in this episode of restoring Auto Alex's classic BMW E30 Touring (Roger), we continue to strip the car (so we don't set fire to it when welding) and we finally get on to repairing thr rusty floor. Rofer has a lot of rust which required attention so we have a lot of work ahead of us.

I really think Alex needs to be getting his hands dirty with this one so he can feel the pain and appreciate Roger just that little bit more. Invite him down for cuppa tea and hand him a welder and see how it goes 😂

I can see why butt welding panels is better than over-lapping panels. Over-lapping panels allows water to get in between the metal and rust starts there quickly... Thumbs Up

Why would you not want it better than stock, especially for something that isn't visible? Those bungs are just for draining fluid out when the shell is dipped in production, they serve no other purpose other than being excellent at trapping moisture and rusting.

Beats me why they don't bother to cut out the rotten areas before welding in new metal !
@AJB1
@AJB1 9 ай бұрын
I guess it's quicker/easier/cheaper. You don't need to carefully cut the patch to exactly the right size, you don't need to carefully hold it in exactly the right place. Just lay a bigger bit of metal over the top and weld around it. If it's a bodge repair to get the car through one or two more MOTs then fair enough. If it's being restored and meant to last, then it's just making a bigger repair for later when the patch and the original both rust quickly.

They are the same deal on the E34, which I have partially restored. They rot round the edges so you have to enlarge the hole to get rid of the rust, consequently the bung plates won't go back in. Also, I have never known anyone want to take one out again, so it is easier just to blank them off, no seam to rot out in the future.
