Just got mine last Friday and it's been a blast! Had only ever dabbled in FDM printing, but this machine has been incredibly easy to learn on. Fantastic job on this video as well! Very well spoken and paced. I'll definitely recommend this to some friends looking to get into printing just so they can get a quick grasp of the concepts.

probably z-axis; moving parts on Mars are good but for the price not the best; before using printer one should test how smooth the head movement is by hand; sometimes rollers are to tight and need to be readjusted; sometimes precision is not superb and with rolling parts even the slightest inaccuracy will make a "bump"; stepper motor here is small and may not have enough power to overcome all the forces caused by those minor imperfections; I've used number of roiling elements from china and you just cannot compare linear slide costing $30 with a high precision one costing 10x more; when you slide those by hand you can feel occasional resistance as balls and roiling surfaces may not be highly precise; Elegoo Mars is cheap and you just don't have highest quality moving parts including rollers and lead screw; doing test by hand and using proper lubrication and sometimes adjustment can help improve z-axis movement; in other cases it could be something else but usually it is mechanics

the white printed plastic thing included is to hold the build plate at an angle, so the resin can flow back in the basin . just remove the plate and put the plastic tool on the holder. After that the plate on the tool... Nice Idea from Elegoo.. Every drip Resin is it worth ^^

put rainx on both sides of the FEP. prevents resin from sticking to the FEP. prevents vacuum between the FEP and LCD. does not leave residue like 3in1 oil. you really don't want tape on the LCD because you want the FEP as close to the LCD as possible. however, you can put kapton tape around the edges of your LCD. kapton tape is very thin and can also prevent spilled resin from getting into the cracks around your LCD

@SuperMakeSomething
@SuperMakeSomething 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! That is a great tip!
@BrenzMarie
@BrenzMarie 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely! In addition, one of the reasons that nitrile (a synthetic copolymer) started to be used in making disposable gloves was the high incidence of latex sensitization and allergy that was occurring in healthcare professionals who had been using latex exam and procedure gloves for years. The nitrile exam glove industry was formed as a result and latex gloves have been all but totally phased-out in hospitals. As a consequence, the other desirable features of nitrile gloves have become recognized (ruggedness, allergy-free, impervious to most chemicals) and they've found their way into many different industries as a form of PPE (personal protective equipment). Harbor Freight has nitrile glove in boxes of 50 or 100 at reasonable prices.

@@SuperMakeSomething There was a difference which left me a bit baffled about (as it did not follow the pamphlet) the levelling paper sheet rather than the fep container. Makes sense as ususlly in further prints the tank will have resin in it so it can be done with the paper.
@SuperMakeSomething

Round Tuit This is a difference between the included manual and the official Elegoo videos. I believe both would work, however I went with the paper in order to minimize the chance of damaging the FEP film during leveling just in case. Not sure if one works better than the other - I just figured less mechanical wear on the film = longer life.

Small because in order to keep costs down, they all use cheaply available smartphone LCD screens. So you're limited to the size of a smartphone. You could always build your own using a tablet screen. OR get higher resolution by switching to a 4K LCD screen.

But your Mars print is squashed in the Z axis. You should print a 1x1x1 cube and measure it.
@BenJaminLongTime
@BenJaminLongTime 5 жыл бұрын
a different review I watched the guy had that problem too, it is just because there is a little button that is kinda hidden where you can select your printer manufacture in the slicer software. Once you do that the squished Z goes away. The built in test print (the rooks) come out perfect with no squished Z, showing that the printer is not the issue but rather the slicer. Also that white residue on his print the other review guy said was due to not letting the alcohol evaporate off the surface before setting in light to finish curing. This printer is looking pretty good, I have wanted SLA for a long time but it has been just a bit too pricy but I am thinking maybe not so much any more.

Can you explain what you mean by this? I would like to make sure my prints turn out good :)
@selvalss
@selvalss 4 жыл бұрын
@@thebarefoothobbit Sometime its steps are wrong, instead of printing 10mm, it's printing 9,5mm. The test would be printing a cube of 10x10x10mm and measure it and see how different it is from the 10mm it was supposed to be. Then there's calculations to make about the step settings of the machine to correct it. Lets use the example I gave, you print a 10x10x10mm cube and the z axis measured is only 9,5 mm it means that it is wrong. You then proceed to the config file to see how many steps it is for the theoretical 10mm and it's writen 200 steps per 10mm, but since you are getting only 9,5 mm you correct it by (10/9,5)x200=210 steps. Now you can overwrite the settings of the machine from 200 steps /10 mm to 210 steps/10mm. This works also with cm or inches. Now you "stretched" the printings to be corrected. Cheers

Instead of masking tape, you should seal all the edges of the LCD with Kapton tape. This prevents the FEP from sticking and in case you have a tear in the FEP during a print, prevents resin from seeping down into the LCD/printer.

Except for the inclusion of the music track, your video is a master class in how to make instructional KZbin videos. I appreciate that you kept the music track level low, but seriously, for these kinds of vids, music is only appropriate at the beginning and end, and occasionally for transitions. But what I really wanted to say is that, unlike so many of the amateur hacks on KZbin, you obviously know your stuff and are multi-talented. You apparently took the time to script out what you wanted to say. You said it clearly, succinctly, and quickly. You moved through your material in a logical manner. You had great graphics, superb editing, and the equipment and procedure vids with the voice-overs were shot skillfully. In its totality, this was a very well-done presentation. Henceforth, whenever I encounter one of those painful KZbin videos with some mumbling, bumbling fool as the star of the show, I am going to send a link to your video with the suggestion that this is how it should be done. That said, my Elegoo Mars arrived earlier today so I watched your presentation before unpacking and proceeding with my first print. All turned out well, which I attribute to Elegoo's product and the training and instruction I received from you video. Thank you for your efforts.

@JeremyCook

Thanks so much for the good explanation. I was thinking all SLA printers used the method that is actually MSLA. Is laser (or standard, it seems) SLA common in the maker space? Love the resolution capability, but the chemicals/work environment concerns just seems like such a barrier to entry.
@SuperMakeSomething
@SuperMakeSomething 2 жыл бұрын
The most common “maker”-ish level SLA printers would probably be those from Formlabs, though I have not used them myself. Resin printing is definitely a bit more involved compared to FDM printing, so I typically decide which one to use depending on the intended application of the part.

The problem I have experienced with low cost resin printers such as the Mars and Photon S is poor dimensional accuracy. They are great for things like figurines due to the high level of detail. However, I have not been able to get them to print parts that are dimensionally accurate for prototyping functional parts. I recently calibrated one so that the print was accurate to within 0.002" of the CAD model. But when I printed the other half of the model it was off again and did not match up to the first half I printed. Is this pretty much the case with all lower cost resin printers? I also experienced "puffing" on the side with supports where the area near the supports tended to grown and be thicker than they should be with both the Mars and Photon printers. I have a Prusa MK2 and MK3 and found that both of them have dimensional accuracy that is more consistent and repeatable compared to the resin printers. I have been rather frustrated not being able to achieve good dimensional accuracy on the resin printers that I have been able to achieve with my FDM printers. Not sure what to do short of spending 15x the money on a higher end resin printer. Help!

@SuperMakeSomething
@SuperMakeSomething 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting -- I have not yet made any parts on the printer that require 0.002" dimensional accuracy, but I will definitely be on the lookout for this in future prints! One of the issues I have with some FDM printers is that there is some variation in my printed part dimensions from variations in the bed height, which sometimes leads to some "smoosh" in the first few layers. The auto-leveling is one of the things I like best about this particular printer, since this has helped me to avoid this issue. Maybe it is time for me to install a bed leveling probe in my FDM machines...

Surely sticking that tape affects the zeroing of the printer? Also the print plate rotated when you did auto levelling. Do you think that is a problem?
@SuperMakeSomething
@SuperMakeSomething 4 жыл бұрын
The tape may affect leveling a bit, but the effect was negligible based on my experience -- the FEP film still made a "popping" sound with every layer, indicating good layer adhesion/clearance between the film and the printing surface. Regarding the build plate rotation -- the build plate seems to be slightly smaller than the exposure area of the screen in order to account for this, though it would certainly be best to try to keep rotation to a minimum when printing modes that use up a lot of the x-y area.

Stoppy chopper All 3D printing models generally start out as STL files, which are then sliced in their respective software (e.g. Cura for FDM and Chitubox for MSLA) in order to allow them to be printed on a specific machine. Therefore you can print the same models on both types of printers, as long as they are sliced with the correct software and settings for that printer.

I have not had the experience that Berat has had, but we may be using different printers. Personally, I do not think that the Mars has a particularly strong odor. I'm really stuck on what to get, I hear that the resin printers require a lot of extra effort whereas the filament printers dont require anything besides maybe sanding. Do you hav ed any recommendations on an affordable FDM printer?
@SuperMakeSomething
@SuperMakeSomething 4 жыл бұрын
FDM printers are definitely another good option depending on what you are looking to do. They definitely have less of a cleanup complexity compared to resin printers, though the resolution won’t be as high. For an immediate recommendation, I would point to either the Creality Ender 5 or the Lotmaxx SC-10, as these have a good trade off between build volume and size. (Check out my videos on both of these printers for more info + affiliate links if you are interested.) I will be live-streaming about the JGAurora A5S this weekend, which has a massive build volume, so that might be a good choice as well. I am currently in the process of reviewing a dual extrusion printer as well, which can be used to print with dissolvable supports, so this overcomes issues related to support removal. Hopefully this will be up in the next month or two, so stay tuned!

This was a very interesting video and you presented a great deal of information in an easy to understand form. I do have a question about hardening the resin in the sun. Could you use one of the UV units that are created for UV hardening gel nail polish? They are small, self contained plug in units that are designed to have someone put their finger tips inside so the UV lights harden the polish on their nails. It seems like it should work and be much more reliable than taking it outside and hoping it is sunny.

Debbie Vozniak Hi Debbie! Thank you for your kind words! Absolutely - using one of those units work very well. I actually use something similar in my follow up video where I review the Elegoo Mars Pro. In that video, I bought a small UV LED lamp and a turntable, which allows for the curing process to be controlled more than simply placing the unit in the sun. This is my first resin printer, so I can’t comment about other printers from first-hand experience. However, it does seem quieter compared to other printers based on KZbin videos I’ve seen. I was working next to the printer while it was making the pieces in this video and did not find it distracting. 🙂

Very good introduction to Resin 3D printing. Now I understand the process. While I am happy with my FDM printer for buildings and terrains, printing figurines has been hit and miss. My main concern is the potential for toxic fumes. I have limited space so I need to have a method of venting those fumes. Also, I am thinking a 'cure box' with a UV light would be more practical than putting the objects outside in the sunlight, particularly in the middle of winter! I have to do some more research as I am also interested in strength and durability of resin printing as I make items that need to be strong, flexible and durable.

Thank you! I'm glad that you liked the video! I am ready to buy my first resin printer. I am choosing resin because I create jewelry and they have the resin casting wax. Could you do a side by side of the few resin printers you have with casting wax and some jewelry models like rings with prongs so we can see if the claims that these will work are real? My hope is to print a casting tree whole on the sprue so I can eliminate molds, wax injecting and treeing by hand. When you think about small links for a bracelet (10 to 20 components) being done one by one compared to this it is going to make it possible to turn out more than one finished product in a week. If you can get a model of a casting tree with several jewelry items on it that would be the ultimate. Try asking Stuller as they make the software (rhino gold) to design these items. The other software is 3-design and Matrix they may want to promote theirs as well. Could be could source for a model file.

@Super Make Something Hey SMS, I have the question you probably get all the time! I'm after an affordable 3D printer with the ability to print smooth geometric type items (not characters or sculpture) as accurately as possible, in both firm and flexible (silicone-esque) type material. I love the smoothness of the Resin but does it shrink or do anything strange? I'm after close tolerances. Obviously I'm not expecting miracles with a $500 machine! But I think the Mars might be a good place to start, especially if it can do a flexible resin too and be somewhat accurate. Any suggestions appreciated. Tks.
@SuperMakeSomething
@SuperMakeSomething 5 жыл бұрын
I believe that there is some shrinkage with resin, but I have not quantified it. I also unfortunately do not have any experience with flexible resins, but I can say that the Mars is definitely a good choice as a resin printer based on my experience if you decide to go that route. In terms of other options for flexible filament, I've heard that the Ender 3 Pro is good for printing NinjaFlex. At this time, I do not have any hands-on time with this printer, but I may very soon and there may be a few social media posts on the way about this style of machine, so stay tuned... ;-) The Ender 3 Pro can be purchased here in case you are interested in going that route: amzn.to/35Rp9US

This video is a bit old sure, but even back in 2019 I'm pretty sure there were 0.2mm nozzles, and hardware/firmware/software for FDM printers that would enable a 0.05mm layer height with said nozzles.

A couple of comments. The comparison showed a supports failure on the MSLA print, with a deformed model. How common is this, because that is potentially a showstopper, and it could cause disconnected geometry to become permentantly bonded to the FEP layer. That could mean damaging the LCD as well if not inspected for. Obviously there are dozens of reasons this could have happened, most of which have nothing to do with the printer itself, but it is worth addressing since it was shown in the video. Also pointing out that the MP Mini Delta officially supports 0.05mm layer heights as well, so that is not particularly a good point to use for differentiation. Minimum feature size is something you could compare them with, as well as the surface finish and especially print time for high resolutions. You can also point out the ability to print actually transparent items, something that is only barely possible in FFF printers. Materials cost is worth addressing, and compatibility with different sensitivity resins. There seems to be an impression in the comments section that this is a replacement for common FFF printing, which it isn't. MSLA is a complimentary printing technology to FFF, and is capable of many things FFF cannot practically do (I have a 5mm tall benchy, so you can do crazy high res with FFF, it is just very painful). FFF is there for large mechanical items, and can produce inexpensive large items with closed cavities. MSLA can print at high resolutions without an exponential increase in print time, is entirely homogeneous across the part, and is far more suited to organic shapes than FFF. I think your editing and presentation was solid. The video was extremely watchable and had a consistent professional tone. If you went a bit more into technical details of why this printer might or might not be perfect for the viewer I believe your content would be among the best.

Flaming Mantis already recommended Nitrile Gloves over the Latex ones, because of durability. But the much more important reason to use Nitrile gloves is, that the resin can go THROUGH the latex ones. So there is effectivly no protection. Btw. the blue ones that came with the printer are made of Nitrile.
@SuperMakeSomething
@SuperMakeSomething 5 жыл бұрын
Good catch! To be honest, the "latex" statement was a narration mistake that I didn't notice until after I uploaded the video (d'oh)! That being said, it's actually led me to learn a lot about Nitrile as a material and its use in industrial/medical applications from the comments, so I'd say it's an overall win! :)

From what I’ve heard the Ender 3 is quite noisy - however I do not have any experience with this printer. However I can say that I do not find the noise of the Mars overly distracting. Since the motor does not use an x-y carriage to move a print head, he only sound coming from the printer is the fan.

Great vid, congrats! Total newbie here, I guess you can't print colored models with this. What kind of machine would take in order to print let's say a head, and have the hair as one color, skin as another, the white of the eyes, etc? Many thanks!
@SuperMakeSomething
@SuperMakeSomething 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Unfortunately doing multicolored prints is impossible with MSLA machines, because resin gets hardened one layer at a time. Therefore, it is not possible to "section off" parts of a print to print different areas in different colors. Your best bet for this would be a dual/multi-extruder FDM machine. I am currently reviewing the QIDI Tech X-Pro, which has two extruders, so it can print in two different colors, so definitely stay tuned for that! Other options exist to allow multiple colors, like the "Palette" add-on from Prusa for example, which might be a good option, though I have not had the chance to try it yet. Hope this helps!
