I got a tear detected, fortunately on time and before it progressed into detachment, I got laser surgery to seal it off. I’m now recovering and was super scared because I had never seen floaters before. Now I know laser was the best choice to avoid further problems, a simple solution. I hope this will be the end of any retinal problems in my life. Thank you for the video, it’s a very calmed explanation.

Just had laser retinopexy in nyc and am scheduled for follow up visit just 4 days later... seems too soo given that it can take up to 2 weeks to see if procedure "took". Anywho, this is one of the most straightforward, helpful, REASSURING+STRESS REDUCING videos I have seen on the topic. Though I live in NYC, I have floaters much like the woman toward the end who opted for removal and am considering same. My doc, while in the process of doing the laser retinopexy said he SAW the floater about which I had been most complaining, but said nothing could be done... that it might or might not resolve on its own, or diminish, but likely that my brain would learn how to ignore it over time. I am VERY interested in learning more about risks/benefits of the floater removal that your institution seems to provide while most do NOT offer such options. Fantastic video! You must be a great dad as you explain things in such a straightforward manner and exude confidence and calming energy!!! Thanks for that!

I had flashes, I went to optometrist straight away where told me to go to hospital emergency, I had emergency surgery on my eye the same day. Outcome is I lost my sharp vision in center of my eye, but did not lose the retina thank God.
@kevinwelsh74905 жыл бұрын
that's shocking. I experienced my vision in that eye was progressively going black from one side like a curtain being drawn. I think mine was a progressive detachment unfolding over a day or two. swarms of tiny black dots too. I think if detachment makes it to the middle it is lost forever. I think if I had not had surgery right away I would have lost it. Maybe I was an extreme case - I don't know. I am pleased with my Canadian health care. I live in Vancouver nearby the biggest hospital in Canada west of Great Lakes. The emergency doctor diagnosed right away and I was exam same afternoon by resident to confirm diagnosis and set up surgery. I hate to think what happens to people who are far from hospital eye surgery clinics. I kept checking my peripheral vision which was diminishing. I think one may not notice it diminishing unless check it by moving a finger into field of vision from one side. It was 10 years ago, but I remember something about keeping my head and eyes looking down toward the floor and something about lying on one side or the other, to slow the progressing of the detachment. can't remember how that works something to do with what one perceives is the opposite (mirror) of what is received on the retina. From my experience, if my field of vision is darkening I wouldn't hesitate to get seen urgently by opthalmologist straight away.

The lady in the end of video described what I see when I'm driving or in bright sunlight. A cloud in front of my eye. I don't see dark spots but a hazy-gel like body impeding my vision. My ophthalmologist is not too keen on laser surgery and this is what is bothering me as opposed to what Dr. Ginsburg is saying. I have a dilemma now. I have had this problem for several months now and not getting better or used to it.

Go to another doctor, your vision is worth a second or even a third opinion. I think the understanding is many things may cause this issue, therefore, surgery may not be what's required but definitely, a proper diagnosis is.

I Just had laser retinopexy in nyc to repair two tears. will know shortly if it "took," but doc said it would NOT remove the floaters I experience much like yours and the woman in the video. Mostly I am concerned that the tears were "welded" but am now stressing about post procedure concerns of plain old vision and whether this splotchy floater, large-ish, dark grey and often visible front and center, will impede normal vision. Am very interested in learning about floater removal assuming step 1/tear repiair is successful. Have you had any improvement or considered the more specific floater removal this video mentions? Good luck to you!

Excellent video/info. I read the success rate of lasering a small retinal tear is about 90% if you catch it in time. However, i wonder if those people ever get normal vision back? When they say "success rate" does that mean those people get most or all of their normal vision back? Or is that blurriness they got from the tear permanent even after being treated with laser and tacked done?

My both eyes have been operated last month. My problem was little bit serious about retina detachment. My left eye's retina was detached and right eye had a tear and operated within 8 days.. They put oil like substance in my left eye by doing surgery. Right eye operated with laser surgery. My question is that how much time will it take to recover my retina and will it be strong enough after removing the oil...? My vision of both eyes is perfect now... I am from Pakistan
@Paige0986 жыл бұрын
I don't think you'll answer, but hopefully someone will with some knowledge towards my question. I don't know what's wrong with my eye, rather it's a retina tear or I'm losing my sight. For about a week straight now I've been getting this one black floater in my left eye, it comes around everyday, and I've never had it before. It's not a dot, and it's not big, it looks like a random shape. For a long time I've had a pain in the left bottom corner of my left eye And there's a little red circle there too. Sometimes my left eye gets blurry. Also, I've noticed that my left pupil is a little bigger than my right, I've tested it in the light and the dark, it stays a little bigger than the other. If this means anything, I did need glasses ever since I was in kindergarten. I was told that if I didn't wear them, I might go blind by the age of 20, I'm 19 now. I only wore glasses in 7th and a part of 8th grade. This probably doesn't add up to a retinal tear, but I'm sure it's something bad, there are just too many symptoms at once. Oh, and my left eye is much better than my right... Honestly, they're both bad though.

Dr. Ginsburg, I'm 33 and had a surge of eye floaters in both eyes over the last two weeks, with one in my right eye being so bad that I can't stop seeing it, even in dim rooms. I can live with the ones in my left eye as I'm able to look through them. I've heard that in people my age the floaters may be too close to the retina or too close to the lens to be laser treated. She has some complaint even after this surgery, she still, when she looks on side, she sees water floating. When we says surgeon on follow up visit, he said since the procedure is somewhat complicated, they have not removed the retinal fluid in the procedure. Moreover he said if the water doesn't dry then the possibility of second surgery remains. She already has had a surgery before in another eye due to the retinal detachment, same surgery in mid 2013. our concern is what would be advisable in this situation. She is 25 and is healthy otherwise.

Don’t worry sweetheart, I believe it may take some time to heal and to fully recover vision. Floaters especially do not go away so fast because the vitreous is still detaching but that’s a harmless process. If your tear was treated on time with laser then you are most likely safe.

I went to get my eyes tested and they said I need glasses and still haven't got them. Lately I feel im very nearsighted and have been for a while. I can't see the board at school. I'm getting really worried. I feel they're getting worse and worse and want to go to the doctors or something.

S R You should wear glasses. I needed glasses by kindergarten and was told that if I never wore them, I might lose my sight by the age of 20. I only wore them in kindergarten, 7th grade, and some of 8th grade. I'm 19 now, and I'm starting to get symptoms. I hope glasses are what can fix this.

I though a retina tear was automatic gas bubble?
@drozdforce8853 Жыл бұрын
no, tear is lasered, detachement is bubbled

Can devices like your iPad cause a recinal tear or detachment?

oh I seriously doubt that. being over 50 is enough to cause it.

No. The junk I see is ON THE OUTSIDE of my eye. No mention of micro critters that do not cause nasty unhealthy situations.

i was riding my bike when I noticed some blood discharge in my right eye. Maybe, it was due to air pressure in eye. After few days, i had a huge flash and alot of floaters. Do i need to worry about?
