I really wish the US would follow suit with the Netherlands and ban the breeding of brachycephalic animals AND try to return dogs like the pug to their original breed standards (aka having a regular, functioning airway).

@@Adrastia Even in the 1960s when my dad bred pugs, they had a longer muzzle than today, were taller, and could actually breathe. And that has only been 60 years ago. I have some pics of dad's dogs----they look cuter than today;s pugs, and their eyes didn't bug out as much neither. He had all 5 colors----fawn male and female, black female, silver fawn female, and apricot female. They delivered and nursed the pups just fine. My job as a kid was to walk his dogs every day. Retro pugs are cute. They're pugs bread with other dogs to give them a longer snout like they used to have a long time ago. I think there are some people or companies out there that are trying to breed them to be healthier and turn them back into what they used to look like before we made them have so many health problems. I can’t remember the name of either one but they’re out there.
@SayuriTsukine9 ай бұрын
Brachycephalic breeds are at higher risk of being born with cleft palate (like their cat Chou Chou was) and with so little space between the nose and mouth, it's easy for liquids to accidentally get into the nose when bottle feeding gets messy. Bottle feeding simply isn't safe to do with these flat faces. There's a large myriad of reasons why these animals are incompatible with life. Deformed faces and skeletons, inability to breathe normally, cats aren't able to groom themselves, pugs have sleep apnea, their brains are literally being squeezed by their skulls (and some of these animals suffer seizures), wrinkles in the skin causes infections without regular maintenance, intolerance to anything but mild temperatures (poor thermoregulation)... The closest human equivalents I can think of are the Hapsburg dynasty. They're so messed up that they can't even breed and give birth naturally without human intervention. It's a marvel of modern science that they even still exist.

even though we're big on Don't Support Breeders, how do people feel about the retro pug which is a project to give them their original faces/unflatten their faces?
@astrinymris99539 ай бұрын
According to Kim Kavin, the market for dogs is big enough that if all the shelters were emptied there would still be a demand for puppies. So buying retro pugs is fine, especially if you adopt a shelter pup at the same time. The problem is that a large segment of the dog owning population believes that shelter dogs are damaged goods, so they buy from puppy mills/backyard breeders, thinking the resulting pups are somehow better, despite the hideous conditions in such places. Mind you, these prospective owners don't know this, because unscrupulous breeders are experts at "puppy laundering". I highly recommend Kavin's book 'The Dog Merchants' which gives practical tips on how to make sure your new canine companion is ethically sourced. And to that end, I think we need to get the word out about brachy breeds and their suffering, and urge people to stop buying flat-faced dogs. If demand for them disappears, the supply will dry up.

They remind me of my dog Mabel when she was a newborn, though she had a much longer healthy snoot. Her mom was my cousin's, her name is Cika and she's a French bulldog, despite the fact that my cousin bred her she refused to do so with other breeds that have super short snouts. Mabel's dad is a pitbull dachshund mix! She got most of the Pitbull and Frenchie genes so she's our little beef cake, with ears that stand up when she's excited or curious. Some of her siblings on the other hand look like tiny pitbulls with long bodies and short lil legs. None of them really look like Frenchies because they actually have noses and can breathe, though they certainly have the personality and sass of them lol. All babies were able to nurse and all of them survived! I believe Mabel was apart of Cika's second and last litter before she was thankfully spayed. We took care of Cika and her puppies for about a week when they themselves were a week old while my cousin was moving. I still see some of Cika's mannerisms in Mabel, like the token "Cika stare" and the way she tilts her head and sticks her ears up. But anyways, you really really should not breed your pugs or French bulldogs, it is so hard on their bodies and often times the puppies have to be delivered via C-section. My cousin stopped breeding her out of concern for her health, but unfortunately not all dogs that are bred have caring and loving owners who are willing to stop and rethink what they're doing for their pets. These breeds have gotten so out of control and they are suffering for it, if you are going to breed one of these dogs, please do it with other breeds that will ensure that the babies and born happy and healthy, and that you aren't risking the mom's health either.

Ironically it was two pugs my mom adopted in 05 named Gracie and Owen, who changed my opinion of adopt don't shop. They were rescue pugs from a puppy mill, owen was ok standard male pug and the best companion i had growing up, but gracie oh poor gracie. Girl was bloated, had a snaggletooth, her back legs didn't work right and she kinda wobbled a bit when walking or running. But they were healthy, happy and lived long lives until they passed nearly a decade ago. I remember being told Gracie had so many puppies that she became like that.... I keep that in mind whenever I see pet stores and the like. I dont condemn all but i encourage everyone to adopt, heck for cat lovers it's even easier since cats can follow you home anywhere! I miss those pugs and i hope all future pugs have a snout...

I wished people would stop breeding brachycephalic dogs and cats, they aren't doing any one a favor. I know some breeders try to breed longer snouts in pugs and bulldogs, so the breathing difficulties and risk for open palates are smaller. Best would be they'd stop breeding them at all. But as long as there's a demand it would be better for registered and responsible breeders to breed "healthy" puppies than puppy mills mass breeding sick pups.
