About Astroganger:
An alien woman named Maya crash-lands on Earth. Her homeworld was destroyed by the Blasters, a cruel alien race who steals the natural resources from other planets. She falls in love with a scientist and gives birth to a human boy named Kentaro. When the Blasters invade the Earth, Kentaro must defeat them by fighting with Astroganger, a robot made from living metal.

For those how don't know, this anime is considered to be the first super robot tv anime in colors but mazinger z premiere few months after it and got super popular thus mistaking mazinger for being the first robot anime in color

I think this is most in line with Tetsujin 28, which is nota quite a super Robot, is more like a Giant Robot genre, no cockpit , controls etc. probably the reason why Mazinger is considered the first super Robot and this is giant Robot like Tetsujin 28 and Ambassador Magma.

Reminds me my summer vacations in Syria back in the 80s, when the TV channel was only opening for few hours, when bringing a VCR into the country was smuggling (I mean you could have to pay hefty custom tax if they stopped you) and when you have some bootleggers as VHS rental. I think it was imported from KSA, it was in Arabic but I was not giving a F about, as long it was cartoons.

I don't think it can be concidered a mecha anime, because this robot is a living machine, capable of thinking, while Kantaro is not really his pilot, but more of power source
