I lived in Jomtien, which is a few kilometers south of Pattaya for 3 years, about 18 years ago and I was living very well on $2000 a month. Back then I was paying $300 a month for a condo. Prices haven't changed that much. I still go to Thailand frequently for holidays The only reason I didn't stay was because Visas were a hassle and I wasn't old enough then to get a retirement visa. So I moved to Cambodia and I also visit for health care. Thailand has a better health care system than Canada or the US and better than most European countries. With excellent health insurance and a car $2000 a month is more realistic, but Dan's budget is about right the only thing I'd add is health insurance. Great video guys. Now I want to take a holiday to Thailand.

@gooblio ะ–ั‹ะป ะฑาฑั€ั‹ะฝ
@@LJ-jq8og I couldn't tell you now, but back then I wasn't old enough and at that time Cambodia had no age restriction on retirement visa. They do now I think you have to be 50 in Thailand and 55 in Cambodia, plus proof of income, or so much money in the bank. I'm not sure of all the restrictions exactly. I'd check with immigration. There are immigration lawyers that can help too, but for a retirement visa you could do it all yourself. And for work permits most employers will help with getting you a visa. Facebook has some groups that have good information on visas too.

I live in Jomtien, only a 10Baht bus ride from central Pattaya, been here nearly 3 years, me and my Thai girlfriend only go to central Pattaya for shopping and restaurants mainly. Jomtien has everything you could want or need and itโ€™s a much more relaxed area to live long term. The rents are cheaper and thereโ€™s a huge market called Ratanakorn, its about the size of 2 or 3 football pitches and has the best and freshest meat, fruit and vegetables that you will find and the cheapest imo. Also the beaches are much nicer, like Dongtan Beach, Cosy Beach and Paradise Beach which is in the Pratamnak area, also a very liveable area thatโ€™s getting more popular ๐Ÿ˜Š

Many expats do the Bangkok - Pattaya circle. They love the hustle and bustle of Bangkok and get tired of it and go to Pattaya because it is cheaper and easier to move around. Pattaya has widened the beach and improved the boardwalk over the last couple of years. My wife loves the seafood down there. We rent a couple of chairs under the umbrellas and she can order all she wants. The city has a lot of weekend festivals. They are working hard to bring tourists back. The other quieter living option is Jomtien just over the hill to the south. Still, the better restaurants are in Pattaya.

Good thing About Pattaya is itโ€™s only what 2 hours to Bangkok so easy if you need to get home quickly. Itโ€™s harder to stay there longtime unlike Philippines. I think your estimate for electric is probably worst case. I am in Pattaya now and last month I paid 1000b for electric + water. So around $27. My place is 40m squared and doesn't get direct sun, so I can keep the aircon very low during the day. At night I sleep under the cover sheet, on top of the blanket, so I can keep the aircon quite low at night without being uncomfortable. Some places charge more for electric so that is something to watch out for. I pay 7 baht per unit. Some places can charge close to twice that. Yes, thailand requires. For those looking to in thailand a certain amount of money. You can put into a bank account around $24,000US or show income coming in a thai bank account around $2,400.00 per month. Most americans pick mexico over any other place in the world, because it's close to america and traveling back and forth to america to easy and cheap. Medicare and keeping it while living in mexico is also a good reason for those americans. While living in thailand. Most of those foreigners. Wouldn't carry carry any health care policy,because it was it expensive and had loopholes like not covering pre-existing conditions and more expensive as you get older under it.

@bananapatch9118 Chiang Mai is my second home right now. If you're new to Thailand and don't need to stay close to the beach, Chiang Mai is still the best for new expats. You will find a lot of things to do, city life, restaurants, cafรฉs, shopping and just outside the city you can go hiking in the mountains. The city has been very popular for digital nomads now because of its laid-back atmosphere and many of cafรฉs you can do your work from. Also, the government is planning to work on the high-speed rail to Chiang Mai. Hopefully, in a few years, they can start the project. Good investment if you want to buy a property. Pai, it's a touristy town. The transportation may not be easy to get in and out right now. But it's really beautiful. The weather is cooler, too. Chiang Rai's weather is so amazing, that's why I consider moving there. The city is growing as well. I need some fresh air and access to the mountains and space for my veggie garden. Chiang Mai has become too popular right now, so Chiang Rai is more peaceful for me. Plus, I want to start some businesses there.

Pattaya looks great after years of sad covid lockdown videos, so much unemployment. I think for a man contemplating retiring overseas, Pattaya area may offer the most gentle culture shock. Already catering to foreigners, the malls, availability of foreign food, western style condos, near-western standard of living, good-enough English, and lots of other dudes for friendship. There are guys who will like the famous bar scene, fine. From the comments, you see there are also many living happily outside the bar scene, but that is not so interesting to get reported on. ps. Great question @andrewmoss1753, I have one report where I explain what I do about health care and another where I show you how I search for health insurance. What I do about health care: vagabondbuddha.com/two-biggest-risks-of-retiring-early-overseas/ Report where I search for health insurance: vagabondbuddha.com/best-health-insurance-for-ex-pats-in-philippines/ By the way, once you search for health care you will start seeing more offers for health insurance and travelers insurance when you are online. Health insurance is one of the most dynamic or changing industries in the travel world because so many people around the world are deciding to live or retire outside their home country. So do a search every year before you renew to make sure you have the best available for your personal circumstances because new ones come out every few months. Thanks for asking so I could answer this for many people! Dan

Sorry to say you're not living your existing and doing everything on a shoestring. Tip. You Never shop in Villa market as it's the most expensive shopping mail in Thailand. Then you don't have Visa costs. If your over 50 you can get a 1-year retirement visa, but you would require 800K BHT in a Thai bank "Each" to get that. There are other ways, but they are a bit pricy and sort of illegal, but still available. Less if your married to a Thai. Yes, you can get Thai beer in a 7/11 cheap but if you venture into a bar that's when the prices at least double. Also, you can get fined for drinking beer on the beach. You may get away with doing the latter but stand by for a fine if a cop sees you and decides to get nasty. Cos you will pay and big time. I have just given you a few downsides there are plenty more. So, anyone looking at this Vlog take note it'll cost you loads more living in Pattaya. Then again what do I know I have only lived in Thailand for well over 27 years. 7 of those in Pattaya. The latter was around 19 years ago, and I was paying out more than you said then. Can it be done (Living on the cheap???) well yes but you would have to get out of any tourist places. My average living costs are around 10UK a year $11k. But I don't drink, or pay rent, Also, my Thai wife is a real Cheap Charlie and hates to spend monies. Never wants to go on holidays. Makes her own clothes. I consider myself very lucky.

It looks like you left out insurance? It's compulsory on all kinds of visas I think. Even though there might be a cheap minimal one, I think Turkey accepts a $10 monthly insurance or something. In general, westerners have more dollars than sense, which raises prices for locals and westerners alike. My general principle is, if your pension in USA is $800 or in Bulgaria it is $200, you can always have at least the same lifestyle in many other countries around the world, Thailand and Malaysia and Vietnam included. There are reasons why you will not be able to live on the $100 many locals do, but with the required effort you should be able to cap your "foreigner fee" to 2x.

I see you eating all this western/supermarket food and while they have that in Pattaya, in a lot of other places not so much, and my problem was finding a sufficint quantity/caloric food to eat while in Thailand. Shopping in the modern supermarket can break a budget, the local markets are primarily vegetables, and I'm still not sure who besides adventurous tourists eat the fly-covered satay form the bicycle sidecar BBQ vendors or the centipede-on-a-stick. And the fish is whole fish, you gotta get used to that if you are living like a native.

Interesting little microfax you gave.. I'm from Oregon so Tillamook cheese how interesting, and your Airbnb exact blueprint of the condo I had in Bangkok I'm guessing most people will not know how to live on $800 a month, but I'm sure it can be done and probably with style if you make the Right Moves. That would not include daily alcohol, or limit, for that price. Guessing unless you are single party animal, there are a lot of better places to go than Pattaya.๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™

Along with the high concentration of expats in Pattaya comes a lot of visa agents to help with maintaining your immigration status. I don't use an agent but from what I hear you would have to add about 15,000-20,000 baht each year for this service. A little more to get started.

Yeah but AirBnB and Agoda still have heaps of Residences, Serviced Apartments, Condos. Less than 30 days, the owner is supposed to have a hotel license, but like a lot of Thai tourist and covid laws, doesn't seem to be enforced. The government is partnering with Airbnb on projects to bring in more workers and wealthy people, they need AirBnB to be happy.

I love your work, but... Visa applicants might want to avoid accidentally breaking a law. The Thai government used to treat visa overstays like jay walking, but then later banned violaters for life. Retiring Cheaply in Thailand has less to do with the cheap living that your travels has shown than it does with obtaining the privlage of staying here.
