Something that confuses me is that when I went to Vietnam a few years ago from Thailand (have Thai wife) we needed a "letter of invitation" to enter. It was said that we couldn't just go to Vietnam. We had to be invited to enter Vietnam. We went to the embassy in Bangkok and submitted our passports and picked up the next day. How does that square with boarder runs?

i agree, Vietnam is the greatest. If you are interested in having a Vietnamese girlfriend, the easiest and most reliable way is to have someone else introduce you to one or her friends. This can avoid avoid scams. Most Vietnamese women are very loving and very loyal. But a word of warning: never cross a Vietnamese woman or you will soon know why the Trung Sisters led their country against the Chinese invaders. There is a military base near by used to be US before 1975, then Soviet Union until 1990. That may be how Nha Trang is well-known to Russia tourists.

Before Covid a lot of restaurants accommodated Russian and Ukrainian tourists. The restaurants have the menu in Russian that the Ukrainian can read, so people thought that they were all Russian. After Covid and then the invasion of Russia to Ukraine, Russian tourists don't go to Nha Trang Vietnam anymore, they go to Thailand instead.

..Cam Ranh is about 30 kl south. The Russians were there briefly many years ago like 40yrs. There was a large Russian and Ukrainian community in Nth Nha Trang but it's smaller now. Yrs ago there was a great Russian restaurant called "Check Point" it was a great night out. They had many wonderful photos of the Soviet Navy often interacting with the US miltary and after a few vodkas they had many Soviet uniforms that you could put on and take photos, the jackets covered with medals and those caps they had. The girls just loved to dress up...fun. the Russians are cool people and guess what they are a lot like me and you.

I'm in Nha Trang right now for the first time in almost a decade. It has grown a lot since I first visited here over fifteen years ago. I usually go to Saigon each year but Nah Trang makes a nice change of pace. I'm in the tourist area where you shot the high rises near the beach. Too many tourist for my liking. Your apartment building isn't that far away and I might walk there to check out the area. I love Vietnamese food and have no craving for western cuisine. Definitely helps with the budget. I can get a 450mil bottle of Saigon white at one of the local restaurants for 12K dong. Insanely cheap! I think the Saigon night life has more to offer but it depends on indiividual prioritiies I guess.

Good to view your video to bring back the old memories, I spent 4 years in Nha Trang to study Marine Science (1974-1978) after my high school year in Da Lat. Then Phan Thiet as a member of technical staff in charge of fishery industry, left Viet Nam in 1979 to Singapore and in California in mid 1980. Graduated with a degree in computer and entered the high tech industries a few years later in Silicon Valley. Many years in the industry and travelling around the globe and forgetting about Viet Nam. I may visit Nha Trang, Da Lat, Sai Gon, ...my childhood memories in the future.

They are both beautiful beaches. Nha Trang weather is warmer than Da Nang. Nha Trang beach has yellow sand. Danang beach has white sand.

I was born in Nha Trang but I recommend Da Nang instead. Nha Trang is for tourist or short term stay, 1-2 weeks. Da Nang is for long term and more relax and the local people are very nice.

You have some pretty informative videos with real life stats. When we retire, for sure we will come stay in Vietnam, at the very least as long term tourists. My wifes Thai and we have a home in Chiangmai Thailand and maybe Vietnam will be a place we go when the Burning Season happens. I'm 61, and retiring now or in a few years, really won't make a difference other than we will not be living in southern california anymore, which we love so we will probably put it off as long as possible. WE are in a pretty good position reguardless because we own both our homes outright. Never thought I'd be in this position, but by sheer luck, here we are and all this info is very helpful. We plan to rent our home out for at least a year because while I've been to thailand over 30 times, it was always for vacation. I know there's a big difference between vacation and living. I've never been in thailand where $ was an issue. Our budget while renting is pretty high since our housing cost is about $800 usd for association fees in our village in Chiangmai. Houses in our area like ours Rent for around $4k per month. Our house was built in 1956 and the one across the street with the exact floor plan just sold for $1.2 million usd. Not braging at all, just showing what the reality of housing costs are in the USA, specifically southern california. Our house in Thailand is 7 years old and the house in the USA is 1600 sq ft, while the Chiangmai house is 2500 sq ft and the Chiangmai house is worth about $300k usd. A realitor recently told me I could rent it out for $1000usd. Politics aside, the only reason we will retire in asia is 100% cost. Best thing for us would be to keep the US house and just bounce around the world, but we just don't have that kind of savings. Its super safe in asia, but there are areas where the usa is much safer and thats the roads. I can and do ride my bicycle to the beach which is 8 miles away with zero danger. Once there, I can ride in a big bike path if I want to go fast on the street, or just cruise on the beach path 10 miles one way, and 6 miles the other. Very hard to find a place like that in any city in asia. Cost though...lol There are always plus and minus issues. I watch a lot of youtubes from expats and they never mention that. If it weren't for that we would already have peeled the bandaid and moved. Oh, another thing, Taking my wife to the snow this week. An hour and a half drive. We live in the only place you can enjoy weather in the 70s and then just drive to the snow in a couple hours. Rarely do it, but its an option. Thanks for the video

I appreciate your videos and the information you provide. Maybe think about checking with the locals to improve your pronunciation of the common native words you use frequently in your videos. The Vietnamese currency, 'dong', and the name of your current city, 'Nha Trang', are a couple examples from this video. Locals are generally very happy to help a foreigner genuinely interested in learning a little of their language.

Almost same video as Da Nang and Hoi An, so given costs are pretty much the same the question is whether Nha Trang is the best of the three? Subjective and frankly only way one could decide is visit all three and throw in Dalat as its close to Nha Trang. Great job!

I myself live in Thailand on 60,000 baht a month = 1,700 USD and now, after about 2 years and more than 20 house viewings, have found a beach apartment 42 sqm with kitchen balcony view pool/beach and from inside panoramic sea view/ the horizon / moved into the city Ban Chang Rayong Thailand in this apartment CLIFF WIEW 1 CONDONIUM 1 month ago ---7000 baht / month or 196 USD / month . Before this, I spent almost 2 years in Thailand between 15,000 - 20,000 baht / month in rent for my accommodation. I am a single man, 46 years old, and have previously not been able to afford major projects such as air travel to the islands / scuba diving, nor felt comfortable on the budget to acquire a full-time relationship with anything other than plants on the balcony. Costs for my beer budget in Thailand is quite expensive compared to neighboring countries/ but works out to about 10 USD / day for beer = 300 USD/month = calculated that I drink 6 packs of 0.5 liter cans/ day of the best beer SINGHA beer similar to KRUSOVIC or THE STAROPRAM/ Me Also rent motorbike HONDA PCX 150 CC 3000 bath / mount approx 110 USD / mounth The VISA cost is 1900 bath for every second mounth (50 USD) and must do every 60 day VISA RUN ---Maximun by LAW 2 times a year by land border CAMBODIA or MALAYSIA approx 3 000 bath with visa cost including transportation (85 USD) the other 4 times a year , need to take visa run by flight and its varoius the price BANGKOK - SIAM REAP or KUALA LUMPUR can be from 2 000 - 5 000 bath .( 55- 140 USD / 2 mounth ) . Living on a skimpy budget watching the pennies and cents is no way to live. It gets boring. No one has picked up on needing money for replacement clothing, shoes, household products, cosmetics. And of course if you have a girlfriend who is pretty, feminine and much younger they like new clothes and shoes, cosmetics, travelling ++. Then there are hobbies that cost money and we need money in our budget for flights back home to visit relatives and money to spend there. Also no matter how healthy and fit we are and I'm over 60, we sometimes catch a virus or need dental work. It all adds up. Having said that Dan's video's are informative, detailed and interesting.

Yes especially if you live in areas where other expats live. These areas in cities are going to be most convenient and familiar for foreigners too, food stores, more restaurant options, malls . Many of these areas are also good for Russian and Chinese (like Nha Trang) and Korean expats. Some expats feel that they must live as an "authentic" Vietnamese (as if no Vietnamese live in upscale areas!). Fine they can learn to manage by pointing and using google translate/google lens, eat only Vietnamese food, and deal with inconveniences at a lower standard of living.

Don’t worry, you can ask young people, they can speak English even maybe not good enough 😅 use google translate or body language… I don’t think it’s a barrier. You better book homestay first and then u can ask the owner about monthly rental if u want to stay longer. In Nha Trang, if u stay in the “western street”, there’re hundred kinds of accommodation around, it’s easy to find good one 😂 Welcome from VN 😊

The fact that one person can live on a certain amount does not mean that another person can live on that amount. The only way to know what your expenses would be is to go there and pick where you are going to live, eat, drink, and entertain yourself and add it all up. Yet, every time we visit Vietnam, we meet many older Western people who have been here for years. Many of you asked why I didn’t ask Mark what visa he has. I have never met anyone that is overstaying a visa in Vietnam and Mark is not overstaying. Everyone I meet has permission to be in Vietnam. If you are a rule follower, you should only follow the official rules to stay in a country. That is what I recommend (and that is what Mark has done). But if you ever fall in love with a country and want to stay ... ask a few expats off camera how they stay in a country without overstaying their visa. Many people all over the world find ways to stay in countries they love. But if it doesn’t sound perfectly legit to me, I never promote it on my channel ... for two reasons. One, I don’t want to disrupt the lives of older people who are happily living in a country somewhere by publicly sharing controversial solutions that could get shut down if they became widely known because of me. Two, I don’t want to publicly encourage a large number of people to use the same controversial solutions ... it might embarrass officials and place me on a shit list. Instead, do exploratory visits, ask ex-pats questions off-camera, decide where you want to live and pick the best way for you personally to make that happen. That said ... I will be sharing more details about the various ways people are staying in Vietnam long-term as I learn more off-camera from the expats I meet here. I live in Thailand and travel to Vietnam. To live comfortably, you really need to budget $2000-$2500/mo. The cost of food $20/day eating 2 times a day with snacks/drinks at home. Motorbike $3100 plus gas. VISA service fees $1000+/year. Unexpected medical - depends on your condition. Anything catastrophic can cost an arm and leg. Don't forget dental expense. If you retire and want to travel, the travel expenses can be high. I own a condo and there are monthly expenses for building maintenance and unit repairs. If you rent, the landlords will pass on these expenses over time. Living in Asia in really not that cheap.

I live in Vietnam. Apparently you are living at the high end of Dan's budget. You can rent a motorbike for $50 a month, Dan allocated $25-$50. Or buy a new Honda Blade for $900 up to your SH for $3100. Gas is cheap only driving around town. Your food $20/day is $600/month, Dan estimated $530 to $730 range.
