While we were visiting New England, we visited three separate Savers. The first Savers was a total disappointment. (Link below.) The second two Savers in this video were not as terrible, but Savers still holds special rank as my least favorite thrift store.

Next time you are in New England, you may want to go to Goodwill Buy the Pound store. In Hudson, NH there is one and you literally pay by the pound. I bought a big Keurig for $1.99 and it worked. Glass, ceramics, crystal are 20 cents a lb. General stuff is $1.39 per lb. There is alot of interesting items. Thanks for your videos, they are great and I am binge watching!! Learning alot.

I went to GW this weekend and the crowds were intense, the pickings few, and not worth the headache. It looked like there had been a riot in the store with stuff thrown all over the place. The toy aisle was completely destroyed with most of the shelf contents on the floor. You should have seen this one woman, (well actually I'm glad you didn't), literally screaming at her kids, and chasing them up and down the aisle's. It was insane! You have the nicest kids girlfriend, and you can be proud, for you have taught them well. These kids were screaming and yelling, pulling things from shelves, and slamming repeatedly onto the keys of a piano in the furniture aisle. It was pure bedlam! For a nickle I would have left, but my hubby dropped me off, and had gone further in town to Home Depot, to do his shopping, so I was stuck. ARGH! ha ha ha Good thing I have a sense of humor. I have learned my lesson tho, from now on I'll go during the week when everyone is at work and the shelves haven't been picked over so much or destroyed. I still managed to get a few nice things, so didn't get completely skunked. I felt really bad for the hard working crew at GW, they are really nice folks, and I wished people would treat the places they shop in better, and the folks that work there nicer. Great to see you managed to find a few good things for all of your efforts. Sometimes it feels like Mortal Combat doesn't it?! ha ha ha Glad you got back home safe and able to hunt another day. I am still recovering. ha ha ha

Savers picking on a Monday is usually not a good day. So-o-o picked over on the weekend. MA thrifts so picked clean by resellers anyway. Like I said on another video of yours, thrifting in lower New England is for the very hardy! PA is still one of the best pickin spots around!

Savers are so hit or miss - the Framingham location is a gold mine for vintage clothes and textiles. If you ever make it back to MA, be sure to visit Urban Renewal thrift in Allston or the giant goodwill outlet in Boston.

White with black is hard to come by. I nab every piece I find because a lot of people have white and black kitchens with open shelves. I also collect Pyrex with black designs for myself and that dish is great for making small amounts of baked ziti or stuffed shells OR warming up two different items in the microwave. Here in MI you can't give away bells they just don't sell.

So I'm really wanting to get into picking. I have always had a love for vintage and I seem to have a really good eye for it too. I'll go to goodwill, find things that I'm pretty sure are worth money, but then I get discouraged because I don't want to be wasting my money. Anyways, I was wondering if there are any books or websites that can help me know what to look for when picking. I'm sure I'm going to get answers like, "oh, it's just collective knowledge and just kinda learning as you go." The thing is that, I don't know anyone else who picks and there aren't too many antique store where I live. These videos are really helpful, but I don't have such and extensive knowledge of these things, so really all I can gather is uh beware of modern rose medallion, no milk glass unless you know your stuff, and carnival glass is pretty but not worth it. Is there anything that can give me like a jump start into picking and reselling? Maybe just focusing on one thing until I pick up some more knowledge?

If you have a smartphone, Install the eBay app, pick a few things you think might sell and check the comparable "sold" items via eBay. That will get you in the ballpark on prices. Like anything else, practice makes perfect, knowledge is power. And don't be afraid to lose a few dollars, this method is a cheap education.

How can you dislike a 20% off coupon for Savers that you get when donating a bag or box of stuff, or their club card day when stuff can be 50% off for card holders or their senior day when everything in 30% off (bring an older relative or friend and let them go through the check-out for you)? Sure, a lot of their stuff is over-priced for secondhand goods, but with the coupons or other discounts, those prices can be reduced to a reasonable level. I recently bought a 20" brown bead necklace they thought was plastic ($4.99 + a 20% discount) that tested as real Baltic amber. How can you beat that? And modern magazines (Living, Food Network...) for 69 cents each for those of us who do not want to pay full price for magazines? And the discounts you can get on remnants of vintage fabrics, wool needlepoint yarn, and abandoned partially completed vintage needlework kits can be amazing for those of us fiber artists who repurpose vintage materials to make quilts, patchwork garments, needlepoint hand bags, etc. And the vintage costume jewelry -- Sara Coventry, Trifari, Art and Berebi -- that they group with the cheap modern stuff and under-price? Savers stores can be a great place for bargains if you go there just when they open, shop there daily and know how to use their coupons and discounts. My favorite Savers is located on the edge of an upscale neighborhood where lots of retirees live -- and the amount of vintage, decorative items from foreign countries (Greece, Egypt, Iran...) and high-end, vintage, porcelain table settings (France, Germany, England...) that passes through that store is amazing.
