I don't know how somebody would read danaher's post and think danaher is somehow saying we should stop teaching the americana. He is stating that the americana is a powerfull armlock, but the setups aren't that great these days.

I bet it just has been abandoned, neglected, not kept up with the rest of the sport. I hit them from like a 1/2 north south 1/2 mount with their wrist in my arm pit. I pull up so they don't have so much a base. It works. Or I just use them from bottom to make space or reversals

Yep he show multiple Americana setups from positions like rear triangl in his back attacks instructional

If I was 16 and was able to, I would fly out and try to work as an apprentice in Catch Wrestling with Raul. Catch seems to always have a hard-nosed solution to so many BJJ attacks. I love the head lock where you move the guy's head with your knuckle into his fleshless cheek area to 90 to the side and then lock on with a shoulder, an arm or whatever. Crack!

If anyone suggests such a high percentage submission be forgotten, it would show the foolish side of that man. High Percentage? How can I say that when John Danaher says.... The chance of you coming across someone with ANY Jiu Jitsu is very low. This is such an easy sub to land that beginners nail it. This speaks to the movement’s efficiency. Of course if one’s only focus is micro-laser focused on the top 15 Black Belts in the world, one’s focus is very narrow and they are not thinking about serving the general public with their daily self defense needs. All styles of arm entanglement should be learned...standing and on the ground. Duh. ☝️🤼♂️👍⚔️👊❤️💪🥊🙏🤸♂️🥇

I think the top wrist lock is extremely effective. Most of the escapes won't work if you apply with it a wrist lock, making the forearm muscles weak, the elbow placed out of position & the arm completely weakened. Kind of like using a toehold & bending the leg tight to make the whole leg weak for use as a lever. Same with the Hammerlock & Double Wrist Lock. A lot more people would use these moves if they knew to try to go for the hands, extra leverage etc. This is catch wrestling stuff, but maybe not really considered a big deal in other grappling arts i feel. I think doing these things is considered grabbing gloves in MMA and banned. IDK how it works anymore.

A simple but effective catch counter that I learned from Larry Hartsell, is push on the tricep with your free hand as you roll to the side that is about to be locked.

Guys, Danaher's vid clip was on the Kimura, not the Americana. In Kimura the opponent forearm starts pointing to 6 o'clock. In Americana it starts pointing at 12 o'clock.

Notice how Raul does *not* pin the wrist. This is part of the "secret". The other part is using your elbows and not your hands to create the trap. In fact, you can have your hands open and pointing to the ceiling. Henry Akins has the ninja scroll on this.
@Thejester23943 жыл бұрын
Works good from a topside crucifix or if you have a lapel trapping their shoulder

I love the fact that you have BJJ represented often. Respect on both sides is awesome. Love grappling in general.
@BreathingGuy206 жыл бұрын
Also, if you as a Catch wrestler, are going to use the Americana on anyone, bjj or not, always use pain and pressure. By that I mean is to use the tip of your elbow and drive into his jawbone or his eye socket. A lot of the times I see Catch Wrestlers go thru their rolling and forget about pain and pressure. I'm not sure why that is.

I have a question. I have no experience in catch. But as I understand it, you can win by pinning your opponent. My question is that since you need to pin the shoulders to perform a better Americana, wouldn’t you have won already by pin?

I think most grapplers dont understand the idea of using your ribs as weapon to really make someone uncomfortable. When applied right yoh can make most non wrestling based and wrestling based grapplers tap or knock from the pressure alone. All your really doing is ridding a guy and making him carry all your weight times gravity. Great video Thank you both for your response and perspectives. C.A.C.C
@prairiekasey75936 жыл бұрын
Great video love the technique! One of my favorites. I feel like one reason that people do not use the techniques they learned at the beginning level because they are constantly getting tapped blocked or countered trying to pull these moves of with a white belts speed and technical proficiency and over time I feel like you associate that constant failure with the move. And it's only as you get more experience and actually start to win spars that you start to associate certain moves with victory. For example when I first started grappling I always used back mount RNC and leg takedowns. But after I was getting dominated so much trying to pull off these moves I would switch to the newer moves I was learning and without realizing it I had let go off my fundamental techniques and it wasn't until I started trying them again at my new skill level that I realize why these were fundamentals to my game.
@juntjoonunya92165 жыл бұрын
Yeah me too. all my moves are basically blue belt level. I bet every move, no matter how basic, has been used at the top by some master as their main move(s). I just like to learn new moves before I perfect anything. I prefer a variety to start with rather than only a couple I do super well. Just my style. Jack of all, master of none. But I can always go into my collection of moves and pick something to improve.
@KnownAsCLH6 жыл бұрын
At 6:35 what about going under the top guys left arm and going for a reverse around the head with a bridge or even as the BJJ guy said go for a 2 on 1 and fight for wrist/hand control. I feel that the basics of wrestling can be used so much more than technical set ups of BJJ that seem to always be situational and rarely allowing one to force an opponent into a position where they are not comfortable.

I respect and love John Danaher but I use the Americana all the time when I’m controlling and attacking from cross side and I use it against BJJ practitioners of all levels. And as we see in this video, it is also effectively used by Catch Wrestlers as well. The submission works when set up and done properly.

Thing is I just want to say I’m glad that you guys are Sharing stuff those are all really good techniques, but when you get with really high-level people it doesn’t work. I think a lot of them could work most of the time probably 75% for sure but when you’re trying to do really good techniques for that position I always try to go for a 95 or higher percentage. OK I want to tell you guys I have a different way of doing it which I can do on every single person and I can catch it from different ways I would like to know how I do it please let me know. Because I’ll get your wrist luck I’ll break the wrist the forearm and shoulder! The thing is another thing the teacher always your monkey paw but that’s not the best way, they also don’t explain sitting on the other side of that arm because they don’t bridge me off. They don’t do anything they can’t do a full straight arm because now it’s really screwed over. But there’s some different kinds of ideas and the reason why I did mine as I do catch Wrestling I do Jujitsu and I do Hapkido so I use wrist locks

I don't think it's very effective at blue and above. Too easy to defend.

I'm no expert, not even close but I watched a lot of matches and see high level guys get caught with basics. I used to think some of the simple stuff we do as beginners will never work on anyone with any amount experience and then you see Bucheca get caught with a cross collar choke and Gracie in a wrist lock ect.. I'm sure other factors like speed ,timing and setups, fatigue and wutnot are into play but still basic moves. Anyway didn't mean to rant, I don't have cable TV and this stuff is awesome. I don't discount anything anymore.
