I don't agree, I think there is a night and day difference between the Mega Drive and 32x version. The sounds being the biggest one. Very clear announcer line (muffled in the snes). Just listen to scorpion scream when knocked into the spikes, or the BOOM of Raiden's victory pose. The full grunts from being uppercutted. Gotta give the 32x more credit. I found it to be the best home port on the cartridge systems.
@bifftannen1598
@bifftannen1598 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. I don't know why some people can't see that the 32x version is a way more complete game than the MD. Just with the addition of the 30-40 more sound effects directly from the arcade gave the game a lot more exciting atmosphere. The only reason the voices were muffled (only a bit) in the SNES version was because they had to compress them to get them in the game as they used a 24 meg cart compared to the 32x version, which used 32 megs. The SNES still has Sub-Zero's correct arcade ice sounds & Probe did not correct it for the 32x version. There were several other sound effects the SNES had that the 32x didn't, which makes no sense. I like both SNES & 32x versions about the same. They each have things that are a bit better than the other, which kind of balances it out.

The MD version was my first MK game. I guess I got lucky I got my start with this one, when Midway started filling the game with easter eggs, and self aware jokes like ending the matches on Friendship and the “Toasty!” guy, creating a way more entertaining and satisfying game experience than the first part, which took itself too seriously.

About the Amiga version: The original game had just 3 disks. The one that floats the internet is the cracked version that had an extra disk. Because of this files were spread among the disks in a different way than the developers wanted... I bet you played the 4 disks version, which does a LOT more of disk swaps than the original one (Some fatalites, like the Jax one, asks to change disks JUST FOR THE FATALITY ANIMATION! ) - but this happens only on the cracked version. I find weird you praise MK1 controls on Amiga but then complain about them on MK2 since the controls are very similar on both games (ported by the same guys anyway, the same guys who made the Mega-Drive versions). I actually played the hell out of this with friends back at the time, since for me it was cheaper to own the Amiga version than the Mega-Drive one. :)

His ideas and opinions on the Amiga version are moot and not worth listening to anyway. He completely omitted the fact that it plays better, smoother, has less loading, is hdd installable, etc., etc. when running on hardware other than a crappy bog standard 1MB a500 with 1 floppy drive anyway. @@teddym2808 32x + Genesis should've had more power than the Midway T Unit (Arcade powering MK2, Last iterations/revisions of MK, NBA JAM, and a couple more) The main CPU was running at 6.25 MHz compared to the 32x's 2x SH-2 @ 23MHz. The RAM on the T-Unit is still unknown to me, but the 32X had 256K Main RAM + 256K VRAM, + the Genesis 72K Of main, and 64K of Video ram. This is actually even more powerful than the CPS-1 hardware. They could literally use one of the 32x CPU's to process sound, which I believe some developers did. In fact, People could have perfect CPS-1 games, which I believe MK2 should be perfect. 32x uses a 15 bit color palette (32k colors) with all 32K colors simultaneous on screen at once (in best conditions) CPS-1 could do 4K at best, and SNES could do 256 at once at best (probably static image with no motion when I mention at best). Most arcade units could only do 4K colors at once during that period (probably static images, just like 32x's 32k colors at once) MK2 was just an excuse. At least they got the sound samples decent for voices.

It included the crouch punch, crossover jump kick, pushback, time usage on moves (moves can only be used a certain amount of times before it's disabled to prevent infinities), better hit detection, slightly faster speed, a much improved blocking system and more refined controls. The graphics, sound, and music are better and it looks and sounds more sinister. It's just an all around better game. Also, none of the new MK characters played like anyone else. Your video of the 32X version, that has to be emulation. The speed is way slower in your video then on normal hardware. The 32X version plays much faster, allowing for combos that could not even be done on the Snes version. The audio on the 32X version's voices is also fairly clear. It is widely regarded as the best port of the game. The Saturn version has issues like loading animation during a match when you do a special move, causing a slight pause in gameplay sometimes. I cant recall if that affects the PS1 version, but it was an issue on the Saturn for sure. There was also a bug that could cause the character sprites to look all pixelated and low res. I forget what triggers it. it's been about 9 years since I last had the game on Saturn.

For Mortal Kombat, the UI and Characyers were controlled by the 32X and the backgrounds were pushed by the Mega Drive. And that’s why they were grainy even compared to the SNES version.

I disagree for Amiga comments. The gameplay was very nice, very responsive, and I've never had trouble executing specials, fatalities or anything else. I also played many other ports of MK2. As for swapping 4 disks, that's just one of the option. You could play on hard drive, and in the time when this game is released many Amiga's had HD. On PC, you can ONLY play it on HD drive, on the Amiga you can play it in 2 ways. You do the math. :) Besides that, good video.

SNES has the best and mostly complete port with good SFX and the correct music. When you play the 32X port after the SNES, it's like a step backwards. The only real slowdown in MK2 on SNES sometimes appears when you fight against Kintaro. Is your comparison running at 50hz?

The Mega Drive version suffered badly with cuts. Some are understandable, but others have me questioning Probe's priorities. They had enough space for an in-joke (the Fergality) and an alternate "Toasty" guy, but not for two extra frames to complete Johnny Cage's win pose? The SNES version is the better of the two 16-bit console ports, but something always felt "off" about it to me. It doesn't help that despite what some people claim, the sprites took a significant hit in detail and appear lower resolution than the Sega ones. I'd take the 32X version over it any day of the week. Personally I think the Saturn and Playstation versions are on a par. The loading icon highlights the loading on the Playstation, but both versions suffer from it. The Saturn version is missing more speech samples, including some, like Scorpion's "Come Here", clumsily removed. The Playstation version is missing the end of round musical stings, despite them being on the sound test. Both versions appear to largely share the same codebase as they have a lot of the same flaws, and outside of the limits of the hardware both just feel like they lacked care and attention to detail.

Is better than the PlayStation port, but not too much, only has a better controller, quicker loading times, slightly better music and slightly higher resolution, but still is very flawed and unpolished like the PlayStation port. If you used a Mega Drive-pad, had a second disc drive and 2 Megs of RAM playing MKII on the Amiga wasn't nearly as bad as claimed in the Video. Disc swapping was essentially reduced by a second drive and enough RAM. It's a shame, they never finished the announced AGA/CD32-port though. As the arcade and the Amiga run on the same architecture, it could have been great.

I remember the first time I laid eyes on the arcade version at a local comic book shop back in the day. I instantly became obsessed, even more than part one. I almost slipped into a coma when they announced the home console versions. My SNES was ready to go, and my big bro came home with a brand spanking new copy of the SNES version. I played this game incessantly, absolutely loved it. Anyway, In my opinion as far as the 16 bit home console versions go, the best was the SNES version hands down. And I don't know what the narrator meant as far a slow down in the gameplay. The narrator in this video sounds bias and way too critical, the SNES version is superior in sound as well as in graphics all the way. Back then my cousin had the Sega Genesis version and it just didn't cut it for me, I thought the sound quality was poor and the graphics were lacking detail and color. It just sucked and it killed the arcade feel overall. My cousin and I argue all the time as far as which version was better lol. Don't get me wrong, in general the Sega Genesis was an excellent console with countless amazing and memorable games, but when it comes to MK games they all sucked for the Sega Genesis. As far as the 32 bit home consoles go, the best version for me was the Sega Saturn version. It lacked a tad bit on the sound but I think overall the graphics and color were right under the arcade version. Later on I purchased the Midway Arcade Treasures for the PS2, and the MK2 version on that was by far the superior Arcade port version hands down. It was just like popping in that quarter in the arcade and playing the exact version from sound to graphics and gameplay.

Back in the day I also though the SNES version was the best but playing it now it's obvious that it's heavy censored, missing an awful lot of animation, has muffled audio and is slow. I'm not being an ass towards Nintendo here. Many who know my channel and me will fully vouch that I'm a massive Super Famicom / SNES fan. You only need to check my games room video to see that. I've got many of the big expensive titles as well as many other great games for the system. Please take a look at the ports again with an open mind and you will see the floors with the SNES port. On the upper hand, it does food the arcades level design closer than the Mega Drive version.

Retro Core Greetings, I have definitely looked at each port with an open mind and I will add that I owned quite a few of the actual ports presented in your great video. That's why I came to my conclusion, it's based on personal experience. I guess it all depends on whom you ask, but in any case I will say that you have some great vida for battle of the ports, most of the games you review are all time favorites of mine personally. With that being said I might even subscribe to your channel. But to be fair I think all versions apart from the actual arcade version have their flaws without a doubt , but I guess my copy of the SNES version way back when was a pretty good one lol! Kudos anyway my friend, I'll keep watching for sure.

Saturn version could have been the best port but the loading times and bugs prevent that. I find the SNES version was the best way to play the game back then without breaking the bank (same with SFII), but today settling for anything less than the Arcade version may not make much sense. My first version was the GB one and I liked it, despite the lack of colours, gore, characters, stages and simplified control.

Man, just block when you're getting hit by flurry punches!! Thanks for putting this together! I love the Saturn more than any system, but the Saturn port is garbage. The sounds are not correct in many places, and the gameplay is choppy and off. I actually prefer the 32X version out of all these, despite the nature of the lazy port. The DOS version is great, but you really needed the perfect PC config for it to run well, which was really difficult at the time. I wouldn't accuse the SNES ver of having "bad" slowdown, but the gameplay speed is a bit slower. If that's all you played on you wouldn't notice. It's a really great port.
