Often ridiculed following its debut in the turbulent 1970s, the AMC Pacer’s radical interpretation of a compact car has since accomplished an impressive feat-it’s become a legitimate cult classic. One part of its shocking design included a large amount of glass to make the car both look and feel bigger, which is something Chip Foose reimagines as a custom delivery van.

LOVE IT .Chip! I had a 74 Matador. Traded a 72 Vega for it! After the Teflon coating wore off the Vegas engine walls, it got only 100 miles to the quart of oil. The only car my wife ever agreed on during our" 17;year marriage. That car was comfortable and fast. I’ve had multiple AMC cars, and they were great cars, under rated, mostly 6 cylinders. Still drive a JEEP with a 4.0 cylinder(242 c.i.).

Chip, appreciate your rendition of AMC's Pacer. Having owned 5 Pacers, 3 coupes and 2 wagons I always had trouble with the lines around the back window area. The wagons look I like is super cool. and works better as a hauler. The widows go completely down into the door with the indoor panel rising up above the window line. So with the window down your arm is actually "up" ont op of the indoor panel. the door handle is a good change as the stock handle could be difficult opening up the big heavy door. and the passenger door is about a little over one inch wider on the passenger side. keep the glass stock, as the front windshield is massive. some models could be had with wing windows! wagons had rear as stock as well as front wings. I drive with windows down and inside as you drive hiway speeds I found little to not wind buffeting from inside. the pacer is that wide that the riders are in a sort of quite zone. My executive Pacer was bronze in color so thanks for taking on the Pacer!

I love the look of those classic AMC door handles, unfortunately I never had the pleasure (or pain) of opening one. I imagine it's quite awkward and cumbersome, but it looks cool. Seems aerodynamic too.
@falcon664
@falcon664 4 жыл бұрын
@@Keranu Operating the door handles is no more awkward than any other type. It is easy because you pull the handle and the door opens in one move. Easy to get used to. They are aerodynamic, flush with the body and the lock is recessed.
@Keranu
@Keranu 4 жыл бұрын
@@falcon664 I was concerned with wrist positioning when opening the door. I guess if you're using the right hand on the driver side door it wouldn't matter so much, but might still cause some tension on the wrist. I can't help but think of these things because my wrists suck, even after lifting weights. They do look so cool and aerodynamic though, I have wondered why more cars haven't implemented a similar design. The closest we have today is Tesla.
@falcon664
@falcon664 4 жыл бұрын
@@Keranu Thanks for the reply, Keranu, that is an interesting point to consider. I am assuming the the wrist issue involves rotation. In that case, to open you would have your arm in a straight line from elbow to fingers, (like offering a handshake). Put fingers behind the paddle and pull the arm straight back toward you and the door opens. There is no wrist movement necessary. Ford had a semi-recessed handle that you had to pull up, I found that more difficult as you had to turn the hand palm up and pull the handle out and upward.

The design engineers and executives followed it as it traveled the assembly line. As soon as we saw it eyes began to roll and every worker start laughing their asses off. They got so made at us, OMG. You could hear laughing as it entered every station. We all joked and said this is the POS that’s going to keep us working? We’re done.

We had a '75 about the same color as the one in the upper left of Chip's pictures. Coming home from church at night I would be curled up in the back staring out the huge hatchback window at the stars. It made for a great moving observatory. :) It was also low and wide and took corners like a champ. Few also know that the drivers side door is not the same size at the passenger side, one side allows easier access to the back seat.

I have never been fond of the Pacer, but the elements that you used keep a lot of the AMC design style, with some good twists. The tail light across the back showed up in the Eagle and Spirit and Concord styles from the early-mid eighties, and slimming it down and adding the chrome trim keeps it "retro futuristic" and adding the Camaro bumper in the rear and up front goes along the same lines. The style of the wheels mixed the early 70's Javelin hubcaps and the Matchbox looking hubcaps of the Eagle nicely, and I thing that is pretty close to the gold color my '86 Eagle wagon had. Mr. Foose you are one heck of an artist! Those changes would look great on a Gremlin or Spirit, too!

The Pacer was my moms and mother-in-law’s favorite car. The both said they would buy it again if they came out with a new version. You just sent mommy car to the sports shop. Love it!

As weird as the Pacer seems, its design actually predates features of many modern vehicles of today; low hood, shaved door handles, doors that got into the roof, aggressive “tumble home (the slope of the sides as they reach for the roofline) - even rack and pinion steering! Originally designed for a rotary engine sourced from GM, the cancellation of that engine formed AMC into one compromise after another, but from a design perspective, its a landmark vehicle. Glad to see Chip Foose recognizes that.

Mr. Foose, directly from the rendering room. Way better than a gremlin render. I'd of brought one of these if it was offered like this. Great Scott!

I always thought the Pacer was mistreated and dismissed as a failure, when it had so much unusual character already baked in. Good on Chip for taking the plunge along with any heat from 'custom snobs' who would rather poo poo this as a base for a cool ride than open their minds to it's potential. Now all we need is an episode of Overhaulin where this car comes to life.

Looks pretty good. I remember seeing a modified Pacer in 77 or so with a filled rear window. Pacer was really liked by lots of people. Wheelchair users really loved the wide doors- easy to get the chair in and out! Go ahead if you want, Chip... BUT... No LS. 401 AMC!

Yep, Dad had one and it was gutless. We lived in Alaska and one day he slapped chains on the rear wheels (lots of snow that day) and we went up the side of a mountain. Not much after that he got an AMC Gremlin. AMC put out some nice muscle too. For you young guys that don't know, check out the 1968-1972 AMC AMX and AMC Javelin.

My buddy in high school had his mom's Pacer to go to school. I had a bunch of rides in it. Was okay and it got looks. His dad had a 66 Ambassador. That was a great car too. They always bought AMC. I'd love to see this car finished.

You are correct that the windows did not drop completely down but AMC solved your elbow problem in a rather unique way. The interior door trim was raised to compensate where the glass was above the door. One could still comfortably leave their elbow rest on the door as they drove. Wish more manufacturers did this today.

LOL, Truth be told, we " owned " a brown Pacer hatchback when I was a teen. My eldest brother ( LOL ) attempted to teach me to drive with it. It was a stick and the driving lesson was enhanced with difficulty because it was like manuevering a tank. Even then I recall asking myself ' why ' does this car have so much interior volume for a so-called small car. The doors were thick, heavy and long. It's center of gravity was decent due to it's width. Even though the body roll was like a 747 banking for a landing. It held the road good. But it could not escape reality that it looked like a Chevy Chevette with water retention issues. LOL. Even with all it's " design oddities " it was fun to have had a hands on encounter with it. AMC Pacer, may you rest in pieces.

To me, (a non-artistic fellow) it's nothing short of a pure religious experience to observe someone take a pencil, some paper, & effortlessly free-hand a masterpiece, the likes of which Michelangelo himself would be awestruck upon witnessing. This Foose fella is an absolute savant when it comes to creating resto-mod cars on paper, then turning paper imagery into an actual jaw droppingly beautiful machine! Very few people in this world posses brilliance at this level. My gaawwwdd...

I had a 1978 Pacer wagon with a 304 V8 (we won’t talk about the woodgrain). That year they added several inches of eggcrate grille in front of the radiator to make the front look better (maybe later Teague told the Dodge Dakota team to try that). If you wanted to a Pacer as a sedan delivery, that 1978 wagon would be a much better starting point. ps. I also had a Pontiac Astre “Kammback” sedan delivery. As a tradesman I used both vehicles for work, and would do so again.
