"All that the rain promises, and more" by David Aurora. I's great for helping folks to joyfully connect with mushrooms, even without consuming them. And the keys inside the front and back covers are helpful for beginners to sort out what general category of mushroom they might have. Good regional books are really worth having, too.

This is the one I was going to mention. Same Author as Mushrooms Demystified referenced frequently as abbreviated form MD in All that the rain promises and more. This smaller companion book is a field guide which narrows the scope to primarily mushrooms which are either edible or poisonous, or particularly common or interesting and focuses on mushrooms which grow in areas of the west coast of the USA. It is filled with entertaining stories from mushroom hunters, a few recipes and detailed information on where and when you can forage for edible mushrooms. While you won't find every mushroom you come across listed here, as it largely ignores inedible mushrooms, you will find pictures and detailed identification material for all edible mushrooms that grow in western US states. Also anything that will kill you or make you very sick, because that's necessary information when mushroom hunting.

My personal favorite is Radical Mycology. I find Peter McCoy's writing style to be extremely engaging. I was interested in Mushrooms, McCoy's work made me fall in love with Fungi. He gives confidence to the reader, to really engage the subject on an every day level & his use of permacultural design princples gives the reader's the tools they need to do so.

Totally agree, plus the scope of Radical Mycology is immense, ranging from the logistics of at-home cultivation to philosophy and alchemy. It took me probably a year to get through it, cover to cover, but I’m looking forward to doing it again with a few years of growing under my belt. I constantly reference it when I’m setting up new mushroom projects.

Mushroom books are very important. Books that have dichotomous keys are essential especially for advanced mushroom hunting. But we can also find many keys online if we look for it carefully. Anyway thanks for all those books review, some of them I didn't know and they look precious.

An excellent reference work for IDing wild mushrooms is Roger Phillips' Mushrooms and Other Fungi of North America. Also, it's very useful to have field guides that are specific to your region. I'm in Ontario, so a couple that I like are Timothy Baroni's Mushrooms of Northeastern United States and Eastern Canada, and George Barron's Mushrooms of Ontario and Eastern Canada. Wherever you are, find a good guide for your region.

Mushrooms of West Virginia and the Central Appalachians is probably one of the better field guides out there, especially for the eastern US. It’s very easy to identify your finds. But he barely makes a dent in the diversity of fungi here in our state. Every time I go out I find varieties not listed or mentioned in his book but with thousands of variations out there you would need several volumes.

I have this book and it's a massive disappointment. Missing a lot of mushrooms for the area it's suppose to cover and his explanations on edibility are all over the place. Also he labeled Psilocybe thrausta as poisonous when in reality it is edible just not very palatable. It's also not psychoactive. Labeling it as Edible and Non-psychoactive would have been helpful. Makes me question his ability to correctly identify edibility on others. In an identification guide I would like to know uniform, concise (and accurate) information. Would not recommend. Mediocre at best.

I’ve looks at that book, but have hesitated as I am a very visual person and it seems that it’s in black and white and also written back in 1993 or something like that. I wasn’t sure if there were better techniques and such now and if that book was outdated.

Serval of your picks are on my top 10 list too. One that doesn't quite fit into your categories that I really enjoyed is Mr. Bloomfield's Orchard: The Mysterious World of Mushrooms, Molds, and Mycologists by Nicholas P. Money. He has a quirky sense of humor and his writing style makes for a fun read. It covers all different aspects of the fungal world and the people within it with tales from history and his personal experiences.

hey there! we got that as a gift, I am honestly not sure where you can buy one online... best bet would be to try and connect with some Traditional Chinese Medicine shops in your local area if you have. I know one other person who got one like that, from a TCM shop in Vancouver Canada.
