Күн бұрын

I was browsing eBay the other day and I came across this model for $10.50. I have never painted anything from the Oldworld Tomb Kings army and I thought this would be really fun. Turns out, Tomb Kings are really great models that evoke a ton of memories and emotion surrounding ancient Egypt (Im looking at you "The Mummy"). While a lot of what is being triggered in my nostalgic head might be Hollywood in general, I can't help but love the way this looks. This was a great model to paint and I am looking forward to getting my hands on more Tomb Kings in the future! I hope you enjoy the video, and if you are a fan of the model, I am putting this guy right back on ebay for the $10.50 that I bought him for. Thank you for your support as always, I couldn't and wouldn't be here without the support that you all give. Whether that's subscribing, or going as far as bidding on an auction, Thank you all!

i find with tomb kings, a more burnished or red-gold works really well as a basecoat, it adds a stronger contrast against the other colours. that said, the way you did it looked great too, the contrast issue was well handled, still there a little though.

One little bit of advice for auction listings on ebay from an experienced seller. Always start your 10 day listings on Thursday night. (or if you want to put it up on Sunday, just do a 7-day listing) That way they will end on Sunday night, which is pretty much the best time to end an auction. That is when the most people are online, and if you have a quality listing like you have you can have the it double in the last minute of bidding. No matter what time your auction ends there are always peolps who will snipe an auction in last seconds if it is somethiong they want, but ending it on sunday knight gives the most number of people a chance to bid. BTW you have some great pictures up for the listing.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice! I usually do a 10 day auction because the video will get viewed more in that span of time. Makes sense that more people would be online Sunday night, these auctions have been ending in the middle of the week. I might try just doing 7 days Sunday to Sunday.

The Liche Priest looks amazing. As others have said a terracotta type red/brown works well with a gold, as gold is an earth colour. As for resin, try the Green Stuff World UV resin. I've had a lot of success with it, mainly replicating bits and pieces for terrain building (door frames, window frames, etc), though I have started to make some shields. You do need a UV torch, which hardens it in a fairly short time, depending on how much resin has been used. It can smell quite strong when setting, so good ventilation is prefered. And you can sand and paint it. You can also add colour to it if you want. They recently released a couple of other colours as well as the clear, which is what I've been using. And they do sell a little UV torch if you don't have one. I believe the resin they use is similar to the UV resin used in nail salons, but I haven't really looked into how close they really are. It may be a cheaper option, as hobby supplies tend to be the more expensive option. Looking forward to the Tau, along with other future projects. 😉 (edit for spelling)

I’ll have to look into it for sure, I’ve seen that stuff used as gap filler too, seems to work pretty well with a little plastic syringe, UV cure it and sand it down. Seems pretty versatile!

I love Aethermatic Blue! I use it on my Marines for a simple plasma and power weapon effect. Leadbelcher base, edge/coil gradient/lightning with Ceremite white, then a layer or two of Aethermatic. Some more Ceremite to make the edges really pop then a really light layer of Aethermatic to tint the latest white a touch. It's amateur hour, but it looks legit for TT quality. Just gotta practice thinning the lightning down.

Nothing wrong with doing coils like that. I do that all the time, contrast has made it pretty easy to get those done to a good tabletop level. And unless the model is going to be purely for display I don’t see anything wrong with doing it the way you described :)

I like your take/approach here and I think, by and large, the finished miniature looks great! Another route which might be interesting to experiment with is to go with dark tones for the leathery, mummified flesh, not unlike what you see on some actual mummies; it would definitely punch up the contrast. The addition of the Aethermantic Blue (one of my favorite Contrast Paints) was a nice touch and really sold the idea of the weapons having some sort of magic quality. Finally, the idea for the pattern on the snake scales was a nice touch; I think if they'd all been painted the same color it would have been a bit too much, especially with the size of that headdress. Honestly, in my opinion the Gold and Copper are the only Vallejo Metal Colors paints that don't stand out like the rest of the line; they always look much to washed out and faded for my preferences. I still stick with the alcohol based Vallejo Liquid Gold/Silver/Copper paints for that; the Old Gold or Red Gold might have been a nice contrast on this project. However, I will offer this caveat; if you've never used them before, they're *very* finnicky; the metallic powder they use for pigment is so delicate that they have to suspend it in alcohol, so in order to thin it and clean the brushes you use for it you need 91% or higher isopropyl alcohol, you should only use synthetic brushes with it (the alcohol will dry out and damage natural bristles) and once you use a brush for them you really can't use it for anything else because the water content of acrylic paints or trying to clean the brushes with water will cause the residual metal powder still in the bristles to rust. That being said, the results are really beautiful.

Nice work on this one, though on the contrast point, you might want to take a look at some reference photos of mummified skin, as it tends to be quite dark, compared to the owner's original skin tone, which could really play nice with the whole thing. It just feels like a missed opportunity.
@Belzediel
@Belzediel 4 жыл бұрын
The OKA Egyptians were black, so, 'quite dark' skin compared to what? I mean, I'd agree with the general point; why on earth would you look at that model and think 'Oh yeah, white dude', but you seems to be suggesting that mummies 'went chocolate' after death. Might be being punk'd though, if so, fair game, have yet to get through my second cup so might be a bit slow.
@mtgskunkworx1671
@mtgskunkworx1671 4 жыл бұрын
@@Belzediel actually, the darkening holds true for mummified remains dug up in Irish peat bogs, too. The mechanism may change from method to method, tannic acid being the case for the more northern example, but I think it may even hold for the functionally freeze-dried remains even on Everest, if I recall correctly. Not looking to get one over, not trying to play SJW, either. Just pointing out that, regardless of skin tone, the end product of mummification can, and frequently does, wind up with a much darker color than the starting sample, regardless of the starting skin tone.
@Belzediel
@Belzediel 4 жыл бұрын
Unless you're trying to suggest AOK Egyptians were white, then, I guess, that's kinda a back up, I guess. I mean there are plenty of white skinned mummified corpses about, so, darkening down is far from universal, and I think I'd be reasonable in suggesting a boddy immersed in coal black peat for a hundred years might get a tad stained, but, in any case, we'd be in agreement that the skin tone of the miniature is not authentic. I am 100% certain that this is a parody channel, so felt no need to make that observation directly (it would be entirely in character for the pale skin to be a gag at viewers expense) but it's always annoying to find this latency still kicking around that AOKs looked more or less like Charlton Heston and Liz Taylor. I'm exceedingly woke-averse, but even I get a tad annoyed that in tabletop gaming there's little room for ethnicity. No, I wouldn't push for representative armies, no sane person cares enough, but, if you look into those fantasy peoples inspired by non-european cultures there's a distressing tendency to bypass the skin colour issue by making them frogs instead. Seriously. It's almost always frogs, or lizards. Something amazingly bizarre in the deep s/c there.
@steggoraptor
@steggoraptor 4 жыл бұрын
@@Belzediel Mummification darkens the skin. Also ancient egyptians weren't black. In its over 3000 years of history and over 300,000 square miles of land, ancient egypt was never racial homogenous, but genetic, artistic, and linguistic evidence points to the largest group being red or white depending on the time period.
