Your critique is pretty on point. I was a surgical fellow in Chicago spending the year away from my wife during my training. So when I wasn’t working long hours I was playing this game on my PS3 in my one room studio apartment. I beat it on Superhuman because … well what else was I gonna do? And it definitely felt like a grind instead of actual fun. I did best Resistance 2 and 3 on Superhuman as well and the third game was by far my favorite. The only thing I remember about the second one was Hale getting shot in the head at the end. I have zero recollection of the first one other than the circumstances under which I beat it.

I feel like a lot of the good reviews for the original Resistance back in the day were just from it being a launch title. At the time I don’t think it was a bad game, it was the must have for PS3 gamers, but I remember after a couple playthroughs, and after bumping up the difficulty for the game, I was just getting bored of it. I don’t remember if I found the game to be unfair, I was only playing on normal at the time. But I do remember the gameplay being clunky, it does kinda try to play like Halo a little bit which feels a little bit off for a PlayStation title, although Halo does it better somehow. The graphics looking back are definitely hideous, like out of all games in the Resistance series, I don’t ever think about revisiting the first game. R:FOM really did age like milk tbh.

I remember liking this game back then, quitting because difficulty, doing the same with the sequel, then finally beating the third one. I thought I couldn't do it because I was a little kid and I sucked at video games As an older guy who still sucks at video games but is just more persistent, fuck this game. I spent tens of hours unlocking every trophy for the Dark Souls trilogy and that was 800x more enjoyable than this 15 hours of torture

I concur. I bailed on R1 because of the interior tunnels close to the end of the game and bailed on R2 at the moment where the chimera wouldn't spawn UNTIL you jumped into the water. R3 with its revamped level design and the return of the weapon wheel was a godsend. Beating it on the hardest difficulty still felt fair.

From what I know, one of the biggest reasons why Resistance: Fall of Man had more issues compared to the sequels was due to Insomiac not having much experience working in the FPS genre (like only other FPS they had ever made by the time they begun developing Resistance was Disruptor for the PS1). Plus the Auger did get better with how it works in the other games though they still have the low ammo count as a balance.

Fall of Man was a decent proof of concept game. It's got it's issues but managed to bring some of Insomniac's creative gun designs from Ratchet and Clank to an FPS, and they worked pretty well. Multiplayer was also interesting but it's long dead.

I played it solo on hardest difficulty and beat it many times it is a very tricky game to play on harder difficultys since it forces slow asf gameplay. Pretty much gotta stick to accurate guns like the actual bullet shooting rifle from the beginning and pop out to shoot an enemy's weak spot than hide again. Try to never take a full bar of HP when you pop out and you will be fine and conserve ammo for weak spots which in most enemies you fight being the guys with those tubes sticking out would be the tubes. Litteraly takes 4 shots to kill them since its their life support and shooting all 4 kills them. A lot of be does happen but know this. You are a human be glad you don't die almost instantly from 1 bullet and also be glad you can see the projectiles that go through walls before they come out also be glad their SMG cants use tracking bullets on you since that would be much harder to deal with. I played so many years ago when it came out and never once played online. The guns from more than 1 play through are worth it but you are right about the game not being too fun if you want to play a run and gun style since its not even close to being comparable to say doom or quake in that sorta way. The game overall is very drab and boring and I honestly would never want to play again for that reason but my favorite part in that game was very beginning when you are outside in the streets. Didn't like the alein areas of the game at all.

I first picked this game up in early 2011 (it was already selling for just $10 by that point) because I was bored and wanted to try out this PS3 exclusive that I missed out on but watched my cousin play back in the day. Immediately I was getting very frustrated. I've died so many times and had to restart so many sections because, as you said, the checkpoints are way too far apart. And those unskippable cutscenes, god. To this day I still haven't beaten it and I don't really want to. It's sad because the concept sounds really cool and the weapons are very interesting. I especially liked that you can carry all of them at once instead of a 2-weapon limit like most other shooters at the time started adopting. Sadly, the gameplay was far too unenjoyable, and the multiplayer was already dead by then too.

I have fond memories of the game and tried to beating it again a few months before my ps3 broke and the two things i remember most where the difficulty and the conversion factory which i would spend a solid ten minutes watching the chimera grunts being made in the background. Difficulty wise the main thing i always remember killing me were those fucking spike grenade and mines and the fact friendly AI was never really helpful aside from drawing fire away from you. I generally wasn't bothered by steel heads due to the fact they were seemingly more agressive and would seem to ignore that they had a auger 60 percent of the time. Bosses i always rember being a pain like the goliaths that you had to shoot the heat sinks on which 8 yearold me ignored because the head was where i was used to shooting. Like most of the standard enemies. I did notice that chimera were more accurate with their weapons but i generally just thought it was because they were built for a chimeras larger frame and was fairly unwieldy in hails hands. Also how come you had to find the specific bullseye to carry it as apposed to picking up one the oned from one hybrids you killed within the past fifteen minutes of playing the game? Also whoever planned the mission where you drive around clearing chimera bases that are packed to the brim with hybrids needs to beaten with a stick.

Yep, i agree. the sequels however greatly improved upon everything, multiplayer included. My first PS3 game was.... Resistance 3. the multiplayer was fantastic at the time. One thing ill add is that the PS3s power was software not hardware and it was a pain in the ass for devs to work with, no wonder xbox and PC games were leagues above the PS3 version.

This game was the Bain of me but I wasn't gonna let it beat me. I forced myself to finish it and get it out of the way. Resistance 2 was a bit better grindy. Resistance 3 was what it should of been. There was even 4 player co-op.

Just like Killzone, a game's difficulty should be based on how it is when playing alone, rather then around playing it in co-op. The difficulty spike should only apply if a "Co-Op Partner" is in the game. Not "assume" they'll be (Borderlands did this pretty well...I forget when did that come out compared to this one and Killzone 2 & 3, because if it's "before" them, then they don't got an excuse for this type of setup, Need to stop making games that only have short term benefits, but will age poorly when those benefits no longer apply, cause minus a few things that aren't that major, I can still replay all the Borderlands game's solo by myself, and some of the character's can still give me access to the stuff you're expected to be doing in Co-Op, As I do agree with you, first time I played this game, it was fun and unique, but playing it again four months ago, especially having the third game in my memory and playing Metro 2033 Redux on Ranger Hardcore difficulty, shows this game's "normal difficulty" was bullshit and unfair, hate games where I have to cheat the system to actually have a fair chance, unless that was intended, which it was not, the game is trash, and honestly the third game is so much it's own thing, it made Hale and his adventures in 1 and 2 utterly pointless as I actually like Capelli as the main character....in Three anyway).

Yeah it didn't age well. I played it when it was first released. The story did help hold things together but on console there weren't a lot of options. I was deployed when it came out so I didn't have a lot of options until I got a PC and could play things like FEAR etc.

Oh yeah I remember this game too. First time I saw it was a few years or so after PS4 launched, so it always looked pretty aged to me. I didn't play it at the time, but my brother rage quit around the docks or so. Years later I try it myself and beat it, but never went for the second playthrough. For me it wasn't that bad in difficulty, I somehow got a rhythm to it that just worked, but I do recall it being a bit of a wake up slap. I also recall many sections that were long and tedious to clear and going for long periods begging the screen for a checkpoint. I don't remember ever having fun with it either, but it being a time waster. Never did get the sequel to work. It just consistently crashed on the menu.

Thank god for this video, I've generally seen praise for this game and I've never understood why. You summed up my issues perfectly. Difficulty done right can be great and rewarding but this was just aggravating. Not to mention the ridiculous health regen system and how quickly you take damage force you to advance at a snail's pace.

i did not understand what people thought was good about this game. i despised everything about it. I thought it was ugly, the gameplay was garbage, the gunplay was garbage, and i only got to play a little bit of multiplayer before it was largely abandoned, and the multi was garbage as well. my best friend loves this game and praises it endlessly, and he might as well be telling me the earth is flat, i just cant see how he can seriously come to that conclusion. im usually pretty forgiving and understanding when it comes to peoples love for older games, like i myself for example, really truly love Two Worlds.... the first one... i have no illusions to its many,.. many problems, but it has a certain charm to it and i love it. but Resistance? i cant wrap my head around the love of this game. Its sub par and mediocre at its absolute best.

Locking things behind a second play through is an AWFUL way to force replay value. If you make a good game, with good combat, and fun enemies, it will be nearly endlessly replayable. See Half-Life 1 or F.E.A.R. Resistance is not a game with replay value, it was awful the first time.

Resistance is a niche franchise, to be sure. you gotta give Insomiac credit for branching out, but they could've done better. the less said about 2, the better. the game was absolutely terrible. too bad the only good game, 3, is the one that ended it. as for the portable spinoffs... well, Retribution wasn't that bad, and i didn't playing Burning Skies, though by looking at gameplay videos, it doesn't look good. and before anyone who likes these games yells at me, it's just my opinion. i like Resistance 3, but the other four games.... yeah, they crap.

Man, I hated this game. Easily the most disappointing PS3 exclusive, though the second one might be even worse because of its cheap difficulty. The combat couldn't be any less enjoyable, every weapon feels like a Nerf gun. The levels are repetitive and the general visual style is butt ugly. Almost every combat encounter is designed as a scripted enemy ambush, so you can't even prepare or use the environment to your advantage. So combine bullet-sponge enemies, weak weapons, ugly graphics, dull levels, repetitive gameplay and a difficulty where if you get out of cover for 2 seconds, the chimera soldiers turn you into swiss cheese. What do you get? One of the most joyless FPS games of the 7th generation. Only the 3rd game is decent.
