Rett and Katina travel to Rethymno Crete to discover why Crete has the best food in Greece. The Crete culture is centered around food and there is so much great produce in Crete. We dine with renowned chef Michalis Hasikos at his resteraunt, Hasika, and guests from our favorite producers in Crete. Hasika is known as one of the best restaurants in Crete as they serve modern Greek food while also holding true to traditional greek food. We also visit the Tsounati olive grove of Efkrato to harvest olives for their high phenolic olive oil as well as visit Iliana Milihin at her winery.

@@becoming_greek you sure have for me! I am a Serb in Australia, who LOVES Greece!! I would love it if you could also link websites or details of the local businesses/producers that you feature, if you can. thanks. Beautiful content and cinematography in your videos. Katina, you really make me hungry when you eat with such happiness and joy - would this count as "kefi"? 🤩

My wife and I just enjoyed an evening of watching most all of your videos exploring multiple Greek islands and locations. What a sweet and very well done collection of slice-of-life videos! Such a nice job of editing for engaging flow and great job of balancing audio. And the videography was excellent! From one pro to another: kudos! :-)

Thank you! It’s what I do. I have a small video production company in America called Masters of Visual Arts (MOVA).. I do go back a couple of times a year for some big consecutive projects and then executive producing/ creative directing the other stuff while I’m here and focusing on this as much as I can in free time. Where are you based?

Kefi comes from the heart with passion for every thing in life. We are lucky to have quite a few of the Tsounates olive trees on our property. With loving care they have a habit of producing olives in abundance every other year. We also try to grow our own vegetables at home however with the ever increasing temperatures the last few years it has become quite difficult but depending on the microclimate of the area we have seen certain crops thriving while others have failed. No chemicals, we know what we eat, however the EU has recently passed legislation forbidding home growing. This is what we in Rethymno consider illegal. As friendly and open as the Cretan community is they will defend their way of life of self preservation when outsiders step in to alter what they have lived with for generations.

Wait… the EU is saying that you can’t home grow what exactly?

In my opinion, (and I have travelled a lot of the Greek Islands the past 30 years) it is not Crete that has the best food in Greece, but Ikaria. Ikaria is a Blue Zones. Which means the people there live to the the oldest in the world. That has a lot to do with the food of course. The food is not only very healthy but also very, VERY delicious.
@becoming_greek
@becoming_greek 6 ай бұрын
Ikaria is certainly on our list! Katina's parents have spend a good amount of time there as have many friends. If you talk to Cretans, many of the villages there have centurians, just like Ikaria and there are many similarities in this. The things that Crete has learned lately about how to take the ancient knowledge and improve upon it, along with their produce really makes Crete quite special. Also beacuse they are situated in a way to cultivate all of the produce that they need is quite unique and beyond what other Greek islands are able to do. Also, the diversity of cuisine in Crete is unlike what you see around Greece. From what I know about Ikaria, the lifestyle, lack of stress, purpose still given to elders are also big contributors of it being a place to live a longer life.

yes I was reading also that Crete should be another blue zone because of the number of centurians there@@becoming_greek

@@SM-JIL its definitely what the locals here think :) I'm sure the people who have named the Blue Zones don't like to consider "more than one place" per country a Blue Zone... but the Cretans look at Ikaria and say that the same thing happens in Crete concerning longevity and that its not so unique from them
