I LOVE RE-FRIED BEANS!!! My wife is Texican and she makes these beans about once a week. She fries them in bacon grease for extra flavor and lessens the salt needed. She also chops up the onion half that was not used in the boiling process, and uses it in the frying process. The house smells so good while they are cooking (slow boil, her total time is about 4 hrs), that I keep stealing little bowls throughout the cooking process. Add some of her home-made tortillas and who needs anything else? (Maybe a cold beer!) Thank you for this. :D

Dear Alma, I was born and raised in San Jose, California and this is the first most authentic way I have seen to make refried beans. Your last comment about your daughter truly got to my heart as my son is so spoiled with spending $12 a day on Taco Bell, and those delicious bean burrito's your daughter makes with these beans are probably only 25 cents a piece at the most after you include gas stove, oil, cheese, and rent. LOL God bless you and your familia!!!

Your video means alot to me. My mom always told me that there were weeks when she was a k8d, where her family didn't eat anything but beans and rice. She lived in a family of six, an older sister, older brother, younger sister, and mom and dad. Even though the family pitched in, they still struggled alot and they were pretty poor. They make the most amazing beans, but I never learned how to make them. After watching your video I was able to learn how my family got by. It's such a small thing, and you won't look at this, but I appreciate it so much. Thank you.

Jordan Payne I am so so glad that it means a lot to you and I am able to show people how to make beans because I came from the same background as your mom. I have 10 siblings and I grew up poor and the only thing I ate was beans and tortillas. I realized so many people didn't know how to make beans but they are so simple, good for you, and there are so many things you can do with them.

My mom made the best beans, God rest her soul, she has since passed on! She would rinse the beans, and let them soak over night ( to get white in color). For r,refried beans (we would have for breakfast), she would fry bacon, and used the bacon grease in the refried beans. OMG! The beans were so good!

Anything you cook with bacon would taste "the best", of course. What most people don't understand is beans have a smooth, mild flavour, which of course wil be completely overpowered by the strong, greasy flavor of the bacon. Also, you don't need to soak them overnight for "whiteness". If you cook them right, dry, without overnight soaking, you still will be able to get them "white"

@@sandrawaller4344 That's exactly the reason to soak them. It doesn't change the texture or taste, it changes how you smell the next day. ;-) But they aren't toxins, either. They are enzymes many people don't breakdown in the gut fully.

Very good recipe and instruction, thank you. I lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico some time ago. I heard a story from a friend of mine about some fancy nutritionist coming to New Mexico about 1920 or so, before New Mexico became a state. He supposed he would see lots of evidence of malnutrition. What he saw was a thriving community who ate beans and rice regularly; this is a perfect protein. They also ate a lot of vegetables in season and some meat, chicken and fish, but in moderation because it was hard to come by. I still love making a really good rice and beans recipe, wonderful for breakfast, lunch or dinner!

OMyGosh YUM ! I made these Beans last night for dinner ! 😋😍😍😍👍👍👍But I cooked the beans in my Instant Pot 35mins ur 1/2lb Dry pintos & 3-1/2cups water on Manual 35mins w- Quick Release. I used the 1/2 white onion (It was all I had) & I added 2 cloves garlic tossed the onion out. & instead of corn oil I used bacon grease & infused the other 1/2 of the onion then tossed the onion out & added the beans & their broth & smashed & cooked down ..... They Were Sooooo YUMMY Thank u soooo Much for ur recipe. I look for recipes I can cook in my IPot ( Instant pot ) ( electric Pressure cooker ). So ur beans I was able to cook in 1 Hour Total & only had to stand over the stove for 15mins IF That 😊👍thank u again this is nice my Favirite Refried Beans. Easy instructions, thanks. I don't use onion at all. I let them boil usually for more than 4 hours and a VERY SLOW FIRE. Definitively use more water. I use vegetable oil for frying, NOT LARD, as many people argue. I hate the taste of using lard. If they are well fried they taste delicious with oil.

Thx for the vid. I always like to cook them in a pressure cooker with 1 diced onion, 1 diced Bell Pepper, Salt, Pepper, Onion Salt, Garlic Powder. If that sounds TexMex.., guilty, I am from Texas. You can make extra and put them in the freezer for later. Leave'm like they are for a soup or stew, or smash'm for refried beans where you can then add jalopeno flavoring with chili lime. Goes great in a chicken, steak, bean burrito.

Thank you. Nothing better than the beans made at home. Some places still make their own beans, while many restaurants doctor up canned. One of my favorite breakfast, juevos rancheros! Always with jalapenos. :)

I agree with others - this is probably the most authentic recipe out there. (It tastes almost like the great refried beans at La Hacienda.) Yes you could have added cilantro, spices, lard etc but why ?

Thank you!! One of the best videos I have seen on you tube! My beans came out great. Tasty, I did not add onion because I didn't have. I added chili flakes and garlic. Soooo good!!! Other recipes always say to soak overnite, I rinsed my beans then cooked as you showed.

I always count my beans before cooking them. You need to make sure there are only 239 beans in the pot. Not one more or they will be 240 (too farty). Heh Heh Heh.
