can I dig them up and transport them ? Do you know? I’d be sick if I killed the trees

Hi Conrad, These tree are amazingly tough! I was very surprised that they could be trimmed so significantly and then using a ditch witch, dug out of the ground. The workers that dug up the trees in 8x8x2 foot root clusters, wrapped the roots and put them on a flatbed simi-truck. You can see we placed them in the ground and kept them watered. They grow really well. I just harvest a bunch of olives off them.

Hi there Andrew! The crazy Italian that sold me the olive trees so they were about 100 to 130 years old. Not sure if they're exact age but since they came from Fresno they could be slightly older than that. Really appreciate you watching and hoped you enjoyed the video!
