@BreatheEasyRRT
@BreatheEasyRRT 5 жыл бұрын
I ended up going with the Classic III recently and have noticed a world of difference in breath sounds! I wish I would have had it during clinical honestly. If you want to splurge on a stethoscope and have the means to do so, go for it! Just make sure to get it engraved or keep an eye on it. They are super easy to get set down in the rush of a code.

@@BreatheEasyRRT thank you so much! I definitely don't want to walk into our hospital during my rotations and get a look from full-time healthcare providers because I have the master cardio. My friend is going for her BSN and she said they are require to have a double sided chest piece, but I don't think I do. I start my first clinical rotation in May, and I've been riding a 4.0 gpa to get there. I'm not going to be hard on myself if I can't maintain it, I just want to get through and take as much as I can from the experience. From what my program director says, by the time her students graduate (usually 5-8 students), they are all "claimed" by offers they have taken. I really want to do the travel RT. I'm not sure what the requirements are for that. Could you share some information on being a "travel" respiratory therapist, maybe the requirements if you know them? I'm young, gay, and have no plans to settle down soon, so I'm willing to go where the job takes me haha
@BreatheEasyRRT
@BreatheEasyRRT 5 жыл бұрын
A dual sided chest piece may be beneficial for pediatric patients once you get to that rotation . From what I understand most travel agencies require 2 years of experience because more often than not, your orientation as a traveler is extremely short (just a few days) so they want to make sure you're proficient before throwing you into uncharted territory. That being said, that doesn't mean you can't apply for jobs as a new grad in areas you might be interested in living after you graduate. Good luck!!

I am 45 and just got back to school majoring in Nursing. I am a CNA/HHA. It comes to the point that I am thinking how long I can still work this super busy and hard field specially if I am in my 50s? How long I can clean people's butt? How long I can still able to take them in the bathroom or do ADLs? Can my back still be okay? Since I injured my back from my almost 300 bls patient a year ago. Now I am interested to change my major to RT since RT you are no longer to clean poops, doing ADL, etc. When your an RN you still do what the CNA's does. I can see myself working till 65 years old as an RT. I am shifting my major this coming Fall. Hope this can help you.

I was in a similar situation, I am also a medic and was toying with the idea initially of doing the RT program, but ultimately I decided on nursing because I think it has more options for moving up and doing not patient care jobs, or just changing areas when you get bored. I do vascular access nursing and really like it, it's unlike most nursing jobs because you don't have to do a lot of the grunt work and you don't have a load of patients to worry about, just one patient at a time!! I HATED nursing and had serious regrets until I found my niche in VAT nursing!! I have a friend who went the RT route and he got burnt out pretty quick and had limited options when it came to change.

I think RT is harder, I am a nursing student and we have RT at my school and speaking with the students they need to know way more about the respiratory system and all the meds, which we only needed to know a handful and how to give proper education on how to use them. I am currently now in my 5th quarter of nursing and this is our critical care rotation, and this we learn all the trauma and ARDS being one of them so right now we are learning about mechanics ventilation and PEEP. I think with the COVID-19 right now it helps our learning on this. I mean the ventilators are your guys but we have to learn how to adjust settings and assess when things aren’t right in emergent situations. But yes both great careers and yes you are going to have to work your butt off. I’m just happy this is my last didactic quarter and then I do my preceptorship for my 6th and I’m done, December 2020 I can’t wait

Congratulations on almost being done! Yes, we both specialize in different things, we spend a minimum of 2 years learning all about the cardiopulmonary system and mechanical ventilation. There is so much more to MV than just changing rates and tidal volumes. RTs can tell exactly what is going on with the lungs just by looking at scalars on the vent 💗 RNs and RTs make the best team for sure!

@BreatheEasyRRT
@BreatheEasyRRT 6 жыл бұрын
The BSRT is being pushed to become the entering degree so a lot of people are getting it before that happens so they don't have to go back to school later. Also if you are planning on going into management, research or teaching in the future you may need a bachelor's degree. If you aren't thinking about moving in that direction an associate's is the general requirement to work as an RT.
@miranda725
@miranda725 5 жыл бұрын
BSRT can be limiting since it is specifically for respiratory. If the program is BSRT then that's okay but I wouldn't recommend getting a BSRT separately. Oklahoma doesn't pay more for bachelor degrees.

Ok so I'm torn between dental hygienist career and Respiratory therapist? Any feed back... Any cons that you can think of? What's a couple of ways that I can stand out amongst other applicants as I heard it's competitive, say - if I did ekg/ phlebotomy/ mult- skill tech training or get my associate degree in science- AAS... Or EMT... I've found free and low cost online classes for respiratory therapy and copd and patient care and lung functions and lung cancer...Some are non credited but from prestigious University's.... I'm just trying to go the extra mile and my last question Is - I'm going to be 40 years old soon, is RT judgemental aganist someone my age and if not , is this something I can do till my 60s - as I would be about 44- 45 when all said and done....

Hey Jeff! There is much more excitement in RT than dental hygiene. If you work in a hospital as a therapist there is quite a bit of walking and movements as well as rolling heavy equipment around which can take a toll on the body after time. If you are concerned about it being hard on your body there are also PFT labs, education and sleep labs you could look into working at. Any extra training will help you stand out especially if it is clinical related. I had quite a few classmates that had people 40+ years of age in them that didn't have issues finding a job and the same for the class below me. If you are willing to work and know your stuff, you wont have a problem.

@bettysmith4527
@bettysmith4527 11 ай бұрын
I would go RT route, a couple of my friends are dental hygienist and they have a LOT of neck issues from constantly being in the same position all day, and also they have trouble finding full time jobs at dental offices for insurance. Many dental hygiene jobs are part time so the office doesn't have to provide health insurance! Forget getting EKG and phlebotomy training, that is a waste of money as most hospitals will do on the job training for that. Your best bet would be trying to get as many of the general ed classes done before you matriculate into a program, so classes like English comp, psychology, A and P etc. Focus on getting excellent grades in those classes and having a majority done, that is what the admissions folks are looking for!

Well, as a clinical med assistant I can’t really decide between this two program? Both are fine, but RT usually a faster program and with nurse you could possibly become a nurse practitioner. But I think with RT I hear you can be a physician assistant. So anyway, both path are great but difficult for me to decide 😥! Someone help!

You are right but the program lengths are the same. They are both a minimum of an associate degree but you can find accelerated programs for either. I would make a list of pros and cons. Fill it with things you like and dislike about each profession and see what really resonates. Is there anything you absolutely can't deal with or a must have that is in one hut not the other? Good luck!

I was a medical assistant for 3 years before I got into the respiratory therapy program. You should see what classes if any could transfer such as anatomy and physiology. Being a medical assistant hasn’t helped me with respiratory classes but has helped me as far as interacting with patients where other students who has never dealt with patients had a harder time.
