Saturn version actually had music tracks that played for the wrong stages, just like MK 1 on the Sega CD, a major goof up. For Genesis owners, MK 3 was a breath of fresh air, because it was the best port of an MK game they ever had, likely due to no involvement from Probe Software. Instead the game game was handled by Sculptured Software, whom had done all the SNES MK games, including this and UMK 3.
@stonerdemon5 жыл бұрын
Beyond its quality or value as a fighting game, Mortal Kombat was very, very important from a technical point of view. The development team were the precursors of the green screen digitizing technology, an improvement over the blue screen method. Acclaim, as the publisher, saw the gold mine and invested a lot, publishing even more digitized games like Batman Forever (which was crap). Other games like Stargate and Judge Dredd used the technology. At the time, it seemed as if Acclaim could turn anything into gold (at least before Batman Forever, the game and the terrible movie). Capcom also stepped in with SF The Movie and studios like 3DO followed suit with even more digitized games (and a little studio called Naughty Dog started with a digitized fighting game). 32-bit polygons destroyed the dream and the technology itself towards the new millennium, but the original 3 Mortal Kombats remain as a very important piece of history in game development.

I actually have the DOS port of MK3 , and its the version I played at the time (other than a few trips to the arcade), It was a very good version actually, I remember people preferring it to the Windows port as it had a few extras the Windows version didn't. The main issue with it was that it was CPU sensitive, If you played it on anything faster than a 486 or a sub 100Mhz Pentium , the game ran too fast (it would give you 2 seconds to select a character for instance). Gotta hand it to the Mega Drive version though , getting decent visuals out of a nearly 7 year old system would have been a challenge. That the devs realised the limitations and focused on getting a game that plays correctly is commendable.

lightdark28 I remember the DOS port. As a kid I had it, then remember my game CD having an issue. I got another copy which not only had the original DOS port but also included the Windows 95 port. I remember the Windows version reminded me more of the PSX.
@lightdark286 жыл бұрын
as far as I know, the Windows version was based on the PS port , while the DOS version was basically its own port , so to speak. the DOS version has things like character shadows which were missing from the Windows port if I remember correctly. There was also the story artwork from the arcade which the DOS version had , I didn't see it on any other port (could be wrong on that one though). Nothing crazy, but its little things that bring it a bit closer to the arcade the one thing holding the DOS version back was the controls of course, I know you could use a Gamepad, but even the "best" gamepads at the time from Gravis were basically worse knockoffs of the SNES pad, and in many cases lacked buttons.

Neo Geo was also niche in Russia. Amusement parks in Russia generally featured Namco, Sega, rarely Taito and Dance Dance Revolution arcade cabinets imported from Japan, whack-a-mole, candy dispensers, claw machines, water gun shooters, feed-a-rabbit and ticket booms. Arcades in Russia are considered entertainment for children. Japanese fighting games are obscure in Russia, mainly due to complicated gameplay mechanics and cartoony style, which my compatriots consider "childish".

Anyway back to the port: You see, maybe you have saw it but the port is actually based on the MK3 PS1 port, which is a bad thing since they forgot to change actual UMK3 updates, some "extra" characters do not appaer at all, the music is messed up with totally incorrect order for each stage, among other things. So it's a good port but not a totally good port, is an ok port I suppose. Anyway, thank you for sacrificing yourself playing a game I can totally understand why you don't like to show this video, regards Mark!
@M4R14NO946 жыл бұрын
Great ep as usual! Regarding your choice to cover the Saturn port of Ultimate, there was one more port of it that could've been included: Ultimate Mortal Kombat for the DS. It's a really good port of the arcade (albeit with slightly chunky graphics due to the DS' lower resolution), and a massive improvement over the travesty that was MK Advance. It's not emulation-based like the long-delisted XBLA port from around that time, so there's that. As for your mention of the DOS port, amusingly it's that version that's currently available on digital storefronts; a few years ago Warner Bros. (the current rights owners) re-released the DOS ports of the first three games as a bundle on GOG.com. Windows version is nowhere to be seen.
@RetroCore6 жыл бұрын
Oh, I wasn't aware of a DS version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat. Wish I had know that. It's really stupid re-releasing the DOS version for PCs over the Windows port. Maybe there was some licensing issue with the Windows version?
@M4R14NO946 жыл бұрын
I doubt it was licensing issues, since the DOS ports of 1 and 2 were by Acclaim rather than Williams/Midway themselves. I'm guessing they didn't wanna bother testing if it worked on modern systems so they just nabbed the DOS version, slapped a DOSbox wrapper on it and called it a day.

I love Mortal Kombat 2 for its atmosphere, tone, music, and introducing a lot of the classic characters like Baraka, Kitana, and so on. Mortal Kombat 3 (or Barebones MK3 as I call it, however, I can never really get into. Without Scorpion, Johnny Cage, and other classic characters, the roster just feels incomplete. A good number of the characters introduced in MK3 I think only really got interesting in the Netherrealm Era games, like Nightwolf and Sheeva. It feels goofier compared to the otherworldly, mysterious vibe of MK2 and the fatalities are hit-or-miss. Ultimate MK3 does fare better with several of the classic characters coming back and the new stages, but I could never choose it over MK2.

i think the genesis versions of MK all deserve extra credit for having such a damn cool style! darker and more scary than the arcade versions, in my opinio,n.

In general terms, versus fighting games looks and sounds better on SNES, but plays better on Megadrive. The 8 bit versions of all the Mortal Kombat are unplayable. Good vídeo!
@topofbones6 жыл бұрын
ben owen Yes, Street Fighter 2 SCE is the best port, most closely to the arcade one than the SNES one. That's a pity Super Street Fighter 2 on megadrive can't say the same :(
@yohkom.79886 жыл бұрын
Eh? Super Street Fighter 2 is also better on Mega Drive! The gameplay is superior, once again, and it also has more voices, better animation (more frames), more game modes... just the backgrounds and some music are better on SNES. Then Fatal Fury 2 looks about as good on both systems but sounds and plays better on Mega Drive. Samurai Shodown looks much better on Mega Drive but apparently plays better on SNES Mortal Kombat 1 is garbagae on SNES, 2 looks and sounds better on SNES but plays better on Mega Drive and 3 looks about as good on both but plays better on Mega Drive.
@yohkom.79886 жыл бұрын
For me games usually look better on Mega Drive (better resolution plus better animation > more colors), then about sound it really depends of the game but gameplay is almost always better on Mega Drive, partly thanks to the wider resolution (most Mega Drive games run in 320x224 pixels while 99,99% of the SNES library is stuck in 256x224 pixels) which means wider field of view (especially noticeable with games such as Earthworm Jim, Desert Strike, FIFA, The Lost Vikings...) and also thanks to the superior CPU which make the games smoother and more responsive. Sooo many SNES games with bad cases of slowdowns, frame rate issues and even input delay, Mortal Kombat being the worst example about this!
@yohkom.79886 жыл бұрын
I checked a few more: Fatal Fury is bad on both Mega Drive and SNES but less bad on Mega Drive cuz at least it keeps the dual playfield feature which was Fatal Fury's main distinction. World Heroes looks better on Mega Drive but plays better on SNES. Pit-Fighter is better on Mega Drive in basically every ways. TMNT Tournament Fighters looks and sounds better on Mega Drive but plays better on SNES. And Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 seems better on Mega Drive with more content and better gameplay, SNES version apparently is a mess. 16 and 32-bit generations are so fun and interesting to dig! Such variety and differences between the games... the current generation is boring in comparison.
@sloppynyuszi5 жыл бұрын
Yohko M. In what way was TMNT on Mega Drive better looking than the SNES version? They were two completely different games, but the SNES version was this super colorful impressive game looking like something straight from the arcade, while the mega Drive was this grainy sad looking thing that started life on an Amiga 500. I’m a Sega fanboy, but there are some games we had to be jealous of the SNES owners and tmnt tournament fighters was one of them. Our Aladdin was better, and I like classic Sonic more than classic Mario.

MK3 was and still is very popular here where I live, so much that eveybody who had a Mega Drive/SNES or even the Master System owned a copy of original or Ultimate version. Not the best game in the world, but somewhat fun for killing time if you don't have a better stuff to play.

The SNES port is INCREDIBLY buggy. Heck, the exclusive tournament mode it has is broken and incomplete. Sheeva(?) is glitched and crashes the game under numerous occasions. The colors are BARELY better than the Mega Drive's as well. I just think the SNES port was rushed, with the music being the high point.

retrovideogamejunkie. Strikers is actually "usefull" on the right time (this idea was actually taken from the Marvel vs Capcom series...Or maybe i'm wrong). Buuut the Run button is sometimes required for some finishing moves and some moves. Midway actually thought that block and Run automatically is not intuitive than doing manually...Meh

Was happy to see the new episode in my subs box until I clicked on it. Man, just straight shit on the game and it's one of the best. I personally think UMK3 is the best out of the 2D versions of MK. Also, I don't know about over there, but UMK3 is still being played here regularly at tournaments today, not MK1 or MK2. I would say the weakest thing about this game is the AI. It is easily exploitable(even without using run, knowing moves, or combos). If you just play defensively and bait attacks, the AI is easily beaten even on the hardest settings. You should really give UMK3 another shot. Learn a few moves and go into it with an open mind instead of a predetermined conclusion, you just may find yourself liking it. Like any fighter though, it will be most enjoyed when playing/learning it with others and not just the AI.
@RetroCore6 жыл бұрын
Ultimate MK3 I don't mind as much but MK3 is awful IMO. To be honest though, no MK game has been big in Japan due to Capcom and SNK ruling the beat'em up market.
@typhoonth86896 жыл бұрын
In CIS countries situation of beat'em ups games in general is polar opposite to Japan. Mortal Kombat is synonymous with the genre due to countless amounts of merchandise, first MK movie, main tune from aforementioned movie and UMK3 port for unlicensed Sega Mega Drive clones. Arcades in CIS countries were almost nonexistent, and Street Fighter II sold poorly on bootleg Mega Drive, either because pirates were not interested in this game or Russian gamers didn't like animesque graphics (even if they liked Earthworm Jim). Even today classic Mortal Kombat games are more popular in Russia even on SNES emulators.

Yep when u up the difficulty to the arcade version they won't let that fly. Especially on ultimate mk3. But genesis and super Nintendo, even ps1, if u time the net right, like when they get close to you, it works everytime. Arcade is where it's at. I have the ps1 and genesis version and have to pick other characters since cyrax is too easy. Wish my friends knew how to play better lol

It's mildly irritating to see this series continue into the present day when far better arcade games never even got a single sequel. Those fatalities kept the cash rolling in, the audience didn't really care about the game play or animation so much, it was all about the blood.
@loganjorgensen6 жыл бұрын
I'm irritated you think all us MK fans stayed for the blood alone, I enjoyed the gameplay and world, fatalities were brief events end capping the matches that might happen if you knew how as the AI opponent was stingy with them. Things really got gimmicky at #3 for sure as MK4 was 3D for no reason, PS2 era continued with weapons and style switching. :P Only the recent games have captured some of that magic that had me like MK in the first place.
