The general consensus between me and my friends (also die hard Resi fans) is that Resident Evil would work best as a TV series with like... one or two seasons dedicated to one game installment. Gives time to flesh out the story and characters as well as pay tribute to all the iconic moments from the games.

I think the majority of games out there would benefit from being adapted into shows rather than movies. Castlevania has proven this, and I'll bet a Resident Evil show could make great use of the extra time to build up and develop events and characters. I wouldn't mind seeing what the protagonists get up to when they're not fighting for their lives against zombies and abominations of mad science.

I cant for the life of me figure out why they just dont adapt the sd perry novels. They are very faithful to the games, while taking their own liberties with some things, as well as adding lore that isn’t in the game series that makes it its own universe. They could totally capitalize on the Trent character and finally resolve his plot thread.

God, I like the novels fine, but I fucking hate Trent. He removes the agency of the main characters every time he shows up. I hope he never shows up in a movie.

Everything you said was spot on to how I feel about the movie. Leon is my favorite RE character and to see him get turned into comic relief was kind of disheartening. Also Birkin is my favorite villian. I love how the videogames show his gradual transformation and it was so rushed. Some smaller notes...the CGI was cringingly bad and the characters don't react to anything. Chief Irons got killed by a Licker and they just move on without a second thought. Sherry literally watched her parents die right before her eyes and she just took it like a champ. ...but I did like the Chris gunfight scene you mentioned and I actually liked the flushed out orphanage backstory for Chris and Claire (minus the father connection with Birkin).

Everyone told me not judge the movie by its trailers. So I went in open minded. I went in with low expectations and I still left disappointed. This was Subverting expectations the movie. Every character are opposite from the game characters but this is what people argued with me about because they said they didn't want the same from the game and wanted it to be different...Well, that's what they got and they still hated it. lol. Even if they didn't race swap the characters and stayed true to the characters looks it still wouldn't have saved this film from its script. The virus acts more like the virus from Romero's 'The Crazies' and not the virus from 'Night Of The Living Dead'. So the zombies you see on screen are still aware and not technically deteriorating until the 3rd act where they are just full on Romero's Living Dead. So it's like a mix of Crazies and Living Dead virus's. I felt it should have stayed more with Living Dead. The director said he was gonna stay faithful to the source...BY DOing THe exact Opposite? But after re evaluating his comment I think he just meant the sets, music, foley, colors, eerie environment and aesthetic. lol. Because he did piss poor on story and characters. My only disagreement with you is that it needs to be as faithful as possible. Look at RE1 remake...It not only perfected the game graphics wise but it added to the lore but still staying true to the source material. When I think something needs to be changed in a game adaption I think of getting rid of shoulder pads and the beret because no special unit in police departments went out with that in the 90's. So aesthetically It will be just a vest and maybe a ball cap. I would even use the alternate costume that she has in RE1remake. Things like that. but not Race swapping or removing environments or characters from the main story line. Let alone changing character traits in order to be 'Different from the games'.

This movie definitely had a chance. The soundtrack was pretty solid, and as you noted the cinematography is actually pretty great and meshes well with the tone and setting of the movie. And speaking of setting, the location scouts did a great job picking the town they used for filming. It felt very true to games. I think because of that, when they did actually get scenes right (like the Chris scene in the mansion you mentioned) it works really well. All of the "1998" touches were great too! The music, the guy playing snake on his phone, the cars, the computers. It felt authentic. Really, most of the early parts with the cast were pretty good. I thought the scene in the diner with them eating dinner before their overnight shift was cool. It really humanized them and grounded the whole incident in some reality. Also the guy who played Irons did a great job and really brought some energy to the whole thing considering how lifeless most of the cast felt for the rest of the movie (the script was pretty horrendous so I don't blame the actors). I dunno, overall I left the movie thinking it was a bit of a letdown but not a total disaster. I got the sense the director tried to make a movie that was faithful to the series but ultimately a bad script, a low budget, and cramming too much into one movie was too much to overcome. BTW - loved your complete history of Resident Evil videos.

I was mad when the Anderson movies turned Wesker into a side character, but in this? He's just wrong all the way around. My biggest complaint is that they had so much source material that they still managed to bomb it. You can tell they did their research with the amount of Easter eggs, but thats about it. With Jill being in the mansion at the same time as the outbreak, that leaves no room for RE3 and nemesis to become a thing. Everything just happened way too fast. It wasn't THAT bad, like last Paul Anderson adaptations, and there were some good moments. The good things were: Mansion, piano puzzle, classic zombie scene, police station, Jill sandwich joke, claire riding bike, zombies at the police station entrance, Lisa Trevor, Ashford Twins and Ben. But there were a lot of bad things like when zombies draw words with their blood, Leon was really dumb and everyone trolled him too much, he even didn't hear explosion of the truck in front of him, he caused the death of Ben, and etc. Zombies sometimes walk or run straight at people, and sometimes they are like sneaky predators, hard to understand if they are smart or not. No bravo team or their backstory in the movie. Zombie broke helicopter's glass, like how? G-Birkin dialogues were so bad, it was painful to watch. Valentine's curly hair and no blue beret. Ben's death was dumb, if he new about T and G viruses and held a gun, why wasn't he shooting or at least watch for his cell mate. Rocket launcher explosion in the train near Chris and he was ok and everyone was ok. Exposion in a little metal room is not good for the ears you know. Racoon city destruction animatio was awful. Fights in the mansion were messy, at one scene Chris was cought by three zombies and shouting "Aiken", and the next scene he is running away and shooting. How he survived? I don't know. Like how Claire sneaked to the Police Station parking lot and armed herself with a fire distinguisher, or how she escaped orphanage or where are other policeman, only two special teams, their Chief and no person to look at the cameras in the police station? Or how Birkin injected himself with G-virus? He was shot three times in the chest, than we saw a syringe in his hand, then his wife gave him a vial and then in front of Vesker he filled syringe with G-virus and made an injection and Vesker DID NOT SEE THAT. Or how Birkin knew that Chris was there? Too many questions, but I didn't feel bad after the movie, I expected much worse after watching "The Final Chapter" that was much worse even that "Extinction" and so I can give sequel a chance. But only if they won't ruin characters like that. That's not Resident Evil games Leon, but Leon from Earth "random numbers".

When you try and combine two separate stories into one, the results never turn out well. You can pepper as much fan service in as possible, but fan service doesn't make up for a lack of good storytelling. I'm all for a new interpretation that's more faithful to the games, but you need a good writer and director to make it work.
@akapotatobrad Жыл бұрын
(Most of my in depth analysis about RE lore comes from your videos - keep up the great work, can’t wait to see more.) I agree that the transition for Wesker from friend to traitor was very sudden and built up poorly. When I really think about it, the movie’s greatest weakness (and it’s greatest strength) is it’s knowledge and reliance on detailed RE lore. If you spend time outside of playing the video games to know more about the world of RE, this movie can be a delight depending on how much slack you want to cut it for its brisk pacing. For those who are only vaguely aware of the mainline entries (1-7 and 1-3 remakes) the movie could easily be written off as confusing, rushed and underdeveloped. As for the happening of RE1 and RE2 simultaneously, I think it’s in universe explanation of Racoon City being a corporate town, where the entire existence of the town is predecated and determined by Umbrella’s presence, is enough. It definitely could’ve been explored further (the move could have used an extra 20-30 minutes to get more into the espionage and calculating nature of Umbrella C-Suite officers), but is the one of the movies biggest issues? I would have to disagree with that strongly. Also there is a blink and you miss it acknowledgement of Umbrella’s military presence in the town; when Irons is leaving, the UBCS soliders that gun down civilians radios containment confirmation to someone offsite. Small, but it exists in the film. Leon being inept actually makes a ton of sense. He IS actually a rookie. The movie drags a bit showing AND telling that to the audience, but Leon survives Raccoon City because the player controls him. You have to die over and over again to overcome certain challenges in the game. But this leads into the movie’s real biggest weakness - you have to actively and readily adjust how much of the video game lore you apply to each element presented in the movie. Lisa Trevor? I’m presuming her backstory is the same as the video game (somebody give her a hug). No Barry? That’s OK, we got Jill sandwich in the first five minutes. The Ashford Twins? Weird flex, but okay. Only an RE lore historian would have the privilege of being able to generously apply any greatest context to other hints and mentions made in the movie. But to those who are saying that this is a “bad” film, or that the Anderson live adaptations are more faithful, I just completelt disagree with and think are wrong on both takes. It was a fun movie, it understands the campiness of the RE franchise at large, and at the end of the day, if you want to spend twenty, or ten, or even five hours exploring the Spencer mansion, you’re in luck!! The creator has a clear appreciation for the detail of RE lore and the major backlash in the commentd and across the web only leave me wondering: What movie did you guys watch?

Agreed 3000...I have also stated on other channels that with this movie, I have officially given up hope that Hollywood would ever make a decent RE film..I literally needed a few days to recover after I saw it.I saw a few people try to defend the changes in characters like Wesker and Irons and ultimately defend the lack of character, most of the characters had, as though they were being so intelligent in changing those aspects up. Well, it's not intelligent. It's just lazy writing. The script was horrific and if you enjoyed that crap, you are shallow and plain weird. They completely bombed every character not named Claire in this movie..

RE fans want to feel shivers down the spine, goosebumps, like when you were playing this videogame and you were 14 (in 1998) and suddenly you jumped and freaked out because mister x showed up! They should've done a way better job!

I had completely forgotten this film was even coming. After your incredible in-depth RE Timeline series I'd happily trust your view and opinion on this. Some of the things you said they'd done disappointed me, and when you showed that shot of "Leon", I said to myself "THAT'S Leon?". Yeah... not sure about seeing this, now. As someone else said in the comments, this style would have lent itself better to a TV series, rather than try to cram the story of two or three games into less than two hours.

All I liked in the movie were the Easter eggs to the games. Nothing more. But Leon's depiction of how utterly incompetent he is was so damn brutal. They made me think that Leon can't go to the toilet by himself or he will shoot himself :D

I quite liked the movie for the actors, story (even if it's squished together unfortunately) and Easter Eggs I only noticed a couple though so shame on me. My friend told me there was like 50 in the movie. Couple things that bugged me was that Leon's actor made me IMMEDIATELY think it was friggin Carlos 🤣 the entire time and when I'm suppose to say Leon I said Carlos to my friends. No offense to the actor but the dude had that big ass gorgeous crazy hair it's not really a bad thing I just find it hilarious. Then there's not enough people out on the streets to give that zombie outbreak feel or like what GamerThumb said. Last problem I had was like I mentioned they tried squeezing 1 and 2 together. They could have either made the movie a little longer or made it separate but all in all I'll at least look forward to the next movie. I'm definitely forgetting a couple of things. Oh yeah and Wesker being a sympathetic character Sssss yeah that dulled the movie a little for me. But because I never played all the games to really enjoy Wesker, I only played 5 as my first resident Evil game with my sister so I'm not too attached to him like most might be. I can already see however that with the ending they gave Wesker of coming back from the dead and now turned (probably) super human like in the video games he'll see this as some eye opening thing and try to change the world through the virus.

100% agree with everything you said here, you and I pretty much everything had the same thoughts after watching this movie. The characters, there isn't that many of them in this movie and still, the director and writing had such a hard time developing what they wanted to do with these characters. Claire is the main character, which was fine I guess, but there's no chance to even get to like anyone cause everyone was written poorly. Chris was actually my favorite considering he was closer to the games than anyone else was. There is also a big issue with the pacing, the horror is there but the zombies and outbreak take too long to even happen. By the time the zombies actually come the movies over. The pacing is somehow dragged out by the flashbacks and wide shots of the city the same shots throughout the whole movie, no explosions no zombies wandering the city except towards the end. And to be honest, the outbreak wasn't bad lol umbrella contained the city, they had no issue using lethal force, there was no reason to destroy the city when you think of it. The outbreak in apocalypse was much better and much bigger. The reason the first original movie did correctly the virus started in the lab under the mansion and was let out by curious and arrogant scientists. You can simple make the resident evil spencer mansion into a whole movie no problem, you can build up that tension leading up to the mansion. The mansion scenes in this movie were the best thing I seen in a resident evil movie, the claustrophobia was there the atmosphere, the running out of bullets the darkness. The joke of that scene though is the budget didn't let them go past certain areas, the dining room, library and main hall. Would've loved to see them explore more, instead of doing the dogs attacking them once they find the jeep of bravo team. You can have the dog crash into the Mansion ala the first game and kill Richard or even just another non important character. As much plot armor the main characters had they weren't likable lol. I can go on and on but I think we can write something better 100%

I personally hate how Jill was in here and for a quick example of why compare the scene from the game and this movie outside the mansion *spoilers* The game: she’s very hesitant to react in shock and fails to save Joseph but you see the pain in her eyes about the loss of a friend The movie: the team sees a zombie crow and wesker is looking at it in confusion Jill shoots it and is like teehee birdy go bye bye and gets scolded for being so trigger happy This isn’t Jill in any way other then name…Jill is my favorite character in the series and it’s heartbreaking seeing her done dirty like this…

They could of done the first half resident evil one and second half resident evil 2. The second game didn't take place until 2 months after the first. If they did it like the movie then Clair would of found Chris easier then she did in the games. Get it right or don't do it at all. There are 9 main series games. That would make for 8-9 movies if done right. You could do 0 and 1 together then have the other 7 as stand alone movies. Look at that I figured it out without much thought. If your going to do a game movie then appel to the fans of the series and not the studios that haven't played the game and are just looking for a cash grab.

A very massive shame. It really did showed to have good promise. But I REALLY think and believed it needed more time to cook in the oven and just focus on one thing. 1. Make the Spencer Mansion as 1 movie with lots of horror elements and tense moments you that keeps you guessing with small bits of 0 and show a small sign on what to come for Raccoon City near the end. 2. Then make the Raccoon City portion for a sequel and not rush and balance it with both lots of horror and a bit of action but ALL of horror galore with mass chaos. The groundwork was fully there like you said but they’ve fumbled it big time. All I can say is had promise but OOF.. 😞

I saw a video about what they planned to do for this movie. Not even 1/5 through the video, I had to stop watching. They got to why Claire was going to RC... And I fucking CRINGED. Claire breaks the number one rule of survival horror: If you hear something is wrong with a place, DON'T GO OVER THERE. Leon, my favorite RE character, looks more like Carlos than Leon. And Chris Redfield looks more like Piers Nivans from RE6 (which was a good game. Change my mind) And the whole RC outbreak was fucked up. Instead of it happening over the course of the summer like in the games... The shit happens in one night. It's like they've only heard a basic concept of Resident Evil, and decided to impress fans who never even heard of the series by just writing a zombie story with that concept. Why not just stick with the OG lore?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!
@Dreadjaws3 жыл бұрын
Combining the first two games into one story was a majorly bad idea, considering the complete difference in tone they both have. Basically, RE1 is Alien and RE2 is Aliens. The first one is slasher horror and the second one is an action film. You can't just copy and paste them together and expect a coherent product. But Jesus, what they did to the characters regardless of plot is unforgivable.

I saw the film for a second time last night. I will say I enjoyed it a bit more than the first time, but still overall felt like it was poorly done in some aspects. I dont blame Roberts for every flaw. You can tell this movie was cut heavily from how some of the abrupt edits are. However, I do fault him for his choices of combining the first two games. The two games hold WAAAYYYYY too much story to be shot in one film. It kills overall story and character development. I just really wished they had focused on one game. Due to this choice it made several characters completely useless, such as Sherry and Annette. Wesker, I was not a fan of. I didn't like the way his character was written. If wesker isn't a very calculated person, who was already working for Umbrella, then it just doesn't work.. for me that totally ruined it. Up until we saw the palm pilot info was correct, he was a good guy who was considering taking the offer if it was legit. I will say I liked the palm pilot nod to the book series, as that's what Trent gives Jill in the locker room at the RPD. Chris I thought was great. I loved his character, and thought it was very true to the game version of early Chris. Jill was just there. And really nothing more. I actually like the actress, and think she could make a good Jill. But the only time i felt like she was remotely relevant is when she introduced herself to Leon. Past that she was just very bland and nothing like the Jill we all know. I really like Akin and Vickers. I thought they were done well in the telling of the story. They fit the roles, and played them well. They did my boy Leon dirty though. I think the actor did great with what he was given, and I think he could have been a perfect Leon. However, they over played the rookie thing, and made him an inept fool for most of the film. He was apathetic about his job, never came across as trying to step up til the very end. The Leon we know was a rookie, yes, but he was also trying really hard to be the best that he could. He wanted to be a good cop. I didn't get that feeling at all from the Leon. Irons was good, but I miss the very disturbed Irons we all know. I blame rushed writing for this. Simply not enough time to flesh out that character, and also by it all happening in one night it didn't give him time for his limited morality to degrade to the phsycho level. Cause in the game they were fighting and barricaded for a while. Birkin was done very well. I love the actor, been a huge fan of his for a while. I think he did a great job, I just wish there was more. Only complaint I have, is all the talking after he transformed. Lisa Trevor could have been removed and I'd have be very happy. I didn't feel she added anything to plot and was a waste of time. I feel like the licker moment would have been a great time for Leon to have stepped up and started his growth as a character. Ben Bertolucci i actually liked. I was ok with his character chance and thought it worked great until the jail scene. They was just cring worthy. He knew exactly what people were becoming, had a gun and just backed right into the zombie in his cell. That whole scene was just bad.
