Should you buy Death Stranding in 2023?
Death Stranding is one of the most divisive games we've seen in recent times and at the time of release back in November 2019, Death Stranding was met with similar polarising reviews.
Death Stranding is effectively getting its fourth chance in the gaming markets limelight, after the original PS4 release, then being ported over to PC, then the directors cut and now that Death Stranding 2 has been confirmed, I'm still so curious as to why Death Stranding is so divisive?
It's clear that some people think Death Stranding was creator Hideo Kojima continuing his legacy of being an outrageously artistic gaming visionary but others think Death Stranding was a step too far towards lunacy.

@@riotangel4701 Well new story content There’s a weapon that’s unlocked pretty early on in the game and it’s a new weapon that’s been added. There’s new gear that can be unlocked later game but make it easier to deliver packages and there’s also a gliding gear that can help getting down mountains. Racing track Extra missions New combat abilities There’s even this thing called support skeleton you can get early on it’s super useful to help prevent issues with balancing and carrying gear. Firing range A new vehicle New cosmetic items I think there’s enough here to have fun with.

Great, thorough review! I loved the gameplay of DS and wish they had pushed it even more, as I never really felt the traversal offered THAT much thinking in advance (except for BT encounters). The combat was fine and I loved the cooperative road building and online features. And who could forget the soundtrack? Trekking across the landscape on to your next destination when a haunting Low Roar track kicks in was magic. Combat was fine, especially the bola gun, as you said. Unfortunately I've never been a fan of Kojima's storytelling. In fact, I have actually never seen the very end of the game. It was like 11pm and I knew I was near the end and said screw it, lets bring it to a close, even if it means getting a little less sleep. At 1:30 in the morning, with the cut scenes STILL going I closed and deleted it. One of my gaming pet peeves is too many/too long cut scenes, and Kojima's aspirations at being a filmmaker are notorious. A real shame since it left a bad taste in my mouth. Marzipan dildo...when you need some sweet lovin.

Cheers Zane! I know exactly what you mean regarding cutscenes. Personally I love Kojima’s storytelling, even if they take an unnecessary amount of twists and turns and barely make any sense in the progress. I still find myself wanting to know where the plot is going.

Usually I love it. It's great to be able to put the controller down sometimes and take it in. Death stranding has one moment near the end on the beach though that is insufferable because it's just you sitting in the world listening to a lecture. Absolute lowest point of the game tbh

The start of Death Stranding was frustrating beyond measure, moving Sam around and having him trip over just about everything was infuriating. I angrily continued determined to find out what everyone was talking about in terms of the mixed game reviews. I was frustrated for hours until I got to Lake Knot City at which point Death Stranding opened up for me, strangely I have more than 1000 hours playtime and still haven't finished the game. Death Stranding is a good game, fixing the decaying world is a full time job (probably best left untouched until you've finished the main plot). My failure to finish is probably my fault as I have the difficulty set to very hard, extra rain (timefall) ensures that structures decay super fast, the up side is that mule camps have extra materials to rob.

I picked this up on sale in mid 2021. It sat on the shelf for a couple of months before I decided to give it a try. I almost quit in the opening hours as I was finding it incredibly tedious and boring, but I'm so glad that I stuck with it. Once the game opens up and you get more weapons and gear, it becomes so much more fun and interesting to play through. The themes of isolation, loneliness and rebuilding connections really resonated with me as the world was in lockdown at the time. I also absolutely adore the soundtrack. It's gotta be one of the best in any game ever.

Played the game just this month, and I loved it. The plot is needlessly complex, like everything else Kojima, and full of plot holes that you simply ignore because of the complexity. But it was full of emotion, and soul. The gameplay was fun, I loved navigating the complex terrain and delivering a package to a remote place for the first time. And I loved building infrastructure that would help me deliver follow up packages to said place much faster. Definitely one of the most memorable games I've ever played. Can't wait for the sequel.

Thank you so much for this video. I'd been avoiding the game since it came out because of the many reviewers calling it a boring AF "walking sim" (even though before it actually came out, I'd watched every single trailer and was massively excited for it). I happened across your video about two months ago when my husband and I were in a bit of a rut trying to figure out what game to play next. We found the director's cut on eBay for $20, and were IMMEDIATELY enthralled with it. It was like nothing else we've ever played and we both agree that it is an absolute masterpiece and quite possibly our favorite game of all time (and we've played a LOT of games haha). Now that we've done everything we can possibly do in the game (we platinumed it lol) it's left us with a sort of a hollow feeling. We tried to play three other games and nothing clicked. Finally decided to give MGSV a go, since I guess the best follow up to a Kojima game is...another Kojima game lol. It's not the same obviously, and the story is nowhere near as good as the other MG games, but the gameplay scratches the same sort of itch that DS does. But man, I can't wait for DS2. Like, please hurry Kojima. I NEED more!!! Anywho, thanks again! I have noticed on the Death Stranding subreddit that lately a lot of people have been picking up the game more and more and loving it, and that makes me really happy. It seems like the game is finally getting the recognition it deserves after such a lukewarm initial reception.

"Genius" Kojima's insult to American gamers was not only childish, it was also unfounded. At the time of his comment, and today to the best of my knowledge, Death Stranding's metacritic average was lower in Asia and Australia than it was in North America. That said, they were all in the low 80s to high 70s range.

I get the games has shortfalls. But, like you say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My reason for recently buying this game was for something different. I followed too many negative reviews. I'm only 10 hours in and would preorder the next 2 installments. It breaks the mold of his past games. Cutting edge stuff. Sure, there's areas I would improve. But, there are famous paintings I don't care for. Besides, for those fps people, there's tons of those.

I bought it on a whim cause it was on sale for $12. I found it fun for that price. Wouldn't pay full price for it cause it has it's issues. Like it takes too long for some of the best mechanics to come into play and the annoying way it takes just to deliver. Like does delivering things really need a recycled cutscene and menus that takes too long to go through? But my biggest criticism is that there is no music player during delivers. Yes, you can have structures play music. But I want music to play while driving or walking. The license music is incredible and want it to play

Kojima is absolutely correct about flying higher. I'm not a fan of his. But since I started playing this game, it was very apparent that it is as RPG as RPG can be. Lots of long cinematic cut scenes. Lots of dialogue. Lots of reading. Lots of story. Even in the menu system with messages, data, interviews unfolding the lore. This is a heavy very heavy RPG. And I have friends who represent lots and lots of users that fit that description he gave of interest in shallow shooters. They don't pay story heavy RPG. And they're playing this game complaining its bad. If you personally are not into RPGs, it does not mean the game is bad just because it's a RPG. As somebody who way more into RPGs than shallow shooters, I can say that this game is quite good. Don't approach it as a shooter game, and complain that it is bad just because it doesn't appeal to most illiterates who prefer stuff like shooters. Also, football players don't play Fifa. They play Madden. Because that's the sport they know Usually Fifa is played by soccer professionals.

I quite like it, I wish I'd played it sooner. It has a really unique and quirky feeling to it and I love the asynchronous online element. While it has some very bizarre art elements, I kind of love what they cooked up. Norman Reedus (Sam) is hilarious though in reality would be suffering from the biggest series of hernias, blisters, chafing and other ouchies you've ever seen (If not having died from palpitations from a certain energy drink). I also like the idea of it being terrible if you kill anyone and having to tip toe around not causing a voidout. If rain is death (Timefall) I'd have died years ago here in the UK considering on average it rains around 159 days of the year.

It doesn't matter if other's don't like it. It is a unique kind of game and story. Yes, it is a slow burn but gaming is expensive. You want the most experience for your money and replayability. The other day I was going full speed with one of the future trucks and plowed FULL force into two other Porters on foot. 😆Funny b/c while they didn't die each one only got me 100 Dislikes. Game is fire but the text is so small, EEC on large. I have a big screen on the wall and ended with my glasses in straining…Think in going to just watch the cutscenes on KZbin, the story is amazing but i have a headache now lol

Played a few hours and then the game banned my PSN account for weeks. I will never play a game online again. Graphics were amazing, but I'm not into the planning aspect. Seems like it would be impossible without online help, but I'm not taking the chance of being banned again.

It's similar to Shawshank Redemption for the box office disasters when released after people's read the movie negative reviews from film critics because they expect Shawshank Redemption just like others prison movie.. but today,it ranked at #1 in IMBD and became a must watch movie before we die.. Death Stranding = Shawshank Redemption

Utterly brilliant game. Actually, I loved wandering the landscape; made me reminisce of my youth, hill walking over the hills and mountains of Wales, basking in the solitude. Not for everyone, sure. Fortunately, I give, zero shits about that 😉 Also, agree with Kojima: American's attention span is the size of a wilting sardine. If it ain't throwing action at them, their arses pucker up and they need to shoot something...

I gave up on it after about 2 hours. In that two hours i must have 'played' the game for about ten or fifteen minuets. the rest of the time was spent in cutscenes! Seriously; I ran down a hill to a cut scene, ran further down the hill to another cutscene that lead into an interactive cut scene that allowed me to look around form the back of a truck. THEN I got out I think, walked a few steps and YET ANOTHER LONG AF cutscene kicked in, that showed me to have a creepy ass baby down my neck! Follow this with yet another cut scene that introduced me to some other characters and I'd simply had enough and jacked in. What i did get from it though was that it was very Japanese. That's not meant to sound how it does. But it's very much like other Japanese games and anima with crazy outlandish concepts that make bugger all sense and take too much effort to accept. I'll give it another go though. Picking up boxes and shoving them into a massive tower on my back and walking about the place should be fun, right?

I never played it but I’m willing to give it a fair shot. My guesses is that it’s heavily story driven because the running around looks a bit dull.

It’s not just running around the movement and gear on here makes it way more fun than just “running” you literally can equip strong cyberlegs to carry more packages in one go or speed cyberlegs to just simply move and jump faster and that ain’t even all people just say the movement looks boring because they’re small minded and don’t see cars with big open highways it’s literally an apocalyptic america with rain that speeds up the aging process of every material from human skin to the toughest steel and when anyone dies they turn into a nuke and leave a huge crater a normal vehicle with normal concrete highways would never survive in those conditions IMO kojima’s games always have had the most entertaining movement and gear on foot out of any other game franchise even metal gear solid has fun superhuman movement and gear

Who'd a thunk different people would like different things? The best review is one which explains exactly what the game is, without the reviewer's personal opinion, because - and I know this is difficult for a lot of people to believe - some of us will love games, and movies, and books, and television shows, and paintings, and music, and all sorts of other works of art, which some of us won't. *_Death Stranding is neither a good game nor a bad game; it's just a game._* I loved it, but I can certainly understand why some people didn't. What's the problem? Once upon a time there was no KZbin, and you had to rely on reviews in magazines - which often led to large sums of money being wasted on a game you didn't like - but nowadays you can sign up to a subscription service which will offer you more games than you could possibly play, and you can watch 20 reviews, and some gameplay, and often play a trial. We are so spoilt these days...

I started playing it when it first got released (received as a gift), and I hated it ..never touched it since..and I honestly thought that everyone hated it too...considering some of the overwhelmingly positive comments, I might give it another chance ...I just hope there is more than just fetching quests where you'll constantly trip over everything ...

Nah there isn't really. The game's strength is making the traversal of the world be an active aspect of the gameplay loop rather than the inconvenient time sink between the fun bits of a usual open world game.
@rotoocold3444
@rotoocold3444 Жыл бұрын
One way to stop the tripping from happening just hold right and left triggers at all times idk what it is if you’re on pc but as long as you do that the falling will happen very rarely anytime I actually fall is when I’m running down a steep slope and got too much weight on my back but that’s avoidable also if you tap the grip button in time the movement isn’t as straight to the point with this game and that’s what drives people away and bring some people in
