I work in technology in the San Francisco Bay Area and everything you said makes complete sense. Don't get me wrong, algorithms, like anything, can be used for good. For instance, they're commonly used in medical devices to interpret results and make diagnostic predictions. They're also good for storing comparator data. But like you correctly stated, the formulas or inputs are embedded by humans. Outside the given inputs, they can give no outputs. It's called machine learning for a reason. And it's sad that certain individuals out there believe the fantasy that AI, robots, or machines (they're all the same) can have human consciousness, rational thought, wisdom, or feelings. I work in IT and also worked with machine learning which is the main technology behind AI. The main idea behind machine learning is that we don’t program the machine with all the possible rules to solve a problem (something which conventional programs would do), but instead it creates prediction models based of training from large amounts of data. - a simple version of ML is supervised learning eg: based on data from past customer behaviours, predict if a customer is likely to buy a product, or another eg is predicting/classifying an email as junk. - the more advanced version of ML is called deep learning, it has more complex models which can do things of cognitive nature which is usual human like identifying images, understanding natural language. Eg image detection in Facebook, speech detection in Siri etc. if this can be called intelligence, then yes it is. - all Chat GPT is doing is understanding natural language very well, and combining that with a search algorithm and presenting that content in a way that looks original (but they don’t claim it is) - in the above sense it could be called AI, but computers can never have conscience, be sentient etc like humans.

I work in internet marketing and have been getting bombarded about AI. I actually use AI writing software for some of my more mundane work. And what you say is spot on. When I run it through plagiarism software, you see how it just spins the texts with synonyms and such. In fact, earlier versions of what we now call AI chatgpt was actually called spinning where it just swaps out words and phrases. But you often end up with very awkward phrases that make sense individually, but doesn't fit into the whole piece. Now the AI products are much better in that regard, but it's very easy to forget that this is still just a very sophisticated software that cannot have an actual intelligence.

Back in high school, we dd some social science studies and there was an article about how computers will impact society. The aspect that I remember the mots was that it was predicted that many people would lose their jobs to computers and that did happen but then the opposite happened, more jobs were created due to computers. You find computers everywhere nowadays, in business, medicine, science, entertainment, in cars, in telecommunications, in planes, in ships, in military equipment and so on. You cannot avoid them. Of deal with people who are still afraid of them but sadly it is part of their job to use computers. I have always be fascinated with science, science fiction and robots form an early age. In the original Start Trek we had Spock who though was not a robot due to his upbringing (he was from the planet Vulcan) thought logically like one. In Star Trek, the New Generation (NG) we have Data an artificial life form. So the idea of an artificial being is not new. ChatGPT did not appear out of nowhere. Years or scientific research led to it. I have worked in the ICT field for decades but I did not keep up with AI and it was recently that a friend mentioned it. I did a bit of research and at the start I did not try to use the system but after some tie I signed up. I must admit that I have only briefly used the system but this technology will change the world.. I asked it to write a computer program and it did it in a few seconds... Now imagine that a business hires a new program and pays them top money.. Why not get a junior programmer and let ChatGPT do all the work? That is happening already. I have always believed that if you do not control technology, then technology will control you. Recently my medical surgeon told me that he was tired of doing surgery and would like to learn AI and so I helped him with the basics and now he has started a course. He would like to use the knowledge to use the technology to identify cancer cells in patients... Technology can be used for good or for evil. Explosives can be used to clear rocks for a new bridge to be built but or can also be used in wars to kill people... The danger I see with AI is that it will get to a stage that it will outthink the brightest humans and for some people, it will become like a god, a new idol to be worshiped... This is the danger of AI. Some have said that one day it may become sentient... I don't know enough the tech to predict if this is a possibility. As Christians, we must always be on our guards. Read the Bible, do spiritual exercises, pray, fast, ask God for guidance, ask for forgiveness of sins, pray for your loved ones, pray for the world and above all do not fear death or the enemy for both were vanquished 2000 years ago. Trust in God always. Many have spoken about the mark of the beast and all I say is that the mark cannot be given by stealth, you will need to make a conscious decision in full knowledge to get it, thus knowingly rejecting God. It is no coincidence that so much in robotics is focusing on "human" looking designs with faces, eyes, expression, etc.. It's all part of the effort to conflate the human person with cold data and mechanics for movement. If we think about it, there is NO need to make a robotic device look like a person. It does make us curious and smile and think "how bad can it be?" It's "scientism" which is a "faith" in science and its' by products as the final solution for all of the efficient needs of life. Blending technology with the façade of God's creation moves the focus away from love and what it means to be "... in the image and likeness..." and on to an empty, heartless goal of accumulated data and speed of processing. Hitlers Tower of Babel was believing in the master race which mocked the rest of God's creation. The new Tower of Babel version is the use of technology to achieve that goal. And again God will not be mocked.
