If you are a Nerd like me you will know in Star Trek, one of the villains (the Borg) would threaten their enemies by saying "Resistance is Futile". Well, when it comes to smoking a pipe it is not futile, having some resistance is key to a cool relaxing smoke.

After watching this video, I went and packed my pipe paying very close attention to the resistance. Completely changed my experience. I've been practicing my breathing method every time. You have completely taught me everything I know about pipe smoking, and it's one of my favorite parts of the day. It's so relaxing. I started with few English ends, I haven't tried an aromatic yet, but I smile every time I smoke and o roll the smoke around and try to taste all the notes. It's absolutely transcendent.

I am 73 and started out smoking cigars back in early 70's then in a few years started smoking pipes, and over the many years tried going only one way but now I smoke both. I enjoy smoking my cigar sometimes while sipping on the liquor I prefer and after a good meal. I smoke my many pipes all day and all night. I have been watching his videos for a long time and he know everything you need to know about smoking a nice tasting pipe for sure. Check out smoking both

Yep, learning this was THE most important thing in having a consistently great smoke. It's the difference between an unpleasant experience and that sweet, flavorful, 'oh wow this is amazing' experience. The other tip that made a huge difference was learning that tamping, isn't typically 'pushing down' on the tobacco, but rather spreading the ashes around to create a *seal* so that the embers can burn consistently but more cooly, and draw out all that great flavor. This is a great vid. It's critical advice for a new piper.

This gave me a lot of trouble when I started learning with my first pipe! As a novice pipe smoker, I had to wrap my head around what was happening in the bowl. Later I began to associate it with a wood stove fire, or a campfire. I also moved from the "three handshakes" method to the trickle method, because I found that it gives me more consistent results, especially when packing on the go on my lap, anywhere I don't have a table or other comfortable surface.

Thanks Muttnchop, I was going to ask about resistance. What I’ve noticed is that the lit draw and the pre-lit draw are completely different. The pre-lit draw can be wide open but once it’s lit it tightens up to the perfect amount, and then if it does go out - it’s back to wide open again. This means I really struggle with determining the right pack pressure, if I pack to a drinks straw resistance, once I light it’s just too tight. I’ve settled on packing on the looser side and then lighting, once lit I’ll adjust it with the tamper and go from there. Just a hint of resistance but still nice and easy.

Salutationa a Spanish follower here! First of all, thank you for your videos. I wanted to mention something that I've thought for some time and I'm suprised none of the Spaniards following you have pointed out (and I'm sure there are a few out there). The was a very cherished comic strip called "Zipi y Zape" by Escobar, that lasted for decades, starting in the 40s, and that has influenced Spanish children at least until my generation (born in the 90s). Well, the thing is that Zipi and Zape's dad, don Pantuflo Zapatilla, not only smokes pipes, but also wears mutton chops. The similarity is uncanny! You should please take a look. It almost feel that he was a source of inspiration 😎. Kind regards!

You always manage to convey serenity and tranquility. Starting to smoke a pipe is really complicated at times and videos like these help a lot not only those who are starting out, but also those who have been smokers for a long time. I always advise former cigarette smokers, who are approaching the pleasure of the pipe, that the resistance with the pipe draw must be less than the intensity needed for the cigarette draw. Happy Smoking to Everyone 🔥🔥

I use either the progressive pressure method you described or the upside down swirl method. But when I pack it down that final time, my goal is to get it feeling like a sponge, somewhat firm but with with an easy bounce. I test the draw and aim for similar resistance to drinking a soda through a straw. If I feel interrupted flow from the draft hole being partially blocked, I gently dig out the tobacco and repack.
