Finally a video that showed what I wanted to see, restoration for use. I have several vintage grinders but wondered about being able to grind meat for consumption and or preserving. Mine are not in bad shape nor completely rusty. Thanks for the tips on the BKF and food grade mineral oil.

Thanks for making this video. I have several old rusty grinders because I like cast iron, but have decided to use one to help with the grocery bill. Esp appreciated the clean up and which products to use. I bought a gallon of food grade mineral oil when I've made a lot of end grain cutting boards for gifts. Now I have another use for it. BKF is also a great product. Love you showing how easy it is to make sausage, and even using a mortar and pestel. I have my great grandmother's cast iron dutch oven, amazing that it's still as good as new. Love these old cast iron items, and even the new ones.

Great video! My grandparents have two old grinders we use to make sausage from deer meat each fall, adding pork fat, sage, cayenne, and a dash off garlic and salt. The deep freeze is never empty!

Great video, I really appreciate that you are using the grinder. I like the food grade mineral oil recommendation, I learned something new. One of my favorite recipes is cranberry relish, super simple, (1) 12 oz. bag of cranberries, (1) navel orange, (1) apple, sweetened to taste. Grind everything up including the orange skins and minus the apple cores, mix it all up and add a little sweetener. The original recipe called for a cup of sugar, but I use Stevia and a little agave syrup.

I make a lot of my own sausages and bacon. Nothing like the taste and the feeling you get when you do it yourself.

Helpful hint, store all parts that will fit in gallon size zip lock bag with a bag of cheap rice will help prevent rust between usage.

This was excellent! I just received my vintage Griswold grinder today and cleaned it up. I can't wait to use it in a bit to grind up some beef. Thank you for sharing this.

Those extra cutters are probably for a universal brand chopper. They are very prevalent. They also made a spout for that grinder so you could use it as a sausage stuffer.

My KitchenAid stand mixer has a grinder attachment that I use to make my own sausage. It is a little labor-intensive, but it isn’t too bad if you do it in bulk like you did. I really enjoy cooking them on my cast iron griddle before freezing them for storage. Best of all is knowing EXACTLY what’s going into my food. I just hate that we live in a time when we can’t trust food companies to have our best interest in mind, but only care about profits for the shareholders. Sorry for the rant. Thank you for sharing this video with us!

I used to use my food grinder a lot when I was cooking for my family. I had an old one that my mother used for years. Don't use it much any more as I don't really cook much. It was a money saver when I ground my own pork and beef.

Just to satisfy my curiosity I looked for meat grinders on Etsy. There were a surprising number of Griswold models for cheap. My own grinder is a #2 Universal which has worked well for many years. Sometimes the old-tech stuff is hard to beat.

My grandmother used one to grind up soap (which she made) to wash clothes. And she used one of those washing machine that had the wringer and she would manually change the water. The good old days.

I just picked up this exact grinder from Goodwill ($10). It only has the second smallest attachment and the meat grinding blade, but I can count the rust spots on one hand.

Thank you for this helpful video pulling one off the shelf that was bought at a garage sale years ago. How would you alter the set up for just squishing the pits out of say some hawthorn berries? Do you still use the blade? The goal would be to have the purée come through without swishing up breaking up the seeds.

I have a GRISWOLD NO 2 and it seems to be missing the little piece that you inserted under the disc. The square shaped piece. Will the grinder work correctly without that? Thanks, you did a great job cleaning that one up and the sandwich looked great!
@andrewpietras85934 жыл бұрын
I believe the other blades that did not belong to that grinder were for a L.F. & C grinder. Great restore and sandwich!

My partner and I found a Griswold No11 meat grinder we are wondering if the Griswold grinders were all castiron or if we should be concerned about aluminum. I figured it was worth an ask. Thanks!

New subscriber here; apologies if this has been covered in another video. What makes Bar Keepers Friend a better option than something like Comet? Genuinely loving your range of content/cast iron.
@castironchaos Жыл бұрын
Bar Keepers Fruiend contains a mild acid called acetic acid, which helps to remove rust as well as clean the pan.

@@castironchaos thank you! I figured with the range of your collection this was a choice made with purpose. The food grade mineral oil ("found in the laxative section") was an inspired pro-tip as well. Combined materials cost less than $10.

I've got an 1899 lfc food chopper. I love using it, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to keep it from rusting after cleaning! I've considered seasoning it the way I would a cast iron pan, but am nervous to do anything with this over 100 year old antique without knowing more. Would love some tips!

My tip use grapeseed oil it doesn't go rancid that's what I use on my mincer you can also use it on wooden chopping boards

Hi. What do you know about a GEMFOOD CHOPPER 20? I found one in my garage. It's in about the same shape as yours here. Is it worth trying to fix it up?
@castironchaos Жыл бұрын
Well, according to Google that grinder dates to around the 1890s and was made by Sargent & Co., which is still around today as Sargent Quality Tools. So if you want to take the time to clean it up and use it, it means you'll have a working made-in-the-USA antique.
@ricksorber9562 Жыл бұрын
@@castironchaos it doesn't have the rotating knife like most of the ones I've seen on here. The perforated disc turns with the handle and auger. I'm gonna scrub on it some more and then see if I can wash the smell away. What do you do after you wash it so it doesn't rust in storage? Would you oil it?

If you're thinking about doing this don't be scared like I was. After seeing that amazing cleaner, I knew I couldn't afford it if I could even be find it. Then I saw that Dollar General has it for less than $3. Now there's no reason not to clean the grinder that's been in my garage for probably 40 or 50 years.
