I am 56, grew up in Tulsa, went to one of the "best" public schools in OK, studied OK history and learned a lot about the college football team (which I loved). I did not learn about the race massacre that happened in my hometown until I watched HBO's Watchmen a few years ago. When I asked my dad, who has lived in OK his entire life, about it, he said "we shouldn't talk about something that happened so long ago." He is a white evangelical Christian, and so I asked him "Why is it okay to talk about something that supposedly happened over 2,000 years ago on the other side of the planet, but not something that happened 100 years ago in this same town?" He became furious and started screaming about liberals murdering newly born children.

You cannot say that you believe that no individual racial, ethnic or cultural group are superior when you NOT ONLY greatly benefit from being at the intersection of multiple identities of historic and cultural power and privilege, but you are ALSO using that position to legally silence ALL speech which challenges your inherited power and privilege. And don't kid yourself into thinking this is "only about kids". Everybody's personality, beliefs and views of the world is pretty much formulated in their childhood. Blocking even the slightest discussion of racial and ethnic inequality in American society and how and why that happens is ALL ABOUT indoctrinating the views of future adults.

Sam hit the nail on the head when he pretends to react to the white man not being front and center in everything. This is the crux of racism in that the 'other' does not share my hopes and dreams and therefore must be crushed. 'Their' hopes and dreams are different and therefore inferior; thus they are inferior. There is an old saw that if you put all the years of the last two thousand years of human history on a wheel and gave it a spin, no matter the year it landed on, white men would always be safe and privileged. Just like people believe that only OTHER countries and regions have accents (because their own accent is everywhere around them), people tend to believe that everything that they fundamentally believe and value and instinctually perform every single day (usually without being aware) is "non-political". It's like when people complain that vegetarians and vegans "push their politics all the time", even though EVERY SINGLE image and statement that promotes or normalises the cultural position of eating meat is ALSO pushing politics. What they mean by critical race theory is just the teaching of the history of racism and slavery in the US, something that had been taught in the US for decades and decades with no controversy, until right-wing strategists in recent years decided to figure out a way to stop the teaching of it. In Texas schools back in the seventies and early eighties when I was in school, we were taught about the history of slavery, the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, all that, with no controversy whatsoever. These days, it would be illegal to teach basic history like that in many states, including apparently Oklahoma. But back in the seventies, there was no nation-wide unregulated right-wing media causing whites to regress the way there is today.
